Salvaging siege
Never going to work, that is far more trollable by just removing all the siege.
Err… yes? You did spot where I said it either needed to be the player who set the siege or by anyone after a suitable cool down; as long as this is longer than it takes a paper ram to knock down a fortified gate (or similar siege/target combo) then removing the siege after you’ve used it is much less annoying…
Yes but the timer for this obviously has to be less than the current siege decay timer. Those people who build and refresh their siege every hour run the risk of someone just coming along and removing it. Or are you now suggesting people should visit siege more than once every hour? If not how does this timer work you suggest?
Even then the timer for semi built siege is 9 mins…. how does that fit into everything?
Try solving some of the blatant issues before you declare my counter completely moot.
DAL: I understand what you mean now that you’ve explained it properly. If the timer aspect is a problem this could be avoided by making the siege salvageable by the original player as I suggested in my original post. This would also fit with a requests= in earlier forum threads to make siege identifiable (set a playerAccountName tag on siege that can be used to identify who dropped it and perhaps also who can salvage…).
I have in the past spent plenty of time both placing siege and refreshing it. Your reaction to my post made me think back and I can’t recall seeing any pre-placed defensive siege since the Deserted BL launched. Whether this is because there are no players to refresh it and it is lost or because people don’t defend any more I don’t know. Perhaps this makes the problem of defensive siege salvage moot in itself?
Anyway, whether siege salvage would work or not is, like any idea, worth a quick discussion even if it is finally dismissed. I’m not trying to solve a problem here, I merely put an idea up for consideration and invited feedback. You gave your opinion – so thank you
This is a concept that’s been discussed several times in the past. I’m all for the idea. I tend to place a lot of siege, and I’d like to be able to adjust something I didn’t put in quite the right spot, or remove something that turned out to be pretty much useless. However, it needs to have failsafes. Otherwise, a troll will just come by after any cooldowns, and tear it down and will most likely just burn the supplies on troll siege. Then you run into the weird situation of a troll and a legitimate player going back and forth tearing down each other’s siege and rebuilding their own. Which actually works to the troll’s advantage, since more supplies would need to be spent with each rebuilding.
One failsafe idea we kicked around was a public vote, and/or having it so only a commander would be able to deconstruct siege. Sure, you’d get the occasional troll that would be stupid enough to tag up to deconstruct siege, but…. that would just make it easier to report them. Granted, that doesn’t mean much if Anet doesn’t actually do anything about them. But it does let everyone on the map know exactly who’s deconstructing what at least. Names on who placed the siege would help too.
But….. Anet’s solution will probably just be an NPC that places all of the siege (improperly) at a structure for you the instant you flip the towers, so the karma train can keep on chugging.
I really like the idea of salvaging siege because it would allow individuals to store siege somewhere so when the enemy takes all their camps and fortifications they could still have access to some supply. Even better would be if Commanders could have a lock on it and allow only their members to access it.
Perhaps we could place extra seige inside buildings or else hide it outside in the woods and hope the enemy doesn’t find then destroy it. It would give an extra dimension to the game – both for defenders/attackers needing to build siege and for solo roamers hoping to find hidden the siege. This might be boon for the huge Desert Borderlands as it has so many places to hide stuff.
Not sure how it would work in practice as changes can have knock-on effects and it might upset the balance of supply but I hope something likes this comes about soon.
By the way, I love both defending and attacking but when hope of supply fades it becomes a desperate situation.
