Server Match up is terrible
On behalf of SoR I am sorry dude. You guys got delt a really bad hand this time. Crappy dice roll. SoR isn’t happy about the match up either we want competition. sorry about the spawn camping but I cant control what others do. This kinda thing always happens. It happend to us last time siege was broken and it couldnt be thrown down. All while BG and JQ could throw down siege and we couldnt in EB so, we were just there a couple weeks ago. Anyways this week is probably going to suck man but no hard feelings.

at least SoS gets free ratings for coming last anyway.
Besides that, yep, these matchups are silly.
Quite often a server gets massive PPT that is due to coverage and skill.
I would love to get a official answer about what they think of these terrible match ups. Of they are going to do something about it or even if they are aware this is a issue.

The Anet employee’s come into wvw drop an ac, get a few bags and think that is how wvw is played. They try and keep the tiny minority of outmanned servers happy by making ac’s op etc etc etkittenil the company gets a true wvw player or two as advisers this crap they introduce will never end.
My rant could go on, but its just absurd atm.
I’m on TC and I agree 100%.
We had near perfect matchups with DB and FA.
Now we have 1 server than runs around in a giant blob of 90 with relative ease and another with barely any coverage.
Who really cares if one fights SoR, SoS or SoT? It’s not like we get to say, “Oh look at SoR, I can’t believe the way Tom Brady runs their offense!”. It’s just a bunch of nameless people no matter who one is fighting.
And nobody wants to play stressful defense for a week so the server with huge coverage gets to steamroll the opposition.
It wasn’t broken before. This is variety for the sake of variety.
I would love to get a official answer about what they think of these terrible match ups. Of they are going to do something about it or even if they are aware this is a issue.

Yeah I’ve no idea why they are so slow to understand this, but bear in mind they just don’t have this promotion/relegation in American. They don’t understand it.
They seem obsessed with thinking it’s bad because it puts tier 1 against tier 3, but don’t understand it’s worst tier 1 and the best tier 3, which is competitive. Also every other server is matched well. We can see this in fact from the random matchups, they only go to heck when it’s a bigger discrepency in ranks.
Why can’t it just be based on the average number of active monthly wvw players, or a variation on that notion.

The moment strategy becomes more important in WvW than numbers, than they can try this new match up for me.
But as long as numbers and zergs, and coverage are the determining factors for succes, I think their goals for the new system can never be met.
Strategy only helps if the numbers differences are moderate. Once a server severely outmans you, no ammount of strategy is going to give you a chance to win.
The new match up system required a new look at WvW mechanics.
They implemented the one while ignoring the other.
That’s the underlying core of the complaints.

I am also on TC but I see a different picture. Sor and TC are dropping because we are not doing a Zerg. We ninja and have been beating up other because of it.
I think the server match up is great cause Zerg servers have moved up in the past cause of the belief you are loosing. People would not join into WvW cause the think dying is bad.
We all must now realize that persistence and defense is more important than dying.

I’m a casual player and I love the new system. After having such static match-ups for so long I don’t mind getting trounced one week and rocking it the next. It’s better than always knowing what awaits me, and it seems some servers are surprising everyone too.
Honestly I’ve been waiting for Anet to screw this one up, I can see how JQ or even BG woulda dropped to face new servers, but why would you take the current number 1 NA and pair it with rank 4 and rank 7 when we have easily beaten rank 2 and 3. This is turning into a sad state for WvW if match ups like these continue to occur.
Easily beat lol sor was 3rd for months and months and only the last two weeks has done anything. You guys pulled in the 2nd eu server and eu is our weakest time zone not that our eu players are not fantastic because they are, but its hard to match those numbers. We have been working on it though and will soon be back to #1. Remember we are the giant slayers and we look forward to a match up where JQ is not a factor.

Teaming up against SoR will absolutely work. Its not going to win you the match of course. But what it will do is allow you to have some fun and a sense of accomplishment.
Because you will be able to fight without having to worry about getting run over in the back by the other server. Turn it into a two front war for SoR and a one front war for TC and SoS.
And of course its not going to work at all times. But believe me, I’m on SBI, and we just got out of a mismatch with DB. And when Mag and us were able to 2v1 DB, it was great fun.

Work on bringing your community more together first of all. Getting more guilds will help you out for a while but if they are getting stressed and dont feel at home then they’ll just start peacing out, breaking apart, or transferring to other servers.
As a business, they only have some many man hours they can commit to WvW on a monthly basis. They have to meet payroll just like every other company.
They also have micro-projects that they have been working on for months that they have to continue to roll out to generate revenue (pets, bonfires, etc.).
Other than fixing culling, they’ve made no substantial changes to WvW – nor are they likely to before GW3 comes out.
They know it’s broken but there is kitten all they can do to fix it.
I give the game one more year. And it won’t be a fun one. The stink of death will appear in about 6 months… then it will just be a sad, sad game….

The tiers are only broken because we Broke it. We kept taking more and more guilds in every where from server to server we are all part of the problem.
Tier 1 broke the system by our greed and now we will be punished for it. Well you will i still have JQ to fight, but it is all good. Maybe it will slowly make some tiers better.
Over all it is a good thing.
90 SoR?…lol I have never seen 90 players period at anytime on SoR in WvW. I have seen 60+ BG and JQ though. The match up is a bad random one but it will be over soon. Look at how long we held them at bay until we just wore them down and took over lol. You could do the same but not if everyone just quits and rolls over. We used tactics and skill to overcome BG and JQ masses….then they just seem to give up but my point is you can try and fight hard or just roll over and give us your badges. I would hope you fight no matter the odds. Heck you might even kick us out…never know unless you try folks. never give up and never surrender!!!

The concept of tiers has little meaning at this point and you should try to stop thinking of matchups in those terms. Servers are matched up by proximity of rating, not proximity of “tier”. If the tiers have ratings that are within the range of the random adjustment, they can end up fighting each other. This is going to result in blowouts, no doubt about it. However, we are not going to make changes to this after just 2 weeks of the system. There are things we can do. We will almost certainly end up adjusting the total added to each server rating to group the matchups a little more closely. First however, we need to let the ratings adjust by having more varied matchups like these. If you look at EU, which is using the exact same system, you can see matchups with numerous surprising results. The same will likely be true by the end of the NA matchup.
TL;DR: We are going to wait at least a couple more weeks before changing any of the math behind the new system, but it is very likely we’ll decrease the size of the variation at some point.
As I posted in a similar thread, part of the problem was because the old system created stagnant ratings. Part of the reason they’re doing this is because the only way to get more accurate ratings is to mixup the matchups more.
The irony is if this new system would have been in place from the start it would have worked well. You know, the time before wvw population thought it would be a good idea to stack into handful of servers.
Would have prevented server hopping somewhat atleast , since you would never knew if the next matchup would be easy rolling.
The problem to me is that there is no reward or incentive other then having “fun”. Now, I would say that is a completely acceptable reward in itself but when you are hopelessly outnumbered it just isn’t that fun. Getting farmed and facing 10v1 fights all week is not going to be much of a turn on for most people. “Hey guys I know we are getting blown out on the scoreboard but we are gaining rank!”…..yea, that’s great if you actually had a tangible reward for putting up a valiant effort against impossible odds but there isn’t. It’s just a bad system in so many ways…..

Do you really need to wait for new data? You have months and months and months of matchups where people changed tiers and went into new matchups. I could try to do the math and research for you but a short glance at match histories, not disproven by current numbers, suggests glicko has been accurate within 200 points for quite some time.
We didn’t wholesale reset ratings the last time there were changes, why do it now?
And even so, why do we need week long matchups to test this? You could just as easily reset ratings to 0 and do day long matchups with much less pain and boredom for everyone.

I think we really need to give this time. Prior to the random matchup t7 eu was a black hole where facing new servers in t6 and above was an impossible dream. Last week the two winners of t7 in the previous two weeks in gh and ros went to t4 and t6 respectively. Gh, facing the r8 and r10 servers should have been thumped and while we were comprehensively defeated we still gained 120k+ points and gained 60 points in glicko.
Meanwhile ros fought in what must have been the closest 3way fight in gw2 history to finish 2nd in their t6 battle.
Now both of us are facing millers who are 6/7 places higher and competing nicely.
While there will be some horrible mismatches in the shortterm it should bring a good balance of stability and variation in the tiers and matches in the long term. I for one like the new matchup system
Patience, guys… patience! Go in there and do the best you can. For now, let the new system have its time in the sun to hopefully give us more accurate data. Oh, and try to enjoy it and learn from the worlds that you’re matched up against, especially when you’re the underdog.
Playing against the bigger kids can make you better! Crystal Desert is definitely making the most of this new system. Hats off to CD!! And hang tough, DB… hang tough!

I think this problem only exist for NA server. I think it has to do with the fact that NA has ‘stacked’ servers where in EU we don’t. Sure some servers have more players but there were some good match ups for EU. RoSvFRvUW being the highlight.
It’s only been two weeks.
People got what they asked for. New enemies to fight. Folks should be happy Anet actually responded to the community demands to change up the math rather then stick with the old system where you fought the same 2 servers for months on end.

Why is it so hard to understand that if we had one up one down SoS would be getting stomped by JQ instead of SoR? I’m not saying this system is perfect, far from it. But this system has the potential to be sooo much better than 1 up 1 down.

only thing i wanted was balanced match, we had perfect setup at NA t2, i could play it even for few months. I have now new enemies and what? I cant do a kitten because we are so outnumbered …

They are going to lower the chance of people fighting higher tiers soon. They are trying to find the ratings that each server should have. What those are is a mystery to me, but that is what Devon is saying.
I think in time the new ranking system could work, but it will take a long time to balance out. Right now it will produce some blowouts that will essentially be over in the first day. It reminds me a lot of the college football rankings. You can lose by 10 points but still have your ranking go up, depending on what team you were playing.
Devon, have you considered going back to 3 day matches, or 24 hour matches to try and balance the ratings faster? This would also give the servers that are being blown out a chance to get a more competitive match quicker, and not have to endure it for a whole 7 days.
Or have you considered adding in the variable of coverage or population?

That website tracks the average points a server scored based on time of day. This could be really helpful in matching servers that have similar coverage times.
The concept of tiers need to still apply since they reflect the capabilities of a server (read: population and coverage).
there needs to be an interlock on the matching algorithm that limits a matchup to only servers one tier below and one tier above your current tier. This is both doable and would most likely keep the nasty imbalances from occurring.
while i like the “mashup” approach, right now the chance of getting relentlessly farmed for a week or getting bored silly from a week-long roflstomp will poison the WvW community in the long term

Maby arena net is trying to defend the players from their stacked up servers JQQ and Blackgate (half of their total players) so they can win to keep them happy i gess.

JQ 1st SOR 2nd BG 3rd for months got old and made BG look like the 3rd best server. I’m a little biased here but since the change BG has been facerolling the supposed best server soooo. The old WvW system took months to sort of stabilize. The new system throw what sense of balance there was right out the window without even opening it.
Measures should be taken that would help to speed up balancing.

It’s just so stupid to whine about imbalanced matchups nowdays when we DO have random roll affecting server points. This new system isn’t about the same level servers facing each other, we had that system for ages and is just sucked. Now we finally have some variety and all the children are whining about losing? SoS, for example, seems to be having some issues with them gaining points. Is your goal to only have easy wins? You deserve the points you gain playing against better servers even if you lose. You’d have to lose greatly to not gain points but you are better than that!
It will take several weeks for this new style system to be balanced and we can see which server really is worth how much points.

Silly BG, always trying to prove themselves to everyone around them. One day maybe you will get the respect your server so yearns for!
This is not a number game like stock market ,hell even the market does not rely on those basis only,close rating only works if u have the data based on population in wvw and right now pairings are bad as the 24 hour coverage on most servers are low.What they should do instead focusing on coalition of the low populous servers each week to take on the bigger ones.A coalition based match ups each week will add more excitement to the game.Right now fa is matched up against maguuma and eb and its is a one sided match,however if those two forge a coalition ,supported by anet ,for a week they could easily reverse the tide and it will be a fun match up ,add another world in the mix(since you need 3) then people flock wvw each week.
