Been playing WvW since release (7 months) and I’m really wondering about the heralded “WvW update” on March 26…is that it?

If so, wow, disappointing. 7 months to fix a bug and introduce a rank system? I mean, I’m grateful culling is fixed and a rank system is kinda ok I guess but where are the shiny toys? the exploit bug fixes? The new content?

Please tell me more is coming in the next month, especially attention to the ridiculous ranking system that we’re using and the crazy imbalances in all Tiers.

This update has fallen so far short of expectation.

The fact is Anet is working on it – WvW is interesting with the new ranking – and the culling fix was a MAJOR fix. More / different siege , more / different maps , and bug fixes are going to be done eventually. With the rank system we effectively get a whole new seige experience – thats 1 thing which was addressed in this last update.

the update added some new siege weapon skills that you could use, it also increased damage by siege weapons and decreased damage from siege weapons . I, for 1 , find that update to be great , especially with the fact that we can carry more supply with us , it is a great advantage to our server , (northern shiverpeaks),and the extra supply helps us take over keeps and SM because of the fact we don’t have to resupply as often.

The WvW update was disappointing yes and did not meet many people’s high expectations.

Yes, the rank system was a good improvement and yes people are happy to have culling removed.

But there are some key things that were left out that would have made the update more satisfying.

1) Addition of Ascended gear to WvW
2) New maps or new structures/events/objectives in existing maps

Unfortunately, this.

WvW isn’t as big a part of the game as PvE. We may think theres a large group of people who are hardcore WvWers but that population is tiny compared to the PvE pop. Therefore their focus isn’t here, it’ll be to what will make them the most money.

I’m not super disappointed by the patch personally, a patch is better than no patch at all, but I would like to see: Skill Lag fixed; Better incentives(there is no real point to upgrading things other than making it harder to take), and better uses for badges. If those three things ever happen i’ll be as happy as can be for WvW.

I mean I think it’s pretty clear that neither Arena Net nor these forums care about EU WvW, or even realize it exists.

That’s why you see people complaining about T8 calling it “the worst tier” and kitten like that, not realizing what is going on in T9 on EU, and also why they opened transfer to a #1 server.

I still don’t understand how they could break Hidden Killer.

Maybe that was intentional to kitten on all the solo thieves running around trolling people.
Can’t count how many times a thief failed to kill my Engi and they keep coming back and phasing in and out of stealth just to play with my emotions. shakes fist at thief community
I think WvW is in a good place but I play all aspects of the game with the time I allot for gw2. [Maybe not such a good spot for someone who only plays WvW.] To me culling fix alone is huge. Next I’d like to see them upgrade their hardware\connection so we don’t lag to kitten on the weekends.

The new update was useless. They still haven’t done anything with the orbs they took out 6 months ago, they removed culling but now there is skill lag as soon as 50 people stand close to each other. The rank system is a joke. 300 rank points to get +5 supply increase? I was expecting addition of new skins, ascended gear and new maps but no, we get some useless talent points. 5% dmg reduction from siege is pointless. So now instead of an arrow cart hitting me for 2k dmg it hits me for 1.9k OMG WHAT AN AWESOME TALENT. The developers are too lazy to even add real achivements. They instead decide to add achievements which will take 5 years for the average player to obtain and most people gave up on them already. I know only 1 person who is close to getting the 250k kills required to get achievement and that is the RG leader. So many people play WvW and they haven’t been kind on us at all. 3 identical maps that look the same, 7 months in to the game, still no promised content update. I wonder how many more months we will have to wait to get ascend gear in wvw or even a new looking map.

Spec into balista… its really not that hard to realize that some traits are bad while others are good. The fact that you’re obsessing over one that’s terrible while simultaneously ignoring how powerful the masteries are along with +5 siege (and arguably the +5% for wall/door based siege)… makes me think that you just wanted to rage and couldn’t find much of a talking point on this particular subject.

It’s interesting that these days a few percentage points are considered trivial and/or inconsequential… when for the last few months, we couldn’t go a day without a new thread whining about how players with ascended gear would be totally OP compared to the poor exotic-only folks.

So to recap:
when talking about ascended gear, 4-5% extra damage => game breaking.
when talking about WvW rank abilities, 4-5% extra damage => useless.

I would’ve like to have seen more for sure. I think its hard to think of the end of culling as a “feature.” Its like touting the end of crashes and disconnections as a “feature.” Not adding new skins to wvw to me was the real downer. If they had done nothing but added true wvw only skins I think most people would’ve been content.

I agree with the OP, I was expecting more. IMO the wasted space, particularly in borderlands, should be a top priority. But that hope was shot down a few days before the update when one of the staff said that there would not be map updates for a long time.

I was also hoping that the scoring would be tweaked. There should be instant points awarded for objectives to make it feel like your efforts mean something. It would also give smaller worlds a chance to bridge the points gap against superior numbers by having roamers earn points even if they can’t take towers.

I was also hoping for the low level mats to be removed. Why on earth are they even there, everyone is scaled to 80? Should only be level 80 mats, particularly food. I don’t want to play PvE to have to WvW.

They’d make more money off of skins and shinnies than off of boosters. Not really much need to monetize WvW (specifically) much as how there is little need to monetize PvP (and hence the disappearance of tickets); PvPers tend to be less spend-y anyway. The custom arenas will likely be monetized for upkeep since you’re going to literally be renting server space to play however you want but the question there will be price to rent.

Negative. Yaks, the more ppl are killing it, the more points they give you, up to a limit which i don’t know which it is.

So that’s not encouraging small groups to kill yaks. It’s an objetive that can be taken by small groups, but game mechanics don’t encourage it.

So that’s not encouraging small groups to kill yaks. It’s an objetive that can be taken by small groups, but game mechanics don’t encourage it.

The limit is ten to fifteen and that amount is further scaled by how far along its route the yak is (and yak’s that have no destination award 0). Ten to fifteen is a small to decent sized group.

The mechanics are not exactly clear but the next time you roll over a yak, watch the points. They’ll only ever increment upward by a max of 15. Solo kill a yak at near the end of its route and see how many points are awarded. This happens in real-time on the scoreboard so its not hard to watch and track.

There was a reddit post about this a month or two ago and we (as a server and just players) looked into it a good bit. The conclusion then was that by the end of its route, three taggers could maximize at 15 points on a yak if its killed just outside of its arrival point. This may not be perfectly true but it did seem to have some validity to it through some play-testing.

I’ll do some checking tonight when I’m off from work and let you know how it goes. I’ll even get ten people to slap some yaks just to watch the ticks.

OK so – I’ll agree that other than adding the rank system and fixing the culling there are still alot of things we want from WvW – including additional buildings / architecture to siege from – think destructible buildings which we can use supply to repair but is a neutral controlled asset.

But for the Ascended equipment – there was always laurels – it just takes forever to get them. If you say “but oh PvE fractalers get ascended equipment faster” take my experience – did 26 runs on f10 with no ascended rings dropping – yes I got mine AFTER using pristines but that’s almost a full month of work. I’m not saying that ascended equipment shouldn’t be gotten if you do WvW only – There SHOULD be more options like using a gift of battle + gold to buy an ascended item.

Just to summarize – make destructible neutral buildings for us to siege from, add more ways to get ascended equipment via badges <- they are probably working on both.

We will get more, so the fact WvW is getting attention, and in the interview, Colin noted WvW will get attention all year, as will PvP. Ladder incoming, lots of items that will be refined as a solid base of what we need. I want armor skins too, but think, shinies are not as important as mechanics and easier to throw in later. Mechanics need the attention, and then when they are ready, can be on a more equal playing field and get some ‘shinies’.

Would love to have equal footing with the other game aspects, but mechanics are most important imho, and happy to have ‘some’ attention. Ascended gear needs to be addressed.

Guild wars 2 was made with Esports and PvP as its mainpoints. Then something happened (management made ascended gear happen/whatever) and now all they focus on is making content to make money.

I for one am pretty excited about the culling fix. To me it feels like a whole new game because of how much more responsive and how much faster it feels; it only made the game better. I’m fine for sitting tight and looking forward to whatever they intend to release down the line in terms of content and game mechanics.

That’s not happening. The FPS is due to the rendering your computer is going to crunch more than their servers.

The skill lag, well, probably isn’t going to be a fixable matter. Not until you get instantaneous communication between two points miles on miles on miles apart.

Quite true, and not contradictory to what I said either Until the communication of that data (which is a whole lot more complex a problem than than VoIP) is instant? You will still see it. And due to limitations of physics, you can only get so close to that goal. So . . .

They can sink a lot of money into better servers and try to buff their connections. Get a three-way matchup in Stonemist? Skill lag and FPS drop is going to happen.

May I remind people that GW2 has been out for 7 months, still has a very active and large community, and has only 1 Elder Dragon available and has only introduced 1 extra map. This game has a long ways to go, and WvW still has a lot that can change within.

The problem is that ArenaNet has a finite amount of time to produce updates before people move on. They can promise adding 2 more elder dragons but if that takes 3 years and people are bored in the meantime, they will move on. After 7 months the WvW players needed something new monotony out of WvW and there simply wasn’t anything like that in this patch. Sure they added ranks but it’s still the same old zergfest against objectives that fall in minutes and don’t really matter.

Why do you think people keep mentioning Elderscrolls online? That’s the deadline for ArenaNet to fix WvW and give it some depth. ESO is promising a WvW experience as well. The major problem is that ArenaNet needs to produce a ton of new WvW content or alter old WvW content to create a new experience in order to compete with ESO because it’s a whole new game, a whole new PvP experience, a whole new combat experience, etc. Given ArenaNet’s current track record that is simply not going to happen. ArenaNet is not doing well in class balance and their content additions are weak, as evidenced by the new WvW rank system. Unless ArenaNet does some major class, WvW, and combat overhauls or additions then people are going to move to ESO.

Just thought i would point out that they didnt ‘fix’ culling. They simply turned it off and put the culling options client side. They went around the problem, they didnt fix it(the problem being performance). Culling was there to stop performance getting any worse. They couldnt fix the performance so they turned culling off and acted like it was their fix and can now say that any performance issues r client side becouse ur settings r to high.

If u have culling off completly ur FPS will tank, but its ur choice ..so Anet can wash their hands of the crappy performance issues. They just say “change culling options to increase ur performance”., which brings u back to how things were b4 the patch lol.

Just thought i would point out that they didnt ‘fix’ culling. They simply turned it off and put the culling options client side. They went around the problem, they didnt fix it(the problem being performance). Culling was there to stop performance getting any worse. They couldnt fix the performance so they turned culling off and acted like it was their fix and can now say that any performance issues r client side becouse ur settings r to high.

If u have culling off completly ur FPS will tank, but its ur choice ..so Anet can wash their hands of the crappy performance issues. They just say “change culling options to increase ur performance”., which brings u back to how things were b4 the patch lol.

You have no idea what performance optimisations they made under the hood to make it possible to disable culling, you really think it would have taken them so long if all the needed to do was to flip a switch? Not to mention that culling was not only to do with client-side performance, it’s also a matter of bandwidth-usage (as a result of the n-squared problem).

If you have a slow computer there are settings to reduce the number and detail of visible players and you should use them. Clearly they have done performance optimisations as my FPS certainly hasn’t tanked since the update, I can now see entire battles with no less FPS than before, though admittedly I have a pretty good computer. You can’t honestly expect them to be able to get massive 100+ person fights to run perfectly on anyone’s crappy old computer though, they’re not miracle-workers.

- I’d just be happy if they enhanced the grouping systems so we have a choice to be in something other than a 5 man or commander/zerg system. More multiple UI grouping support for medium sized forces.

- Be able to right click on a player name in chat or guild and do more than simply have “report” as an option. Basic things like “invite to group” or “whisper”… manually typing out invites sucks. I don’t understand why we don’t have the same right click options as in PvE areas.

no, apparently you do not.

I get your point. You are showing off how leaving out some vital information can be used to skew an argument in your favor.

So to recap:
when talking about ascended gear, 4-5% extra damage against everything, players NPCs, walls. Aswell as 5% more health, armor, etc that also works in PvE and is bind on acount => game breaking.
when talking about WvW rank abilities, 4-5% extra damage against just NPCs, or against/with very specific siege engines and restricted entirely to WvW content on 1 character only => useless.

Went ahead and fixed that for you to more accurately reflect the facts. And then YES, bloody hell, YES. I dont think anyone would choose getting traits over getting ascended gear. If just for the simple fact i can use my Asc. Gear in PvE aswell, and Asc. Gear is BoA, i can gear an alt.
Havent even touched on the fact they didnt bother to introduce any cool, unique, WvW gear(or even allow access to existing). But in the same patch introduced new skins for Guild. And not a week later, came out with new skins with the Super Adventure Box along with the entire dungeon.
They put a ton more effort in content that is only going to be available for a limited amount of time, then they did in one of the core features.

WvW has a pretty low priority, so low that even adding a few more skins to an NPC was to much work. So low that having their art team, which has nothing to do with work on culling(!), to draft up some cool new gear designs.
And these are just the very simple things, what hope is there for any actually big game changers? Or heavens forbid, some more content?

Its abundantly clear, ANet caters to PvE and in lesser extent to sPvP. And if you’re into that stuff, they really do a good job for you. But if you’re in it for the WvW, don’t get your hopes up. What you see is what you get, and thats all you get.

Just logged on after taking a few months off GW2, and yeah the much heralded WvW updates are pretty disappointing. The culling fix is really good, but other than that the WvW ranks really don’t add anything to the game. Hopefully when I check back in another 6 months they’ll be adding things like more interesting structure upgrades, more contestable nodes, and more active NPC’s to keep the action going, which are what a real WvW overhaul needs.

Remember a important thing we are talking about Anet they are bad at fixing thing. And remember they sell us a uncomplet game. The game wans’r rdy when they launch it. Its not event rdy now. And u are expecting something else from them? just leave the game fro 1 year don’t play anymore then come back. In 1 year u will be able to see the real game and not the crap we play today

They need to add stuff to the Black Lion Trading thingie that has WvW requirements so WvWers will buy them.

Anet makes its money from purchases through black trading thing so until they figure out how to monetize WvW better WvW will be understaffed and low priority.

There are a lot of players who engage in WvW which is great but that doesn’t pay the bills since the Trading post doesn’t cater to WvW very well.

I think that there should be a kit to allow the enemy to see your title. This could be sold for X gems. Maybe some sort of kit that allows the enemy to see your gear in its proper colour (and outlines the player in team coded glow instead?).

I don’t like the idea of consumables for WvW but… perhaps WvW Chests that can be opened via WvW Keys that contain WvW-centric items.

Keys seem to be a fairly significant income generator.

Anyway, until Anet comes up with some ideas on how to monetize WvW without destroying WvW don’t expect any serious updates. The fear is that if they try to fully monetize WvW then they will make it pay to win and, therefore, destroy the whole experience.
