Returning Player, Class choice
Rev should fit you well. Good at roaming and large scale battles. Warriors are still good aswell. Mesmers are not that usefull when it comes to large scale WvW, but really good for roaming and smaller fights.

Chronomancer is ok. At least you get bags if you drop double wells and feedbacks.
Seafarer’s Rest EotM grinch
I enjoy playing WvW but previously I have really only played engineer. I have dabbled a bit with all the classes, and curious how each Fairs in WvW/battles… If theyre useful, take some skill, have varied builds..etc
Engineer -> Are they as useless as they once were? Did scrapper help em a bit?
Warrior -> I havent seen more than a handful in about 2 weeks..
Revenant -> Where do they fit in?
Mesmers -> I’m sure theyre still useful for Veil, and somewhat portal. DId the wells help them secure more bags/tag more enemies? :p
Not really interested in the other classes much
Thanks for any info :-)
Hi I happen to play all classes and all playstyles in WVW on them, so I can give you some of my feedback.
-Engi – Scrapper spec changed it a TON. The kitless gyro / elixir bunker build scrapper is badder and beefier then what warriors back in GWEN meta used to be for frontline. It does however take a while to get the hang of, you need to understand and learn to execute all your invulns, blocks, reflects, absorbs, reductions etc. If you try to hybridize it with other stuff like ranged, kits, too much zerk (too offensive) etc. it just ends up sucking all around at everything. If you play it right, its pure awesomeness. Its also flexible, you can go from full scale large battles to roaming with just a switch of 1-2 utilities + 2-3 pieces of gear on it. You will know when you got the hang of your scrapper build once you start eating condi and corruption reapers for breakfast, literally not losing more then around 25% of your health per kill and laugh at all the people that complain about condi.
-Warrior- kinda sucks now except for gunflame and banner. You can do well for roaming on high mobility gunflame build and banners are still effective during large scale but require better timing and execution, but its kinda boring. Its frontline functionality got replaced by the scrapper, guard, DH and revenant.
-Rev- Its ok, but its VERY VERY VERY boring. Ultimately, it ends up being just boon spam and hammer bomb. Yea, you can do other stuff withj it, but all the otehr classes do that other stuff much better, and boonspam + hammer are your bread and butter. Also does great with small team havoc or team roaming (3-10 people groups), but kinda sucks solo. I recommend running around a bit on the rev, its interesting while its new and you explore its abilities and builds, just kinda sucks once you’ve settled down on it.
-Mes- Still getting pigeonholed into portal+veil. Wells are too slow and too long CDs and do not make a big difference for bag collecting and are not as valuable as veil + portal. Boonshare, and especially Inspiration Boonshare chronos are awesome in groups, but not for their wells, and you will still get thrown on veil and portal unless there are other players, other mesmers willing to do that instead of you which jsut doesn’t happen. As soon as the words “portal or veil” come out of any commanders mouth, unless its a super hardcore organized team, all the mesmers switch to their other toons and I can’t blame them being on the receiving end of it myself, and that’s the reality of it. On roaming and havoc it becomes much more effective, old fashioned variations such as condi / PU chrono or Inspiration / Chaos chrono are awesome to play and introduce new game mechanics which were not there before, switch to other classes for larger group play or you’ll regret it.
Since you’re suggesting rev, i believe you have HoT. I’ll write a brief introduction of the classes
Scrapper – Has Everything, but is not that great at anything
————-
Scrapper is melee backline killer with lot of stealth/invuln/blocks. Has access to Rampage/tornado, AoE moa, Waterfields, lot of condiclenase and reflects. In normal melee train, scrappers are quite useless compared to warriors/reapers in spike damage. But scrapper has lot of access to enemy backline thro stealth/leaps and can easily solo bunch of enemies and hold a smaller group off from a flank, as a scrapper you want to avoid enemy guardians as much as possible. Isn’t good at tagging loot.
Example build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQFASnUUB1XhtbBGpCkfhlJjKc7SmwS8ZKgAg+vr79G-TVCFQBLRpg+U/hd7PAgHAASUydFlgNRZg60BQwLAApACcMA-w
Run more knight trinkets if enemy is very melee heavy, Toolkit instead of elixir gun if ranged heavy.
Revenant – Unkillable boon monster
Revenant has taken a spot as unreplaceable part of melee next to guardian.
Melee Hammer rev is more popular and provides resistance + 50% damage reduction to allies with lots of constant burst damage.
Ranged rev can 1 shot enemy eles/necros and keeps might/fury up for nearby ranged, thus is spike class like necro without corrupts, but more mobile.
Revenant is well balanced and there arent many issues with it, mostly you will have issues with energy management and you will have to choose which skills to use and which not.
Builds:

Ranged:

mesmer – little out of meta
Unfortunately mesmer has no spot as caster/backlinekiller anymore because revs/eles/scrappers fill that spot too well, thus mesmers are mostly veil/portal bots that run tank builds and share boons to allies keeping them alive, very boring to play but very effective in organised play, I dont recommend if you want to have fun.
Boonshare build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vhAQNAseWncfClphFoBGrBUrhlejyMAugM6cDKhWruUb1ZF-TFyHABfpPAgnAQ47P8jyvmUCm/JAYP1fG4QAQKgMHDA-w
Dont forget the builds are just examples but work quite well, Lot of people recommend Commander armor for mesmer instead of Soldiers because the tradeoff from vitality to extra boon duration and damage.
Berserker – Spike/CC monster
Warrior has become with HoT one of the most unkillable specs with the Adrenaline health. Fills the role of in and out backline killer but lacks lot of support outside warbanner. Best build is with Greatsword/hammer CC Spike bot, you will see lot of 6+k crits against enemy. Guardians will kill nothing without warriors and it is quite fun to play as you get to make your own decisions (dont forget warriors have more freedom around the tag than guardians in wvw gameplay because theyre not boon/healbots). Doesnt require a good party to carry fights. Swap fury sig to berserker stance and take cleansing ire if you dont have enough cleanse/resistance in party.
Example build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vJIQJARSnMdA9dglkCmhA0hgltA79y2ZPtI/tAQoTJGU6aBA-TFDEQBwb/hH8AAeiSBmoMCAHKAAeEAajuAIcBAiiSEnokYLKB9n6PkCYgxAA-w
Roamingwise Mesmer is weak, rev has no potential in 1v2s thus I recommend playing war/scrapper if you wanna roam between zergfights, they are the most fun out of classes anyways.
EU Roamer, Dueler, Commander, Fighter, Scout

This is correct, being in a zerg as a mesmer you have the potential to be awesome however don’t expect to get any reward for doing so.
On roaming and havoc it becomes much more effective, old fashioned variations such as condi / PU chrono or Inspiration / Chaos chrono are awesome to play and introduce new game mechanics which were not there before, switch to other classes for larger group play or you’ll regret it.
ewww
We do not need more people playing these lazy low skill builds. Domination, inspiration, Chrono/dueling all the way!
Also on topic to the OP, play whatever makes you happy, engineer scrapper is not in a bad spot at all whether it be roaming or zerging (mortor kit is great for cleaning walls).

TBH you can take your pick, unless you are solo roaming?
I play non-meta thief and can push next to the commander with a short bow, using my dodges well. With warrior I can push in front of commander, using shield and stances. Ultimately it is your understanding of the flow of battle (when to rez, when to fall back, etc.) more than class that wins WvW.
Engis are far from useless these days.
Revs are the expansion class, enough said.
Yall are fantastic. Seems warrior and scrapper mgiht be my 2 :-p
