Even the seemingly easiest thing can get rather massive bugs.
More often than you would imagine.

I don’t remember what it was, but there was something else that was delayed a bit from when they expected because it wasn’t quite ready. I think it came in the next patch.

We won’t be getting it next week, but I don’t think it will be long.

That sounds like a company line. My guess is they wanted to space some WvW changes out because it is easier on the bug fixing team and players won’t go as long without any significant changes.

They’re just saving it for a separate patch so it feels like WvW is getting attention.

Database has a field for wxp current, max, rank, etc. for each character with a uid linked to an account. This is pretty simple.

Thus to merge wxp between all characters, all they need to do is a “Select * From WXP_DB Where AccountID=____”, and then loop through the results and add it to a new field called “Total Account WXP” perhaps in a new db table (for cleanliness and archive the old wxp db). This can be done quickly during the downtime patch.

The next thing is to either add a new db or use the existing one to assign some new fields that tell the game which characters have used which points (basically a reworking of the current db) that also says how many points are left (updated on rank up across account or when points are spent).

The game would need a new ui to show how many total wxp ranks you have for your account (easy), and how many points are left to be spent.

The game would then have a function that updates the DB whenever a point is used, subtracting it from all characters ‘total points available’ as to reduce server->db communications when switching characters. (Sacrifice some disk space for communication bandwidth)

HOWEVER, while this is all really straight forward and would take a programmer no longer than a week to create the databases, and recode the game, all this has to go through countless meetings to approve of the new DB design and code checking, etc. (Most of the meetings will be a waste of time, but all big companies have this issue)

Now we also must consider that programmers time is split between PVE and PVP, where PVE gets most of the attention, so they probably have 1 programmer for PVP and that programmer is working on EotM.

Anet could’ve rolled out the account bound wxp months ago, when it was first announced, but that would’ve pushed EotM’s potential released back by weeks. Thus it got shelved.

Now that EotM will enter real beta testing when it goes live, that 1 programmer will have to split their time between fixing the glitches/exploits/remaining bugs in EotM, and programming the new wxp system.

Conclusion: 6-8 weeks before we see wxp account bound.

EotM must have had a LOT of man hours put into it, I would guess it’s eaten up a lot of the development time available for WvW seems it appears they are both developed by the same group. Here’s hoping months without even fixing reported exploits much less any improvement or balance or even polish in WvW will pan out here.

No, it’s a testing ground for new ideas and mechanics. The hope is that new things get introduced here first and then migrate over to the other maps if they’re successful, or presumably removed if they are not.

They may not be using a set based database for storage. They could be using something like an indexed traversal system or object based. If they are using a SET based system no need to run a loop just use an aggregate function such as SUM:

UPDATE ACCOUNT SET ACCOUNT_WXP = (SELECT SUM (WXP) FROM CHARACTER WHERE CHARACTER.ACCOUNT_ID = ACCOUNT.ACCOUNT_ID)

That is the easy part though. They still have to code the client side interface, change the server processes that update WXP and dozens of other changes.

I know this to be the official stance given to us, but how would you expect the players to consume what is in effect a new 4th play mode? It’s in direct competition with the original maps for player interest.

Either way it’s a new map competing for the already active players, for those players on less populated servers it’s just a distraction… and I hope a good one, I’d like for it to be a success.

Although I’m not convinced that it’s likely to hold the larger group of PvE players interest for any longer as the original WvW maps did because of it’s inherent PvP aspects. So some map somewhere is going to see a drop off in interest, I’d expect the design team with so much invested into EotM are hoping for it to be the more popular choice.

It’s become sort of a running joke that each updates in this game introduces a new set of bugs completely unrelated to what was updated. It’s nice if they wish to break from that trend.
Too bad a lot of us have been waiting for this change for quite a few months.

Not exactly, remember that wallet is common pool and whenever any of your characters uses gold, karma, etc it is taken from this pool. With wxp, you’ll have a sum of it from all characters, but it is going to be used independently by each of them. Also, they need to make sure that WXP you earn later on will be added to every character’s rank.

Living World…. You mean the thing Anet thinks people like but the vast majority find extremely annoying and would prefer a straight up expansion now it’s been 2 years? Frankly we need one, to bring back players. Also people keep asking endlessly for Tengu who were lifted from the game before release.

I would consider myself a serious WvW:er and I have been in a guild that was focusing only on WvW and interestingly enough the vast majority (I would even be as bold as to say all) of us had more issues with being unable to play due to queues than we had with ranks being character-bound.

The fact that you claim that everyone of us would have answer that account bound ranks should have been in game since day 1 shows your ignorance as well, seeing as the ranks themselves were not added until quite some time after release. And thus having them account bound before they were even added wouldn’t make much sense.

Loads of people have been asking since release for something to be able to play WvW while being queued.

We have quite long queues daily.

I do find it quite interesting that you seems to be able to play on every server on every match-up. That would require a rather massive amount of accounts (and also rather massive amounts of computers, seeing as most computers can’t handle more than one or two clients at the same time).

Just because WvW account-bound ranks is the most important thing in the world for you, doesn’t mean it is for everyone, or even the majority.

I never heard anyone complain about lack of Account-bound WvW ranks before the added WvW ranks (even though people did want some sort of progression system for quite some time before it was added), we have however heard complaints about queues in WvW since release of the game, long before they announced Edge of the Mists, so clearly that is a bigger issue than account-bound ranks.

As an exclusive wvw player, this was all I cared about. I am disappoint.

Well people never seemed to have an issue with ranks being characterbound when ranks and such were discussed back in the days. Which was more or less the point I was trying to make.

Queues on the other hand have always been seen as an issue, while character-bound progression have not.

Countless topic where made asking for wxp account bound, many people including myself are asking for it every now and then, every week someone make a topic asking when it will be introduced.

On the other hand after season 1 ended I havent seen that much complain about queues, not as much as account bound wxp anyway.

Yes. AFTER ranks were added.
But BEFORE ranks were added, the discussions (that lead to ranks in the first place) seemed to talk about character progression rather than account-progression.

So clearly it was not an issue with it being character bound until it was released. While queue on the other hand have been an issue since release and still is.

Being completely unable to play WvW is a much bigger issue for most players than not having some extra things on their characters after all.

Account bound Wxp is the one feature I’ve been looking forward to since wxp/ranking system was introduced.

Oh, I was always under the impression that when talking about CHARACTER PROGRESSION I were talking specifically about, you know, the progression of a character, not a progression of my whole account.
But apparently that was just me.

we wanted vertical progression for wvw (but not power creep… conflicting concepts).
we didnt realize vertical progression would come at the cost of our alts feeling worthless because of the time investment required to gain significant utility. so as soon as someone said “what if wvw ranks worked like pvp ranks instead of like the character selection screen” most people modified their opinion and really really liked that idea.
iterative process and all that…
