Returning player, current state of WvW?
I’m assuming you didn’t like what HoT brought. If that’s the case—no, you won’t like the current state of WvW.
To give a better answer, I’d need more info on what things you feel are good or bad.

It’s not that I didn’t like what the XPac brought, that’s just when I happened to leave the game and start playing other games, as a few of my friends had left GW2. I was in a guild at the time that was very hardcore w/ practice times and roaming WvW for big points to flip or looking for other GvG style fights. Didn’t really feel anything was particularly bad per say.
I would say it’s pretty active at the moment. Even tier 4 servers will queue multiple map on week days.
I assume that you’re aware that most servers are linked now, so we only have 4 tiers of matchups instead of the 8 that we had when HoT launched. Populations are still down, but the links have helped keep WvW more active and fun.
beware of lag that anet cannot fix.. the server isp is bottlenecked so you will get horrid lag in wvw and most of the new maps. Relogging helps sometimes.. but the game also has a major memory leak as well. After a while (even with the 64 bit client) the game will run out of memory and you will begin to see effects/players/weapons etc disappear. Eventually the game will crash or blue screen you. After 4 years.. we are still waiting on a fix for this.

those lags happens only during the prime time of the servers, and mostly when 50+ condi zergs decide to clash with other 50+ condi zerg. as for memory leaks and BSODs I haven’t seen a single one in over a year and I have got some crazy marathons of 8h+ in WvW
[and even those BSODs year ago for all the info I could get was most likely GPU overheating due to hot summer and cooling system not being efficient enought to compensate….]
and while you could hope for a “fix” of memory leaks there is no reall way to just “fix” lags – they can try to improve optimisation of certain elements but there is no golden bullet to that one :|
as for current state of WvW for all I can tell – depends on what you are into – if you prefer small groups operating on side fronts, ambushing enemy players, ruining their lines of supply and so on – it’s quite good as long as it is not the prime time with 50+ condi zergs deciding to have a clash at that specific map.
if you are into being a zergling and running within 50+ blobs with all the meta builds and so on – well good luck with your lags :|

GvG and small-scale are pretty much entirely dead. If you came for organized skill-play, look elsewhere, sad to say.
If you just want a casual spam-keyboard-and-blob or really enjoy playing the FoTM cheese builds, you’ll be back at home. Most of the experimentation and tactical play has gone to the wayside, however.

Pretty simple question, just looking for opinions if WvW is currently in a good state for a returning player. I played from release up until the expansion release. On JQ (T1 at the time, not sure atm) so population wasn’t a problem for me. Always played WvW exclusively.
Just want opinions if it’s worth coming back to. Obviously like many I saw the new XPac and wanted to give it a go again if it’s still enjoyable.
Let see.
Since then….
- JQ’s SEA has dispersed. Don’t be mistaken, there are still SEA but not as huge.
- Matchup populations increased due to the linking but populations imbalance still exist.
- Population calculation is now base on play hours.
- We also have something called skirmish score where 24 hours are divided into 12 slices and having the highest warscore will win that slice, main purpose is to equalize night capping scoring.
- WvW rewards improved, wvw unique skins and legendary backpiece
- We have squads UI and many more tag colros
- Team chat is now cross map chat
- WvW skills’ requirements reduced
- Added shield generator
- Added a new wvw borderland map
As for worth it or not, I can’t say, I am not you.
