So I defended and did probably 300k damage.
Yeah, Anet has to do a lot of work to properly credit players. Mesmer reflection damage does not count for damage done by the mesmer, even though it counts against the mesmer if those players have retribution.
Healing doesn’t count or buffing doesn’t count either. Only damage done directly by you through button press appears to give any credit at all.
I’m with you. I used a staff/scepter+dagger build and used epidemic as the cornerstone of my wvw rotation. I’m able to keep up amazing AOE pressure, but what I can’t do is finish them off, but that is ok. It’s not about the kills it’s about holding/pushing the lines. The contribution system needs a bit of an overhaul in general, but necros and condition spammers need some love in the long run.
There also needs to be an adjustment to DMG vs objects as they are immune to conditions. It could take me all day to take down a piece of siege when a direct damage dealer could have it down in well under half the time.

I disagree, if you want to do damage to an object, just swap weapons. It’s really that simple.
You are right that does work, but it’s a work around. If you are running a full condition based build and you get caught in combat with a weapon you aren’t traited or geared to run then you are at a severe disadvantage. We should not be penalized vs objects or in regards to contribution for running a condition heavy build.
The best way to ensure credit is to do a repair on a wall or gate. Then you don’t need to worry about how damage is calculated.
Defense XP:
Enemy MUST damage a wall or gate.
You MUST contribute to the kill of an enemy OR you must repair a wall or gate.
Most people miss that first one. They are defending the place so well that the enemy has no chance to damage a wall or gate, so there is no reward for defense.
Basically you aren’t rewarded for the “easy defense”, where you have pushed the enemy back and kept the structure away from harm. You are rewarded for the “hard defense”, where the enemy is actually doing damage and you are just holding on.
Best XP I ever got was, I think, level 62 – 67 in one sitting as two teams were attacking our last keep in Eternal Battlegrounds. We held them off for a few hours of nonstop “Invaders repelled” rewards.
A game that’s 100% WvW

You can also repair walls and gates for exp.
Honestly it can get a little exploited. If your server owns SMC, hang around inside, usually someone will build a treb in their garrison to shoot one of your outer walls.
As soon as the treb hits the wall, everyone inside gets the repel the attackers event. Then you can grab supply and repair the wall, doing this as long as the treb is shelling it for free exp/money/karma.
Certain times you could spend upwards of 1hour+ getting free gold medals with practically no danger.
