I also wanted to know how s/d Theives are right now in wvw. I used to like to play them in pvp.

I play a S/D thief in WvW, instead of D/D or D/P/
If you’re good with your CnD, then S/D should be as managable as D/D which is the favorite among gank teefs.
I’d say that D/P is safe: you can really utilize your SA traits to keep yourself alive as long as you dont get caught out.
S/D is more active play than D/P since you have a bit less access to stealth, you’re more worried about your positioning and landing bursts than a backstab thief. IMO S/D thieves work together best with other gank/roaming classes
D/D are still the kittens that i can never kill on my mesmer. Feels like all the pro teefs run D/D
D/p and P/d are so cheesy. Having tried several condi builds for my thief I can confidently say the gameplay is passive and requires no skill whatsoever to play (especially if you throw perplexity runes on your condi thief and use condition duration foods) I could kill players and order pizza at the same time on a condi thief. Honestly man, S/D is fun to play IMO, and a lot less cheesy. D/D is of course a viable option too.
Why not run all of them instead of just picking one?
Against multiple opponents CnD is easier to gain stealth.
The only thing I advise against is PD condi.
Playing PD condition thief will give you cancer.
All thieves are cheesy in WvW no matter what the build. And I say this as someone who has a thief and uses it in WvW occasionally. And when I do, I am cheesy.
It doesnt make sense to choose one weapon loadout for all game modes. Since you didnt specify what youre using the weapon set for, my advice is to buy cheap weapons and try them out in pvp.
Also if you have some spare time and dont mind pve, dungeons are a way to get exotics. Also keep in mind that you can craft em, buy with wvw tokens and even get donations from guildies.
S/P wasnt mentioned, so I’m doing so. Its good for zerging and coordinated spikes. If youre zerging dont use dagger mainhand cuz it only hits 2 targets where sword hits 3, hits harder, and applies anti zerg conditions.
Well you could try the ninja medic thief build.

Try the sPvP d/p meta in WvW. Hard mode for sure, but fun as hell when you pull it off (plus very good practice)!
On topic though:
- Dagger/Dagger: More burst than with pistol off-hand, but harder to gain stealth unless you are good at landing Cloak and Dagger.
- Dagger/Pistol: Blinds, lots of them too! Good burst, very good survivability and the king of trolling! This is also the king of dueling because of the on-demand stealth, interrupt, gap closers and hard hitting attacks.
- Sword/Dagger: Less burst, lots of sustain. Good for dueling, especially in outnumbered situations. All the evades can be really annoying to fight, so prepare for a lot of QQ – but that applies to almost every thief build. :p
I am playing D/P in PvP and WvW – same build in both game modes. It is a lot of fun, but very unforgiving.

S/D is fun to play IMO …. D/D is of course a viable option too.
I find S/D more to my liking as well, but it and D/D do not offer the reset of D/P. You can not use dagger 5 when blind, so you lose that almost guaranteed stealth of heartseeker through a blind/smoke field.
For a new player I would say D/P until you are comfortable with the other options, especially if roaming solo. S/D is great unless you run up against another thief running D/P, that will almost always be in their favor.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…

Don’t complain because you lose. Stay on topic.
As to the original question. Any spec works fine. It depends how you are trying to play.
D/D and P/P is ridiculously fun to play right now. It isn’t as efficient and certainly gets killed a lot more but the fun factor is worth it.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
You should probably post this in the teef forums: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief
I personally prefer D/D, but S/D does comparable damage in practice and offers a bit more utility with cripple/weakness, teleport, longer evade, and boon strip. D/P is also very strong, especially if you trait 6 points into SA (not that you need to); the weapon set is more defensive than the other two and usually comes down to patiently waiting for your opponent to make a mistake.
If you’re learning teef, I’d recommend S/D because it’s a very well-rounded weapon set with applications in both PvP and WvW. It’ll also mean you’ll probably trait 6 points into trickery, instead of the outdated x/6/6/x/x, which will do much more for teaching you teef fundamentals.
Any is fine. I find it easier to play using s/d due to the evades and crap. Also a fan of infiltrator’s strike. But I lack patience and thus suck with d/p
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
