I currently play on Sanctum of Rall, which has a lot of zerg vs zerg action from what I have seen. In fact, it’s pretty much all I have seen since the introduction of commander icons. (I REALLY HATE those things!!!)

Is there a server that has a sociable, friendly WvW community, where people are actually using /map chat for friendly convos and relaying of info (no barking out orders!), and where small group action is the norm?

I was on Ferguson’s Crossing last night and was surprised at how nice people were, although eventually a commander popped on and started barking out orders. /sigh There was zerging going on, but overall the vast majority of the players were very polite and sociable.

Is there a server that has that AND mostly small group action, or am I asking for too much?

I did a one week vacation to Ferg’s Crossing just two weeks ago to see what the fighting was like in that tier and had a blast with all the small group action. I was going to suggest them….but I guess I’m a little late on that one. There were a few commanders, but I thought they were all nice people.

It sounds like what you’re looking for is a guild, not a server.

Find a guild that prefers this kind of teamwork and I imagine you’ll have much better luck.

As far as servers go, I would try Tier 4.

Every server has zergs, barking commanders, and small groups. What you need to find is a small guild who only roams or does ninja operations.

Sorry, but what is wrong with commanders giving orders? Isn’t that the entire point of them being a commander? I never follow commanders, but that just seems like a rather silly thing to complain about.

Every server has zergs, barking commanders, and small groups. What you need to find is a small guild who only roams or does ninja operations.

Not to be self-serving, but I will be, our guild is breaking into smaller groups to be more efficient. We have a few others guilds on our server that do the same. We’re on FA though, so that may be too high a population for you and we have quite a few commanders. However, most orders are relayed over TS (server TS and guild TS). How does spending 100g on a pretty icon mean one is qualified to bark out orders? It doesn’t.

You might like zerg action, but when I sign on and just see people blindly following a character with an icon over his head, all I can do is sigh.

And, of course, try to find a server with better action.

It doesn’t that is why it is up to the person to decide whether the commander is worth following. Most people only get the tome if they want to be a leader in WvW.

If they are a bad leader they wasted thier money because no one will follow them. At least that is how it works on my server.

Not sure what impression you’ve gotten from fighting TC this week, but our map chat is usually always pleasant, often plain goofy, and we have small groups that go out daily and get up to mischief.

On TC /m chat is for your everyday talks. /t is where people bark out commands. It’s unavoidable but it’s pretty acceptable in our map to ignore the commands as long as you’re doing something useful. A lot of the camp cap, monsters cap, scouting, and defense repair/setup are done by individuals doing their own thing.

Yeah I very rarely see anyone bark anything …. Most times it’s just requests for help.

I know it almost seems counter-intuitive to think that a T1 server is anything BUT zurg on zurg action, but I can assure you, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Since I’ve started playing JQ in beta, I’ve watched one of the most phenomenal gaming communities I’ve ever seen form. One of the concepts our server is most passionate about is the idea that every player, regardless of experience, class, or “rank” could come up with the idea that revolutionizes gameplay. And in all honesty, some of our most impressive tactics and strategies have come from people many would consider “pugs.”

We do have large groups moving but I would rarely call it a “zurg” and without fail, there are almost always 1-3 small groups running around and helping in their own way.

I’m currently putting together a program to help train up these sort of small groups to be as effective as possible and know multiple other guilds have people who love this playstyle. The vast majority of our server is incredibly friendly and helpful (there’s an occasional troll but you’ll find these anywhere) and we would LOVE to have any of you who are interested.

I don’t think T4 qualifies as small group action. Sure, small groups can find something to do in any tier, but as a sweeping generalization lower tiers have more small group stuff happening.

I’m on Sanctum of Rall and 90% of my time is spent in a small group doing interception and fast assault or blocking. Nothing forces you to join a zerg or follow commanders, find like-minded players and roll with them. Just last night we ninja’d a keep with 4 players while two zergs were busy duking it out over Stonemist. We regularly run into PiNK squads of a similar size as us too, skirmishes from anywhere between 3vX to 7vX are very common in my experience.

I’m a commander on FC in a small man guild that’s been here forever. If you had too, you’d realize the need for commanders. After all the major guilds left in about the first month, the server was literally dead. NP came and is the reason I have the tag now. Only started donning it to get morale up and help keep our map the right color against Devona’s Rest, if you know anything about that situation. It worked and we’ve had increasing numbers of pve converts ever since. Trust me, I don’t want to be having to command any more than you do (small man skirmishing is a million times more fun, if you can call commanding fun at all, with all the frustration it brings), but the fact is WvW isn’t fun for a lot of people when you can’t hold anything, which seems to be the case whenever the job is left up to randoms. Just trying to stay out of dead last.
