Stability Needed for Stomp
For those reading this thread, It’s a trap!
you can also use blind if you time it right. Imo, it’s a good mechanic. It means just that someone is downed doesn’t mean he’s dead, and he can still support his teammates. Knowing when to stomp and when to go for this other mates is key.
But when the game design dictates you must trait a certain way just to do something fundamental like kill someome when you’ve got them down, then that is a problem.
- Stomping isn’t the only way of getting the kill.
- Stability isn’t the only way to get a stomp
- Knockdown/Knockback/Fear isn’t the only counter to stomping.
Eles, Thieves, Mesmers get a skill to move away from your stomp and no amount of stability is going to help you there. Guardians, Warriors, Necros,Engis have Knockback/Knockdown/Fear which you can counter with stability, invulnerability, block, blind and in the case of warriors and necros stealth.
If you just blindly go for the first stomp you see, you deserve to miss it and waste some time. The stomp is just there to speed up the process of killing a downed player but is in no way the only way of doing it. You will have to go for multiple stomps against certain classes that’s just an aspect of the game.
Yeah, finishing someone isn’t free. What’s the problem again?
You know that you can finish a downed player without stomping right?
Playing both a guardian and a necromancer gives you insight into how unbalanced the downed state system is.

but stomp already gives stability.

I play a condition necro. in wvw I can 1v2 a lot of people that don’t quite know what their doing, but with this downed state as it is my marks don’t effect downed foes, I lack any good way to stomp people and because of that a lot of the time I see I can only kill one of the 2 downed people while the other has time to rez himself (especially if he is a ranger). that is why I try my best to run with a thief. necro/thief make a good team, where a necro can destroy whole groups with massive aoe damage a thief can then stomp them all in stealth. we all have our roles in a fight if you want to do a little of everything try ele, that’s supposed to be the ok at everything but not great at anything class.
I’m really against what OP is saying, there are many ways to finish a person. Yes killing a player who is up takes skill, but stomping someone is a completely different aspect of the game. It takes practice and education of the class you’re fighting and rightfully so should take multiple tries to finish someone off.
You are comparing it to traditional games where you are dead when your health reaches zero. This game is and always has been combatively different. It’s just another aspect of the game you must learn to play.
Stomping someone takes preparation, timing, practice and skill. You’ll learn it eventually.

Lol, I find no problem killing players in down state at all… in fact… most times I don’t even go for the stomp since it’s safer and easier to finish someone in range… Stop fighting the mechanic and enjoy it. It’s like coming into KFC but demanding a big mac.
Black Powder.
The devs don’t care about WvW so I’m gonna kill players in PvE!
In my opinion, this is a sign of poorly designed mechanic.
It is getting very close to the point where you need stability in order to finish someone in the downed state. It doesn’t matter so much in zergs (which has it’s own set of downed state problems). It is more a factor in small group play. If anyone has CC off cooldown, you won’t get the spike.
And yes yes, I know, just trait stability. But when the game design dictates you must trait a certain way just to do something fundamental like kill someome when you’ve got them down, then that is a problem.
In a small group, stomps must be coordinated (as everything else), so you should call it when you can do it. If you don’t have stability and your ele has mist form he will perform the stomp, not you.
In a small group when you take down 1 opponent it’s better to AoE him and try to kill ressers.
Anyway, if they’ll get rid of downed state, I won’t cry for it….

I use poison grenades first, to slow the downed players heals, then when the first few come to help, freeze grenades and then grenade barrage. If I am close enough, I interrupt with supply crate to stun and add a few more ticks of burning, and continue with the rotation.
I have so many badges from this classic sniper technique.
