Obviously coverage is a problem for every server except T1.

Why not make the evening hours, 6-9pm (of the respective timezone), be the ONLY block of the day that contributes to the score? WvW could be open 24/7 for skirmishing and practicing and bragging, but the evening hours where server occupation is at its peak is when WvW should really count.

1. It means maps can and will be queued for for maximum turnout when it matters
2. Servers can focus on skill and multitasking and not sweeping empty maps with no effort
3. No more waking up with 50 PPT because someone stayed up all night to lead another server
4. Scores stay competitive to the end of the matchup
5. Morale doesn’t break

Breaking scoring into sessions was mentioned on these forums 3 years ago as well!

Complained about WvW before it became cool.

First issue. Sounds like the way EOTM is handled (3 hour battles that reset) would satisfy you. Obviously this would mean 3 megaservers.

1. Dynamic opening and closing maps to adjust to queues would insure maximum turnout.

2. I am not saying use EOTM map itself, but the map design determines the ability of servers to “sweep maps” or “multitask” if populations are equal.

3. Waking up to 50 ppt wouldn’t happen sense the score resets.

4. Depends if the end of match rewards are enough or the game play loop is engaging enough to keep the game mode “competitive” as you say.

5. Morale based on points wont be broken on log in due to score resetting every 3 hours.

If this is not what you intended, my second issue is of alienating a server’s/guild’s community. Simply put, those outside the 3 hour window will feel left out of their community’s success or failures.

Obviously this sort of…“solution to coverage wars” topic has been brought up dozens of times with remedies and fixes suggested by players. The only sensible solution I feel is the following, and this idea essentially makes everyone’s effort equally beneficial to the community regardless of timezone or inactive/active maps.

Activity Based Scoring:

You can also call it ABS (touching, yes?)

Points are gained by capturing an objective, and per each upgrade of objectives.(both of which give increased points for each tier). There is no more “ticking.” This also assumes current PPK of 1 is in place.

Capture and Upgrade example points: Objective: Tier 1,Tier 2, Tier 3

PPK (points per kill): 1, 1, 1
Supply yak: 1, 1, 1 (keep this at one always)
Camp: 1, 2, 3
Tower: 5, 10, 15
Keep: 20, 40, 80
Stone Mist: 30, 60, 100

The specific numbers can vary, but I am looking for a ratio of objective points and points per kill are 1:1 something that can only be figured out on Anet’s end with their metrics. Right now, PPK is insignificant in determining the winning server in a balanced situation.

Main points:

1. Means a tier 1 tower on an “inactive” borderland is worth less than getting a tier 3 tower on an “active” borderland where it would take more effort or activity.

2. Means that even if a whole borderland is flipped, and upgraded it will not inflate or exacerbate “coverage” problem by ticking points over an “inactive” time.

3. This also provides score incentive to attack harder objectives since their value scales with tier, and that would hopefully increase fights/aggression.

4. Final and most important point, this WILL NOT FIX POPULATION. That is determined by ANET and communities. This is intended to provide EQUAL VALUE FOR SCORING.

Using timezones to make a hypothetical assumption on the activity of the WvW population is incredibly bad design compared to using the actual active WvW population no matter the time.

Yes. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. It is 100% impossible to satisfy everyone, unfortunately, without destroying fairness and balance, which currently does not exist anyways. You would not be losing anything you’ve already contributed, since it was already nulled.

I disagree, and I gave 5 reasons why in my post. You didn’t give any.

I highlight this to ask a question.

What if the peak time varies from day to day, month to month and season to season?

In other words what is peak today may not be peak in 6 months time. I just don’t see how this could work over the long term.

what is happening with players, they think na/eu server are divided based on time zone .

that is not the case na/eu are divided based on ping. if you play from eu u’ll get higher ping on na servers & same goes for eu cuz of the technical limitations.

this is why mmos breaks region not because of timezone but people seems to think otherwise & think their time is superior to others who are not from their timezone.

I totally disagree with this, try to find another way to make game equal not discriminating players for playing some times or others, you should take into consideration that most of the upgrading work people see on prime time is done out of prime time.

TOTAL WAR doesnt not happen within 3 hour blocks.

WvW should be as it is…permanent. I smell night capping Q_Qers in this thread…

Besides poor rewards and bad borderland maps, what is killing WvW is population imbalance.

Megaservers needed. When we have megaservers at WvW then the most important thing will be guilds and guild pride = Guild Wars 2…finally the name of the game will fit its meta.

Ridiculous idea. The events of that 3 hour prime slot depend hugely on what happens prior during the rest of the day.

There are plenty of other option to explore with increased ppk ratio, variable ppt slots, weighed scoring and so on without resorting to a frankly idiotic suggestion that only 1 small time slot should matter towards determining the winner of a MU.

By that same logic the sPvP MMR is a player issue and not Anets problem. Get a group or be content where you are, haha. I’d love to tell everone that whine on the PvP forum that, unfortunetly we know that Anet will try to fix that kitten anyway just to placate players.

But granted, I get your point. We might as well just kitten WvW and only play EoTM – at least there the unbalanced maps only last 3 hours before its reshuffled. No need to even try to improve WvW and make it less dependant on coverage.

This is a bad idea and you should feel bad

If anything, scoring needs to happen on a shorter interval to reduce the effects of backcapping.

Edit: Scoring from structures also needs to be nerfed hard while points from kills buffed, at the same time nullifying any points potentially gained if a person was hit by siege damage within a certain amount of time, encouraging players to come out and fight for their points.

Score itself is indeed pointless for many but it decides which servers you going to fight in the future and so it becomes a factor.

This is at the heart of the matter. The real solution is to drop the concept of regional servers if possible. Then full map coverage becomes a trivial issue.

However the internet ping issue is not likely to be resolved. One solution is regional switching of servers based based on time. For instance, having three 8 hour blocks (NA, EU, SEA) and then each server synchronize game state and switches over to the next time zone server cluster. This means that those playing on their “active” time block (for NA maybe 4pm to midnight) play on the NA server cluster, but after midnight players are dumped briefly (like a mini reset) and then the EU server clusters take over.

This would cause some ping problems for those that play during odd hours but overall it resolve the coverage wars problem and only cause 3 brief interruptions to play a day.

Of course the concept of a “world” should get ditch for large alliances also to resolve population imbalance problems. And have tiers not based on scoring but alliance population.

I’m sure I am missing a multitude of technical issues but I am just throwing this out there. Probably wont happen but it would be nice.

And instead, latency become a major issue.

Elder Scrolls Online did this. Well actually they said that EU and NA was separate at launch and then when players caught on the truth it was like “oh right we forgot about that, you are all playing on US servers” followed by months of silence.

ESO AvA was kitten in the EU. Unplayable lagfests. And guess how hard the game bombed? Yeah. Regional servers are needed.

Which is why I suggested a server cluster rotation so that the prime playing times of all time zones would be able to avoid lag. It would only impact those there were playing during not standard times for those regions (mornings and and the middle of the night.)
