I absolutely loved season 1. I will be waiting in anticipation for a season 2.

I agree there needs to be some work done in balancing servers and I do hope that this is to be worked on before leagues.

I started playing WvWvW in about 4 weeks before Ligue started and i was an upscaled newbie. First week playing i thought that we literally own SM like our keep and wp there is permanent Now i know what a real competition looks like, and i adore it.
I think we’ll need Ligues running more often cuz playing without long view goal arn’t that fun

Season 1 really messed up some things in wvw. It seems some server just don’t care to fight. It’s all about points again, not about fighting the enemy.

Your server is activ at the evening? Well okay have our border we will take it and all your land back in the night when we know you’re not awake any more. You want to fight something? Take these few twinks to fight you so you’re bored even more.

How often did i see a bigger enemy zerg port out of a tower just to take over a different tower…

Everyone saying about “unbalanced matches” 1) has never faced Vizunah Square 2) Has no idea that games are not supposed to be balanced, some win, some lose, that’s the fun part 3) Need to relax and stop complaining.

Some servers are big, some are small. Some have good coverage, some not. Some are the best, some are the worst. That’s how things are. Players and commanders in each server roam differently, zerg differently and think differently. Each server and each commander are developing their own unique style. Season 1 was awesome exactly because of that. OF COURSE, there should be a Season 2, so the WvW community can keep expanding and offering everyone amazing moments.

I can’t even begin to think why someone would not want a Season 2. It’s selfish, at its very very core. You’re asking for the best part of the game to die just because your server did poorly. Even if you didn’t like Season 1, there’s room of improvement (undeniably) so there should, again, be a Season 2.

The seasons, without a doubt, drew a massive amount of people to WvW. I think after seasons are over, almost all servers will find their WvW core population has increased substantially. People got a taste of WvW and are now addicted to it, it even happened to Wooden Potatoes lol.

That said, it needs more polish. I think (for NA) 4 leagues and a 5 week season would be better, or something like that. I think there needs to be more leagues to keep the competition a little tighter. The difference, for example, between Sorrow’s Furance and say Devona’s Rest is beyond massive. They’re not even close. With 4 leagues of six servers bronze/silver/gold/diamond it would be much more competitive. You could also do 9 servers in, say, silver league, and only 3 in diamond, though that would make diamond more competitive while silver would probably be less competitive.

I have never been a big fan of ZvZ. I won’t call it world vs world, because its really not. Its zerg central, and they with the biggest wins. zerg style play isn’t fun…for me. I hoped the addition of the meta would help me enjoy this aspect of the game, but I only hate it more now. The whole concept could have been a great tool to promote strong guilds. I still think changing ZvZ into a giant version of tPvP would be better. Let guilds and Alliances queue up for those maps, put a cap on team size, THEN start a league. This would encourage guild recruiting, alliances, as well as healthy competition. As it is, it is simply unfun and encourages hateful attitudes in the community.

I think ANET could separate leagues better. Then again… They’re kinda oblivious to population imbalance, sooooo maybe not.

I liked the WvW achievements though, so that was nice. Still feel like WvW is a lot less rewarding than pve.

Yes BUT (let me explain)

The queues, the AP farmers, the PvErs in some ways it was rather horrible, the number of facepalm moments were astounding.

Having said that, the WvW scene is now reinvigorated. I have no doubt that some of those that came for seasons have come to realise how much they enjoy WvW. These people are the commanders of tomorrow.

It was good to do BUT there needs to be some space, time for everything to settle down. Older players can go back to their old thing and new players can become part of the old thing.

Then you can look at a season 2.

Making WvW something competitive feels wrong. Its supposed to be a giant playground for wrecking each other. The fact that reward has been based on server performance has been a slap in the face to the smaller servers. Frankly I don’t even like all the people on my server. The only reason i team with half of them is because the game forces me to. WvW isnt about team selections or recruitment or some big grand scheme, its about dumb luck and trying to rate people by it has aggrevated me, if not a few others.

All the league did was increase the number of matches that were boring and not competitive. No more leagues until we fix how the winners are determined or parity between servers (free guild transfers to lower ranked servers…an actual guild transfer process…)

At First I jumped on the hype bandwagon that Anet started, the 1st week started with the “juggernauts” of the Silver League facing each other.
What we got is long queues and mass amounts of lag from what we called “Achievement Hunters”.

We won the first week, then the week after that and from then on we had the “momentum” to win consecutive weeks up to that point.
That is due to having the superior coverage thanks to that boost in population, from the hype of playing for a potential reward.

It’s great to see new players want to get involved in wvw these days, but you have to question the motive behind it once the Leagues end and we all receive our reward.
I don’t mean to be harsh but the reality is: We’ve had an easy ride during this Season, due to Population Imbalance and differences in Server Philosophy.

It’s led to misinformation about our Community wanting to drop on purpose to dominate the Silver League, which has led to many Toxic Matchup threads.

We lost alot of Guilds before hand due to an unstable Community, some may have left partly because they wanted to compete in the “big” Gold League, or the NA ladder which has tons more coverage from different timezones.

That has led to us gaining a bad image and reputation, because we are heavily reliant on our PUGS; who have stuck around but there is still many who are drilled into the “skewed” PPT game.
Many still do not know what is required in terms of Builds and outside of Zerging, IMO this is mainly due to so many blowouts in most of our matchups, that has let people be complacent.

Once the Leagues finish I worry about the effect it’ll do to the population of each server, there are people that have put in alot of effort to win that Dolyak Finisher and the reward, so they will be feeling burned out. (yeah I know it’s hard to imagine)
Facing stronger servers may well do damage to our community, unless we manage to get more Guilds in; which is near impossible while the cost is 1800 gems.

Leagues may have brought about a Schedule that everyone knows, aswell as some competitiveness back to wvw, but the competitive side of gaining Points in wvw is just not working right, when there are so many blowouts due it turning into: Coverage Wars.

However it’s best to ignore the PPT and score when there’s these blowouts occurring so often, to just have fun until Anet can worked out a solution to make Match-ups more competitive.

TL;DR I don’t think there should be a Second Season; Not for a long while. Sorry for the length.

-The achievements brought more people into wvw. Some of them might stay and that’s good.

- Some of the achievements came through my normal game play and I didn’t have to pay attention to them. That’s good.

- Some of them I had to change to do, such as had to do the jp’s and figure out I should treb stonemist to get demolition achievement. That’s ok as it was relatively painless for me.

- Some were not good. Sentry and yak ones were way too many and too dependent on the other side. I think those ones, especially the yak killer one encouraged bad behavior.
You would be better off to not flip a camp back and lurk around to wait for yaks to spawn. Glad I could skip those and replace with jp’s.

- The matches were way too unbalanced. Often one server dominated too much for the others to have any chance of first place during some or all weekly matchups.

-People started karma training more and more because you just couldn’t hold on to your places against the really high population servers. Some people got discouraged and took a break from wvw. Hopefully they will come back.

I enjoy wvw and use it to relax and take a break from the “living story pve job”. Suddenly, I found myself not enjoying wvw or finding it relaxing until I had completed the 15 achievements. Then I relaxed and started having fun again. I hope they don’t turn it into an achievement job like pve seems now.

I think with some adjustment they can make that better. For example, have 20 or 25 different things to work on with only needing 15 of them. Make them with less to do to get each one. They should just be participation checks but not grind checks. Some one who prefers defense should be able to quickly complete them and then go back to defense. I guess they want to assure that there is something that takes the entire time to do but really that isn’t necessary. Someone should be able to jump in the last couple of weeks and easily complete it. If you like wvw you will continue. If you don’t, why prolong the agony?

It was sort of discouraging to know at the very first day that there was no way your server had a prayer of winning the league.

I think more leagues are needed. I know that it is desired that servers sort themselves out as far as population goes and going 2 versus 1 against the big server. But that doesn’t seem to be happening yet.

tldr: More leagues. Change achievements to eliminate bad behavior and grind. Think about what type of behavior an achievement will encourage. Having to kill 20 or 30 yaks won’t cause bad behavior. However having to kill 200 or 300 will.

Not for our server. We did not participate in season 1. No need for season 2.

What do I like? The only thing I have liked about this is the concept.

The massive imbalance is match-ups.

The open bribery to transfer to servers. Our Server and many others lost guilds to gold league servers after being paid to transfer… Of course we lost a few guilds to other silver league servers as well, but in almost every case there losing them might be seen as an upgrade in quality for our server.

The self centered achievements that promote solo play that has NOTHING to do with any PPT objectives.

How about achievements like:
Kill X enemy players while defending a tower.
Upgraded X number of supply camps.
Escorted X number of yaks safely
X number of supply camps held against enemy attack.

etc etc. All of those would promote Objective play not OMG squirrel!!!!

But as for myself.. The imbalance of these match-ups combined with the guild piracy and population issues has really made me sit and think about even participating in WvW at all. What is the point of putting in all that time and effort when you know a 60+ man zerg is coming by when you only have 15 or so on to defend a map? People can argue that skill vs size will win, but that is simply false. If server A has 60+ and server B has less than 20 the 60 will win through pure attrition.

My server has had entire guilds simply stop being involved in WvW because there is no fun in getting rolled by 2 to 3 times your population week after week.

If Anet doesn’t do something about the population balance issues and keeps on with the same match-ups WvW will simply not be a viable option for players on my server to have any kind of fun with GW and for many of us the only reason we are here is for the WvW. So that leaves us with no reason to stay with GW2 at all.

The Season was a success. Lets face it. People who didn’t care about WvW care now. The reason why you hear a lot of whining about losing in WvW is because more people care now. The point still stands though: the competition was not good enough for the season to be strong and fun. Blackgate steam-rolled all their matches. We have been complaining about guilds from other servers transferring away to lower tiers. Its hard to imagine that Blackgate will be so stacked for maybe months to come while other servers struggle to even get the coverage.

ArenaNet wanted to make WvW more populated with the season and it worked. However, if it doesn’t retain those numbers afterwards, then what is the point?

Also, I didn’t like the grind of the acheivements. I don’t want people repairing paper gates for cheevies. Why should I do WvW jps when three of them are just clones? I don’t want to be forced to slap dolyaks for your amusement. Maybe count the Defenders kills, Tower flips, and the such but don’t make jps and the like a part of the season when they have nothing to do with the objectives. The hardest people to reign in are the 15-20 from the zerg that all sit in the sentry spot that you asked to be left alone.

Again: I don’t see why not. I mean I am in a bottom of the bronze bracket server who had 4 of our main WvW guilds leave in the past 4 months and commanders screw us over, but it is free achievement points. It does give some competition to it. Despite being screwed over, we managed to hang in there, so it really has to do with what server you play on.

First of all, I fully believe there should be a 4th league where each league is divided by 6 servers. I do not feel that (no offense, but…) NSP, IoJ, or CD really belonged in Silver, not against servers like SBI and DB, etc. (FA should have been in Gold, IMO.) Near as I can tell, all of those servers have struggled if not outright been decimated in more than half of their matchups this season. However, I also don’t believe the bottom 6 servers would stand much of a chance against the 3 I’d knock down to Bronze, hence a 4th league.

Some other comments I agreed with:

“If anything that does more harm than good to communities and promotes the “Why should I go out and play if I’m only going ot get face rolled” mentality. I’d imagine this is even worse for the low ranked siver and bronze servers that have yet to win a match.”

This is what happened to my server. Contrary to the belief that the season brought more people to WvW, we lost a lot of participation because we were being crushed so badly by opponents that should have been out of our league. It’s been very demoralizing and has really hurt our already fragile WvW population.

“One good example of this was in week 2 I think, when we were trying to hold garrison and we had solo players robbing the place of supply just to get the achievment.”

The repair achievement was the most self-detrimental one in the bunch. Upgrading SMC in particular was an exercise in frustration because people would drain the supply repairing walls that were continuously taking treb damage. I would rather not see this achievement next time.

I surprisingly thought most of the achievements were set to reasonable amounts, but sentries, yaks, and mercenary camps seemed very unrealistic, especially if you don’t solo roam or run havoc groups getting those achievements would be approaching the impossible.

The only way I got the yak achievement was by camping enemy camps, which meant not flipping them, which also seems counterproductive to the overall WvW effort. I was lucky in that due to being on a bottom of the totem pole server the enemy BL camps were rarely ever flipped and didn’t pay attention to their dolyaks.

Sentries & merc camps are just not happening. Those amounts should be readjusted, IMO.

I really dont care for season 2 if there is one. I just enjoy WvWvW because of the huge fights you can get in. I dont really care for points honestly, let alone the rewards we will recieve… wont be that great.
I mean really, a dolyak finisher depending on where your server placed (cheesy). And a key to a chest… if RNG hasn’t screwed you enough already. What makes you think the rewards in the chest are actually gonna be worth it over some no#s, that when off season don’t mean anything other than rank/tier???

The standings speak for themselves. The last week of the season, there are a lot of positions up for grabs. Gonna be interesting to see how the final week ends.

I think the season was fun. Had some pretty garbage match ups at times, but we had those before seasons, so that doesn’t really matter. The scoring system was better, and watching some of the close match ups on MOS, like DH first victory of FC, was interesting.

I honestly thought that the seasons were more fun than just random match ups with no incentive tied to them. Sure, there are winners and losers, but it is like that in every competition.

I can’t wait for season 2.

Season 1 was just terrible for my server as a whole and if not, killed wvw even more. Unlike the higher pop servers like SBI/FA where they got transfers+ ppl got more interested in wvw, the wvw population in NSP has not increased, if not even decreased. We got DOMINATED EVERY WEEK throughout the season in silver, IOJ as well. Heck my guild enjoyed the fights but server-wise, ppl hated it. Its so bad that the only competition is to see who comes in last place, IOJ or NSP. NSP and IOJ do not have the coverage and numbers to compete in silver at all and that means we get no competition because we don’t stand a chance at all. Unless some population balances are implemented for season 2, it wouldn’t be wise to have one at all because the wvw population of low rank servers are just gonna suffer even more, if not even die out.

I personally liked the start of the season, but anyone who’s competed in any sport (or has common sense really) knows that you lock team/player transfers before the competition starts.

For achievements, they’re all things you do while on the offence, and there are none for defence except the repair achievement, which is a hit and miss because if your server is dominating, depending on when you play, you may never get the chance to actually repair anything.

With the account bound WXP and the chance for alts/other toons to come into play in WvW (hopefully less warriors/guards), spvp type achievements might work well (get 50 kills as a ranger, necro etc).

Every regular commander I’m sure really doesn’t want the sentry achievement in S2.

SBI – Silver
Season 1: Mixed.

The Good:
-Having to care about PPT is actually kind of fun. It makes every tick a bit more interesting. With people scrambling about getting camps and towers means WvW actually have a real sense of urgency. Defending camps and towers are a bit more meaningful.

The Bad
-However, the lack of coverage will hurt every small server against the bigger servers they face. And this season only emphasized it so much more. PPT, afterall, is mostly about coverage. If people come out strong in NA prime time, they’ll still lose if the other server have better SEA coverage, even if we beat then in NA time.

- Bandwagon transfers. The poor gets poorer, and the rich gets richer. It’s bad, and it made most matches roflstomps than anything really competitive.

-PPT got so serious people started “spying” on other servers and wasting supply. This is easily the most blatant unfair play I’ve seen to date. It’s bloody annoying, and having to see the same guy wasting supplies for 3+ days while many of us already reported him is troubling and well, frustrating. It’s hard to just take it when supplies IS the essence of the game.

-Achievements doesn’t favour defense. There are virtually no achievements in defense (repairing stuff is contradictory to good defense, it’s supposed to be proactive, not reactive). It also fueled a lot of PVE-ers when serious WvW guilds are stuck in queue for hours. Having an entire zerg stand in Sentries is just ridiculous. Giving up SM for more achievement sakes. The list goes on and on.

Enjoyed Season 1: I dont know, there was this weird buff called “outmanned” almost permanently on our borderlands. It made regular play fairly difficult. <— sarcasm

S2: would try again, but please please please check the wvw competiteveness of the servers before you sort them into tiers. Then stop all transfers on the day the new league is announced. That way all the opportunistic server hoppers are grounded and have to fight it out wherever they are.

At the end of the season I feel like we were just reduced to NPCs that flip the same 3 camps and 2 towers so the enemy can flip them back. No use playing like that.

What can I say, we pulled the short straw in this competition. Small fun and small reward. That happens once – well, file it under just another life experience. But if the next league starts out like this one I will not participate.

Should we have season 2: No if there are no changes. Maybe with some changes that are more balanced. Almost every match in Silver was a monster blow out. There were some exceptions but by the end players were tagging out on really hard weeks and tagging in on more even matchups.

If they are going to have a Season 2… my suggestion is to have the match run 24 or 48 hours from reset. One or two day matches each week for N weeks to determine the winner. Weekends have better coverage for all servers, little time for a match to get way out of hand and would allow week day matches to be more laid back. This would also give a breather for teams that got crushed over the weekend.

Enjoyed: Somewhat, but leaning more towards No. The new people were great, but at the same time, but it brought out the worst in people. Double teams went on, guilds were bought, and overall, the matchup was made by a gopher that punched “Randomize” and hoped it would make sense. SoR didn’t even get red at all, we just got the green side. (which is broken, the amount of people in green borderland is lowered)
Again?: No. Unless crap is fixed.

Enjoyed season 1: no, not any more than I would have enjoyed regular wvw match ups. In fact, probably less.
Should we have a season 2: no. Not in the current format. I think some interesting things came from the league like having real wvw achievements, but I think it did way more harm than good and shouldn’t happen again.

I’m sorry, but ANet doesn’t even try to pretend balance is a concern of theirs in WvW between the classes. We also had a huge thread discussing server population and coverage imbalance which also likely fell on deaf ears. I have no clue what the rewards are going to be for this league, but most of the players knew the winners and loser going into this thing. Was a complete waste of time on a good week, was nothing but aggravation on a bad one (which was about 3/4 of the league).

Once ANet can get the classes more inline and merge a couple servers so WvW is even remotely balanced (3:1 for the past 4 weeks is not even trying to be balanced) it’s a complete waste of time. The League probably scared off more players then the ones who actually enjoyed it.

It was fun having a load of new people in WvW and nice that WvW is continuing to get more attention. However, it would be nice if Anet at least improved the matchup system in Season 2. The final point positions cannot be truly representative of a servers power (coverage) in relation to every other server in the league unless all servers face each other the same amount. This is very much a basic principle of any league system.

While there were a few good points about this season, mostly facing the higher quality havoc groups on the smaller servers particularly Emery Bay( Baltimore Style and others) and NSP, too often the fights ended with our server zerging down these groups and our group hitting empty camps undefended towers assuming they haven’t been taken already.

The quality of the fights were much higher. The quantity was at an unacceptable level due to our ridiculous population advantage. Until the population issue is fixed, the leagues should not happen at all.

League: Silver
Enjoyed Season 1: Yes
Should we have season 2?: Yes, but with some changes

Season 1 was great for YB, as it motivated people who wouldn’t otherwise have touched WvW to join and help out. We surprised everyone by beating SBI last week, which made an overall second place finish a likely possibility, and I know that if league play hadn’t been a factor, we’d probably have buckled underneath SBI’s population instead of persevering through their Monday morning push and eventually winning.

That said, I think the next league should be involve four leagues:
Platinum – BG, JQ, SoR
Gold: TC, SoS, Mag, FA, SBI, YB
Silver: DB, BP, EB, CD, and two of NSP, IoJ, HoD depending on their rating post-season 1
Bronze: Everyone not listed above

This would probably lead to a more balanced experience for all parties involved. Sure, Gold might have a hard time of it, but two servers could always team up to give TC a run for their money (like it or not, this is why there are three servers in every WvW matchup). Everyone else is relatively close in coverage, or close enough so as to prevent the kind of obscene blowouts that destroy morale and stop people from playing matchups.

Announcing how to create the leagues in advance was a problem (eyes Desolation), as is the current fixation on offensive tasks – both in achievements & abilities.
If they find a way of prohibiting sudden “ladder drops” to a lower league, it would be better. I also hope that they find a way to change the reward system for defensive tasks (dolly protection) and reduce the effectiveness of zergs (there are some very good ideas on this forum).

I think the season had two phases for AG: The first phase was dominated by chaos (how to integrate the new PvE achievement hunters) and to organize things better (including off-hour coverage). This brought the community together.
In the second phase, commanders & WvW centric guilds started to burn out and the sense of helping out each other eroded quickly. Sadly, I think we have returned to the starting point again, when in comes to open up the WvW community to the more casual people from PvE & LS experience.

When do I want a second season?

Same time next year! Anet flooded us with both the Season 1 and LS stuff. Players with a “completist” mind set need a break and return to just a few weeks of nothing special except gathering mats & leveling an alt character. Really Anet. We love the content (well, not Scarlet in my case), but wrap up the LS and take it slow with Wintersday.

Leagues are too large to have competitive match-ups. There is too big a gulf between #1 and #6 in Gold for #6 to be much but a chew toy, and the gap between #1 and #9 in Silver and Bronze is much larger. With the victor of each week’s matchup predetermined by (active WvW) population in 80+% of the matchups, anything that would make WvW meaningful leaves those in favor of PvDoor and the sort of isolated skirmishes (while hiding from zergs) that would be better served by sPvP.

Should we have season 2?: After a LOT of work

Unlike many respondents in this thread I remember the awful matchups before the league, where we were demolished by the #3 and #2 servers in successive weeks (we’re around #15). So the old system is a huge no-no for me. Leagues are the way to go, but need a LOT of work. Are you reading this, Arenanet? a LOT of work.

Also;

• We were blue for 6/7 weeks.
• We faced one of the top servers in every matchup – meaning that one of the best aspects of leagues (reduced range of servers you will face) was wasted, we never experienced it.

Things we need:

1. Fix for nightcapping issue
2. Fix for blobbing issue – incentivise smaller groups – (not like bloodlust, that was a huge “how not to do it”)
3. Fix for WXP ability & Ascended powercreep (toughen walls/doors – why does Watergate inner on Garrison never upgrade? Where are the T3 doors?)
4. Something for the lower servers in a league. Why play when you will come near the bottom? I personally believe that the lower a team comes, the better it’s reward should be.

Had some downsides but im sure just from reading threads anet can figure out what they are.

Pros

1. The diversity of fights was phenomenal.
2. Every week was a challenge, even if the server in first was decided by the weekend, unlike pre-league, ppl didnt give up because the 3 points for 2nd place was still a valuable commodity to the league positions overall.
3. Brought a new wave of players who have never entered WvW pre-league but really enjoyed the experience and are here to stay. (regardless of them contributing to queues, the queue problem is being addressed)
4. From fighting the variety of servers this league it puts servers in a more steady position in the ladder of who stands where, to make it easier for what ever direction anet choose to go next.
5. WvW getting some much needed loving in regards to a reward system.
6. Not getting stuck in same match-up with same opposing 2 servers for weeks on end.

Cons

1. Queues, queues, queues. (although this as we all know is being addressed)
2. Coverage between the top servers in your league compared to lower servers in your league.
3. I was glad to see WvW getting some much needed loving with achievements and possible rewards, however it did affect the WvW population in a negative way, like people not bothering with the tougher matches and come back to finish their achievements on an easier week.

I think the league should only last as long as it needs to in order for everyone in your league to play each other at least once (not too good with maths), otherwise Diamond league could get very boring for them. This would make matches slightly fairer than they were in season 1 (not doing my own server any benefit though).

Perhaps to put a sort of fix on the coverage issue don’t have matches last a week (for league only), perhaps 2-3 days per match that way people can afford to combat them heavy coverage server in their league without burning them selves out, (regardless of coverage in a server, reset night/1st day never too much of a gap in PPT). This means that ur server that would normally end up burning out mid week and losing because of coverage now has the chance of anything can happen. This along with your fixes for the queues with introduction of new map, could make a seasoned league a little more appealing to those that didn’t enjoy 1st season.

Winner of league moves up, loser of league moves down. Run 3 seasons 1 after another (since the matches are now shorter), then a break back to normal play for a few months until next season starts again. This would combat the bandwagoners that only swapped for the 1st place prize in league since more people would have the chance to get a prize, within the 3 seaons there will be a few servers moving up (after getting a prize) and down after losing (to having a better chance in getting a prize in next match up). This would also put into the minds of people “yeh we will win a prize when we come first” but then have to face a season of people doing to us what we done to the people in the league we just won.

Viz and SFR are really only equipped to fight with each other. Any other third server in that matchup, including Piken, just winds up being a witness. The gold league wasn’t that bad, except for knowing from the get-go who would win it. The fights were good, the matchups challenging, and all the servers in the gold league gave a good fight — with a few nail biters too.

I think if SFR and Viz had to face off against each other more (they only saw each other at start and end of leagues), it might help a bit.
