So in my humble opinion ever since Arena Net introduced the world experience points walls and gates have become a little to easy to knock down. I think they should give a little buff to the walls so it takes about the same amount of time it use to before the world experience showed up.
Note: I love the world exp system I don’t want it removed I just think they make it to easy and quick to capture a point.
They need to buff walls and gates as a handicapping mechanism for the losing server(s)
I do not think they should be buffed. I am on Devonas Rest and we have plenty of time being on the bottom of the pile. I still would prefer to see them stay as they are. Current game mechanics allow for decent defense if you commit to it. In order for a opposing force to mount an assault they should have people, supply, siege and time. Reduce any of those as a defender and you improve your outcome. Kill their people or demoralize them by executing a stiff defense. Use defensive siege in clusters at chokes and send sorties out to push them off of offensive siege. Reduce their on hand supply through supply traps, trebuchet mastery, destruction of partially built siege. Reduce available supply through upgrades, fast counter flips, forcing them to burn it on repairs. Take out siege as it is placed or force them to make poor choices by waiting for siege to be placed and built at close range before engaging and destroying it. Reduce their time by having a supporting force working on the enemy borderland drawing them away or striking them around the edges until they feel unsafe and flee or angry and pursue off of the objective. Of course if you have the man power just rolling over them and kicking them in the face is a method.
We had 7 people on multiple AC’s cata’s, trebs , cannons and ballistas in Langor last night. From that fortified tower with a small group of 5 skirmishers we were able to stymy an assaulting force of over 40. At the same time from the same location we opened and recovered our keep. So leave walls and doors alone they are just a small piece of an overall strategy.

Yes getting that defensive mindset is a very real challenge. I lost a treasure in the departure of a skilled and committed siege builder / manager/ defensive minded player. Finding the people that will establish and maintain defenses is a real challenge because their commitment takes time, funds and you have to bring the maneuver force to bear when they need reinforced.
IMO – gates should get fortified with the rest of the tower with the fortify upgrade….. Flame ram masteries is great and all but where is our counter for it?
Walls can get upgraded twice from regular to reinforced to fortify but the gates only go to reinforced… Oil does barely anything unless you can man it without dying in the first 2 seconds and same goes for cannons and if you do live then thank the 15 necros below for placing 40 staff marks on it with 10 fears to keep you away.
Gates should at least be fortified along with the Fortification upgrade IMO, they’ve sped it up far too much with the WXP traits to siege, zerg vs door, and also the price of golems.

Defense is not boring. It is simply not rewarded. Without reward you expulse defenders out of WvW or they are most of the time forced to run in zergs to get rewards. I am a passionate defender, but I am simply falling behind in respect to WXP and other reward without zerging from time to time. Other defenders simply left or do not even enter WvW.
I think they need to reduce the damage players deal against doors so that a large zerg isn’t significantly faster at kicking down a door than a smaller one (assuming your standard 3 Flame Rams).
In fact I think it would be good if only melee weapons could damage doors. At least that way Oil might see more use.
Another problem is that burning oil and cannons are too prone to damage. They are to exposed and melt down in seconds. The user dies even faster. There should be upgrades (unlocked by higher tiers in mastery and buyable from vendors) available that provide more defensibility to that kind of siege and much more protection to the user.

A shield mechanic like Karkas have would also be nice: destroy the shield before you can damage the real target.

Agree and disagree. Agree that it is not rewarded. Disagree about the boring part. It is insanely boring. Even if the rewards were equal, more people would play offense. Why? It’s more fun to use your character than to sit on a piece of siege.

At the moment the reward system attracts almost exclusively people who like the offensive play. No wonder that the majority is bored by defensive tasks.
From my observations I can say there were much more defenders at the beginning compared to now. Most left WvW caused by the lack of rewards and decent progression. Without passionate defenders it is much harder to upgrade and defend objects. It is much harder to find people for scouting to locate hostile zergs on the map.
This results in a faster loss of towers and keeps. The absence of defenders leads to threads like this where fortified walls and doors are demanded. In last consequence objects would also need self-shooting weapons with automated targeting to simulate defenders.

how about yes but give outnumbered buff a +20% siege damage to gates and walls.
