Arenanet, i am an avid WvW player, i like the wvw game setting on all it’s parts. I like sieging, roaming, commanding, improving my perosnal use with the wvw skills, gvg’s and so on.
Problem is, it’s becoming too hard to actually play wvw in any form lately and i will share why from my prospective as a player on Aurora Glade EU:

  • Server Matchup – this is the main problem, on AG for example we are by rank number 13/26 – exactly in the middle (according to http://mos.millenium.org/matchups ).
    So far it’s been 1 week we go against servers with double our coverage and actual numbers, and the other week we double the other servers numbers. Here and there we get something remotely close to a good matchup where fights are not a matter of not over-running or getting over-run. From mid tier perspective we have very hard but somewhat manageable matches vs very larger servers – we basically brave it through. The worst is when in mid tier we outmatch lower tier servers, they truly have such low numbers, and in demorilized state that we don’t have during the day anything to do in wvw, we own everything and are blood crazing to get some action that we end up overkilling which makes it worse.
  • Server Sizes – Server transfer was closed which was a good thing from wvw perspective, less spies and less unidirectional migration to high tiers servers. Problem is WvW servers on EU by population size (coverage in wvw) divide to 3 main groups – huge servers, mid servers and small servers. Sadly, the matchup system does very little to sense these differences and mixes way too often between the 3 creating matches that are in many ways just game breaking.
  • WvW vs PVE rewards – it’s hard to get people to play wvw when you’re make these disgustingly rewarding farmfest living story content vs wvw. It has become apparently bad since the introduction of champion loot where if you have any need for gold you are utterly stupid for not spending your time farming farming farming instead of at very least mixing content.
  • Game Mechanics – currently the best way to “win” a matchup by points, get most loot, advance in WXP basically be rewarded by the game itself (in contrast to personal pride which is individual) – is by zerging, and the more the better. Combining the keep waypoints (that are still usable every few min for few secs even when contested), camp buff timers, loot/wxp per kill, it’s most rewarding to get as many players as possible to run in one huge group and autoattack. To make it clear and simple – this is by no means a good way to conduct the game, its demeaning and creates servers lag.
    To be honest though, this is more our fault, as a community then you arenanet, as you provided the game, and we have freedom to play it one way or another.
    Despite this, you have more power then us to address this topic and shift the game.

These are, in my view the big issues that need to be addressed asap, fixing even 1 will address others drastically too, as they are heavily interconnected.
I feel like i have a very good idea :
Make server matchup elective . Crate a visible leaderboared in the wvw info panel so servers can see their current point placement vs others, as it is now. during the week each wvw player on a server will be able to cast a vote on which 3 servers he would like to meet next week by preference 1st 2nd and 3rd, and this way you can match servers that WANT to fight each other most – by giving preference to servers that picked each other. It will make the concept of waging war against a server more sensible, and help develop an actual community + drive ppl to tranfer to servers that seek similar challenges/playstyles

I found a solution to the skill lag issue I encounter in large scale fights : since I stopped to play I don’t have any longer this problem and I found out that if I come back when the issue will be fix by Anet will make my game experience better then. So for now I am working on my IRL content
For my mind sakes I avoid playing game if it has such issue…

Those are definitely some of my issues with the state of WvW. Hopefully they’ll modify it in the upcoming months to stimulate the roaming ‘class’ if you will.

I agree, on Sorrows Furnace we are always outnumbed, never get good match ups. Im thinking about transfering back to SoR where i started at during headstart.

Fully agree to both on how the problem is stated and on how to solve it.

The key phrase is “the concept of waging war”. Anet really needs to grasp this feeling more, random matchups are not even flavorful, besides all the problems you mentioned.
