This is more of a QoL idea for some,

It seems recently I have been making more and more friends in WvW but they are on the opposing teams. Currently you cannot click on the player and right click their name and “Add Friend” but instead you add them to the block list, grab their ign and then whisper them/add them (after you unblock).

Seems a bit if a hassle to just friend someone who is on another server in WvW so…why doesn’t Anet just make it as easy as adding some random person in PvP/PvE? Where there is a way thats technically more work, no one can say that its to prevent salt (as ppl will whisper you anyway so using this excuse is bogus)

Its not a huge deal, but seems like something so simple made a bit more complicated.

Thoughts?

It is made this way to protect people from getting a lot of hate whispers. While it is still possible to do it by blocking them then adding them to your friends list to hate whisper them. The extra hurtles and hoops you have to jump through to hate whisper somone does cut down on the salty whispers a person can received. If it was opened to friend people so easily in wvw it could cause trouble. Tons of salt and harassment for one and then the enemy’s can use your whispers to clog up your chat panel making it harder to see squad chat. Sure you can turn off whispers but sometimes you have to keep your whisper panel open.

This looks more like a loophole. If friending enemy is disabled, then there’s no reason why messaging them should be allowed either. Enemy names are anonymized too [servername] [rank]. Disallowing right-click block for enemy server players would be a simple fix.

A possibility would be a request confirm :

  1. I right click on the invader’s portrait, and select “Ask as friend”.
  2. In invader’s contact panel, there’d be a “Friends requests” tab.
  3. My name appears in his tab, with a yes/now check thing.

And voilĂ . It won’t make things easier for hate and salt spreaders, and it’d fulfill the task.

Friend requests shoukd really be a thing. The follower’s tab feels creepy.

There are many legitimate reasons to talk with an enemy player. And salt whispers tend to be something to hang on the wall anyways.

Evrn in pvp where there is cross team chat, the salt tends to come from one’s own team more. That being said, how many of you would like a cross server chat that is unchecked by default?

for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Or maybe there should be an option to right click them and choose “Ask out” instead.

I actually instead of whispering said player, I send them a in game message. It’s always a considerate message, praising them on their technique, etc. I refuse to ever whisper/msg a player just to be a butthead. Made more friends being impressed and kind, even if they are on the opposing side.

I do think the current way of getting the id is the best way, because if it was easier to msg an opposing player I would assure you it wouldn’t be in kindness.
