The rudest behavior I’ve seen in WvW is two persons bowing to start a duel, and the winning person proceeding to stomp the loser.

This behavior is bad and shouldn’t be encouraged.

Isn’t it commonly understood that a bow preceding a fight meant that it was going to be a no-stomp duel where both sides would res and continue dueling and fighting one another.
I guess many don’t share this opinion.
Why bow in the first place?
Why not just fight on sight as a normal roaming encounter would turn out?

I have seen one and it is rude. I watched the duel because both bowed. I could have helped our guy in early.

I don’t duel but I go and test solo roamers in our corner. Most probably they are good players and I know the end before I start. I don’t bow.

Complaining on a forum about being stomped in a game where the purpose is to kill the enemy and stomp them probably shouldn’t be encouraged either. Next time don’t lose and you won’t get stomped.

Maybe try dueling in OS.

Yeah you can`t impose your rules on others, no matter.

Most duellers will respect the /bow. It’s stupid to stake someone and make them run all the way back if you want to duel — you wind up standing around.

Just remember the guy and don’t extend him the same curteousy next time.

Next time you see them, let them almost res to full and poison them. Then hit them a bit so they fall back then. If you are a DH/guard you can use banish which is fun too.

Rinse and repeat. It’s pretty funny when people think you’ll actually let them live.

Toss a blueprint after you are bored.

Or, bow after you stomp them.

The plus to this is that you’ll get an angry thread about you most likely.

Yeah sure it’s bad behavior but it happens all the time. Expecting people to be reasonable out on the field in an internet game is not going to happen.

I’ve had people rez after losing a duel and keep charging after me after resetting. I’ve had people tell their friends to gank me while they’re still in downstate. I’ve been AJ’d and stomped out multiple times but it’s all okay, it’s a game.

Etiquette has been dead a long time but it’s always nice to have a good conversation after a fight- well, if your opponent is one of those respectable people!

I don’t get it. How is it rude? Duel was lost; winner took all.

If you don’t want to risk an encounter in which your opponent’s idea of etiquette differs from yours, then your options are:

  • Only duel friends
  • Negotiate the ‘rules’ ahead of time

Are they like bowing in the hope that if they lose, the winner will let them res?
And then if they win, they can just stomp and run off laughing?

The old custom was that you indicated by bowing that you wanted to duel and would not stomp your opponent should you down them.

Newer players may not be aware of the custom. Trolls and kittenes who don’t understand sportsmanship may simply ignore it.

Not stomping a downed opponent in a duel appears to be the accepted etiquette. I say “appears to be” because it is an unwritten rule. There is no reason to expect anyone to know it. No one has ever told me the rule, but I have observed enough duels in which it was followed.

I have found that players who duel expect other players to know things the other players are unlikely to know. For example, duelists seem to think that other players can tell the difference between a duel and normal combat. We can’t, especially if the duel is taking place where normal combat would be expected. One duelist on my server got very upset when several people interfered in a duel he was having on the most direct path between the nearest WP and Stonemist while a battle was raging in the Lord’s room.

Perhaps someone needs to develop a code duelo with provisions for seconds. Two opposing players standing around doing nothing while two others hack at each other would be a sign that a duel is going on. And the downed player’s second could rez him before he gets stomped or kill the offending duelist who did the stomping.

You guys seem to miss the point of this thread.
It’s not about crying that someone lost a duel. Like said above: it’s a sort of etiquette.

Now this doesn’t mean that you can expect everyone to follow it but I think it’s important to remind people of things like that every now and then, because it leads to a much more friendly environment and a kind of sub community in a gamemode that is often very stale and being “rip’ed” by people at least a thousand times.

WvW is a competitive game mode. And that is where people seem to have different opinions.
Some people think that because it’s competitive you can get through with the most kitteny behaviour just because it gives you victory.

For me a competitive environment means that people go there to be challenged. And being challenged involves trying to get as many fair encounters as possible,to fight for victory and if necessary… To learn from your mistakes.
Where is the point to go 3v1 or 60v20? You’ve come here to get a challenge, to test your skills and to improve. Not to hide like a crybaby and only fight when there is no way for you to lose anyways.

And if you live by these principles you are also respecting players who have come to this place for fights and to improve their skill and Not to enjoy the landscape for 10min because they are busy running back to you.

The concept of wvw duels is fading and decent wvw duelist are a dying breed. CLEARLY (judging by most of the posts here) we’re really only left with scummy ppters literally garbage players. Now ask yourself, should you even be bothered? I suggest you go to 1v1 Pvp arenas for duels and never initate them in wvw.

I don’t understand why people stomp either. I wouldn’t really know the feeling of getting stomped because I don’t lose 1v1s, but I have watched duels where people have stomped someone after beating them after bowing lol.

The loot bag would be nice, but generally I want to fight the person again if they want another round.

I was solo roaming once and was capping a sentry position. An enemy thief showed up and right away bowed to me. However, I pretty much never duel in wvw, and I was not in a “duel-friendly” area of the map. I charged my enemy and ended up stomping him.

I posted this vid as part of a compilation on my build on youtube and got some chitt for it in the comments, even though I never agreed to the duel and never bowed.

Every time I’ve duelled in WvW the person added me to party and asked before we started. I haven’t seen one using a bow a the only form of communication before fighting.
If that was his only form of communication, a bow that you might not even notice maybe it’s just a mark of respect before the fight.

I’ve had many dozens of duels in which the bow was the only form of communication used until one of us was done and shot the other a pm.

I don’t think there’s ever been confusion when the other person bowed back, at least in my experience. When the other person didn’t bow back, I always took it to mean normal fight with spike.

As for bowing over a corpse, I’ve often thought it could be taken as either a sign of respect or the victor posturing as though they gave a great performance. Having no interest in doing the latter, I’ve always used the less ambiguous salute.
