Is it just me, or is the Siege Golem massively overpriced. For that price (1 gold for anyone who doesn’t know) you could have so much more of other siege items.

16 rams with leftover silver
16 arrow carts with leftover silver
10 ballista’s
8 catapults with leftover silver
4 trebs with leftover silver

If I remember the prices right. Or any combination of the above. The Golem simply doesn’t do enough damage to justify being worth that many other siege items. I understand it is mobile, but a well placed treb can hit more than one target, have the safety of range and costs a fortune less. Anyone else have similar sentiments on this?

Not saying they’re useless, just highly cost ineffective.

Massively overpriced? So i am guessing you want a 50% Cut? Hey why not then my guild can put 16 alphas on the field and 8 omegas everyday. As well as every other powerful guild.

That sounds AWESOME for the people we fight against.

I don’t care how much they cost, since I would never buy one anyway. They do cost way too much supply though, it’s a waste. In all the weeks since release, I usually haven’t seen more than 2 golems being used at once in the mid-tier server fights, and even then they were unnecessary. Well, one time we did put out 8 golems at the end of a match just for the fun of it, and they all got slaughtered anyway without making a dent in the keep door. Way too slow, and way too weak, I could understand a 1g price if you could repair them with supply, but as it is now, they are purely for overkill display. Other siege can do the same, cheaper and better.

They are horrendously overpriced for what I see them do and how easily they fall to one or two human players if you catch them trying to go from one place to another.

They are more of a novelty item for a youtube vid to say haha we wasted gold on these and THEN we actually killed you with them. It’s almost like a big joke. For what they do they should be around 35-50 silver.

Also, to the guy that said you would see them more often, they are a siege unit and part of the game, you are supposed to be seeing them somewhat often.

I have one but I don’t ever think I will use it (map completion) I don’t see a valid reason to even use one really.

I think they are fairly priced. Why? Well as mentioned. They are mobile, after taking an objective they can be ‘stored’ in a safe location (transported quickly with 2 mesmers) and used again.

Golems are premade rams. They’re extremely effective. They are awful in the field and generally against infantry. We use them all the time on Yak’s when we need to assault a fully fortified keep. You get around the mobility issue with mesmer portals. They are not overpriced either in gold or supply because of their ability to eliminate doors quickly. Otherwise, this game would become golem armies portaling around all day. The high cost ensures that they are used only in extreme situations and cannot be rapidly built.

Ive seen a three golem with 10-15 people beside them army die to one arrow cart and one catapult behind the door before they broke the keeps door (only 3-5 people were defending the keep), among many other golem failures.

Their usefulness to cost ratio is unworldly.

R E F L H E X, if they only had an arrow cart and catapault, it wouldn’t have been worthwhile to use golems in the first place. You could have had people aoeing the walls and rotating on rams and supply run for 16 rams for the same price.

Golems are fine in what they do, but I’d like to see their utility skills improved.

Alpha golem:
- Deflect field seems to be broken or not working all the time.
- The pull ability has a too long cast time and too short range. Should be 1500 range so you can pull people off walls with it.

Omega golem:
- Same issues with deflect as Alpha golem.
- Flamethrower AOE seems extremely short in range compared to the animation.
- Missile barrage is kinda ‘meh’. Big charge up animation and what happens? 4 small rockets fall on the ground next to the golem. Could do with a change on the ‘coolness’ factor.

But both their primary attacks are very strong and should not be changed for the obvious balance issues.

If you do WvWvW then you must have Badges, use them to buy Siege not that expensive TBH ;/ . all i do is WvW, the maximum amount of gold i have seen on my Account is 6g ( yes that’s true unfortunately) , but still i have like 10 golems stocked up ATM.

Well I was sitting on a decent amount of gold not too long ago with no incentive to make more money, I did however blow 15 gold for no reason knowing I would get nothing in return just to see why people were complaining about the black lion chests in halloween (the gem prices went up I did 12 chests).

With that being said I have gold right now and can make one gold per item for the most part that sells fast.

Seeing how I can literally mass produce one gold per item that sells somewhat fast, I still think golems are terrible for what they cost and would never buy one, and I probably won’t even use one that I got for free since they are so terrible.

Blowing 15 gold for no reason and no return on anything but a few mining picks from bl chests > 15 golems. Just saying.

I think one requires more common sense, to look at how bad these things are more than anything. Superior flame rams, superior arrow carts, these are the two things that work very well in this game, and much more worth your money than a crappy golem. If your team is organized and ready to build throwing up flame rams is very fast.

Sounds like your opponents were outmanned, and weren’t defending with a single person the entire time. Which is possibly the best time to use golems because that’s when they will work. Needless to say, you could’ve used arrow carts (that don’t even deal damage to walls) to take down the walls in that situation or ballistas but you went with golems. This is kind of that novelty joke I’m talking about.

While it was pretty late at night, we did infact have some battles. We relied on unpredictable movements, mesmer portals for travel, and using way points to leave spicy conditions. The golems were used for extremely fast gate removal (20-40 seconds depending on quality of the gate). It was not an uncontested situation.

Golem + Mesmers = Fast, sneak attacks.

A bunch of golems being ported and time warped means walls go down super fast before there’s a lot of time to react. Much faster than dropping rams. Plus, you don’t have to worry about supply after you conquer a place since the supply has already been paid. If you think there’s no situation where golems are the ideal choice, you haven’t thought about it enough or actually seen it in action.

Another thing to consider is not just financial cost but supply cost. All of those things you could buy also require a lot more supply than one golem. Plus, for assaulting with rams and cats, they require supply at the time of the assault. Golems only require it at the time of creation, which doesn’t have to happen during the assault.

Golems really don’t do too much. Even if you had every person in a golem, it wouldn’t be much better than if you just had them playing regularly.

Best case scenerio, you 4 man stealth the outer door and then zerg the inner door with traditional siege.

Golems are incredibly effective in 2 situations

1. surprise attacks
2. critical mass

In situation 1 you have 10 people who can take out a tower long before any defenders get there unless they’re already nearby. A single golem works faster than the rams will, especially if you time warp it (as ram auto attack cooldown prohibits it from being as effective as spin to win or punch spam)
Something similar can occur even with large groups. Taking a tower gave our zerg an extra 150 supply, which I got them to use on a golem. We breached 2 fortified gates before the enemy team could react and reach their keep which they assumed we wouldnt go for (because who just slams their face into a keep when there are 2 nearby enemy supply camps)

Golem + element of surprise > most other conventional siege

The other situation is critical mass. Which involves having enough golems to take down a gate even if defenders are there.
Golems, being mobile, can be mesmer portaled. This means with enough golems, and a brave enough mesmer, you can move 1000’s of supply worth of siege onto a gate from a safe distance. No need to throw a ram down on a gate and hope it isnt blown up before you can use it. No need to throw down cata’s and hope there isnt a suicidal enemy who is ready to destroy them. You portal, and you down the gate in seconds through the enemy teams AOE.

This tactic doesnt work with other siege weapons, just golems. 10 golems will crush a fortified gate in a matter of seconds. Unless the enemy team is prepared, and has their defensive siege ready as soon as you portal, then the gate is doomed.

Both of these strategies are incredibly powerful if done correctly. Golems are not for single players or small groups to use without co-ordination. You dont slap down a golem and automatically get the strength of 10 rams. You use it intelligently though, and you can win in scenario’s that 100 rams and 100 catapults wouldnt see you through.

Let’s not even mention if there happened to be a pot of oil someone runs up to while there is golems trying to do their little surprise.

What you are saying isn’t worth one gold each. You can surprise attack just fine with rams. They are way too weak defensively given that there will always be defensive siege being used if the server isn’t completely outmanned and left the map.

When I was on tarnished coast we’d drop 3-5 rams at a door and they went up just as fast as you could get the portal in for the golems for the most part.

There was an epic fail golem story posted not too long ago i think it was 14 golems one gate, 1 pot of oil, all dead.

We took a fortified keep & a fortified tower (both fully upgraded) from VS yesterday. Using 7 alphas and 2 omegas. Nothing they could do to stop it even though there was defenders there. They even saw the golems beforehand because they scouted the road we portaled them over. Still nothing they could do about it. All gates went down in seconds, keep lords died in even fewer seconds, control pad was kept clear with spining golems. Done. Worth the money!

In my experience, golem rushes only work when you are outnumbering the opposition anyway, so 1 gold per golem sounds fair enough. Don’t want to make it too cheap to brutalize an already weak opponent.

Properly used you can take a defended keep in ~2 minutes with golems or less than a minute without defenders.
