Great idea OP. Thinking about the details I propose the following:

1. All new WvW roles/jobs should not change the player vs player damage/mitigation mechanics in force. Damage/mitigation against NPC’s can be changed;

2. Presently, WvW is all about the big blob zerg logic. Anything that changes it to a more important role for small parties influence on the overall system will be good. WvW will be more interesting with several commanders leading smaller squads in each map;

3. An easy way to implement an initial version of WvW roles/jobs will be to assign different tags to commanders, each tag represented by a symbol illustrating his squad role and providing to all squad members the correspondent buff for the role. For example, SCOUT Commander (tag symbol an eye) will provide to all his squad members extra movement speed while not in combat, extra stealth duration, etc;

4. Using this opportunity to decrease the price of the Commander tag mainly because the number of commanders have been steadily decreasing over time and with this new system having a commander tag would have a measurable and meaningful effect instead of being just a tag for people to run behind;

5. And as a final touch, adjusting the Outnumbered buff to provide extra useful buffs like less supply requirements to build siege (Resourceful Resistance), extra movement speed (Despaired Swiftness), extra damage/extra mitigation against NPC’s (Courageous Resistance), etc.

Meh – you’ll just have tons of players using tags that don’t right now. (i.e. you’ll always have globs of tags doing these various things (scout commander, resource resistance, etc.)

This in turn not only visually clutters the WvW map but makes it easier for spying (seeing relative numbers based on tag count in an area at a glance).

Honestly, I’d rather just have a weekly “random” map generator except with same placement of objectives/towers/keeps but differing terrain/elevation/dolyak pathing/etc. between them. Start off with one borderland in random/chaos mode.

The idea of roles is good but there are huge balancing issues with every single one of them (making current balance issues even more imbalanced).

The idea of roles is good but there are huge balancing issues with every single one of them (making current balance issues even more imbalanced).

Not if they kill the actual builds/gameplay a bit, remove cleaves from auto atacks(to reduce power creep overstacking) and drop the rune design to new rune system where they could add this roles to runes, selecting the rune would actually benefit your game style.

1st April joke, when gw2 receives a “balance” update.

Just wanted to say that this is an interesting suggestion! The team is interested in feedback on this idea and will continue watching this thread. However, just because we are following this thread doesn’t guarantee we will add it as a feature.

It’s a war. Please make it happen. Plus tanks from Char or Asura, a moving cata maybe.
and make the map bigger, just like elder scrolls online.

I’ve been playing for 4 years and there’s no interesting add on to WVW.
I stopped playing since January, cos my patience running thin.

I drop by this thread because my friend told me about this.
Also there’s a team suppose to think about this but this guy pitch the great idea.
You HAVE to give him something. This idea isn’t free ya know.

So please, do the right thing. And approve this idea. CHINA!

but I wanted to revive this idea. WIth gliders coming in, and potentially even mounts, can we see a testing of this idea? This can expand upon WvW with combat in the air.

Just imagine: Each server having ground troops, a navy, and airforce.

WvW needs artillery class like in world of tanks. You could stand in own keep and shoot other side of map. That would be fun.

Second this, sorry if this thread is necro in any form (was actually looking for this thread again) but we really could do with an additional feature such as OP’s suggestion, happy to state again. Would shake up the meta by far and involve more variety.

So in Warhammer Online each class had an ability that would help in Realm vs. Realm, such as a Black Orc having the ability to raise their shields up and block hot oil and arrows.

I would love to see more kits/banner like things in WvW that add variety to the game. Perhaps there could be some type of kit that equips shields that give different skills.

The sentry kits were a cool addition but no one seems to use them, I’ve always encouraged people to carry them around and drop med kits right before a fight but no one ells seems to use that tactic.

I think WvW really needs some stuff to make it less brainless and zergy and more tactical!

Also the current meta is horrid.

while i like the idea of distinctive role setups, especially for pvp, Anet have used a lot of resources trying to remove this aspect of the game, so it would go against their design philosophy.

besides that i feel like the complexity of combat in GW2 have already reached an absolute insane complexity where gaining all the needed knowledge in group combat is impossible.

besides that i would have loved if instead of going “every class should play every role” that they had limited the classes to at least an advanced trinity setup.
but as that is not going to happend in GW2, or at least they are going the opposited way currently, anything like this will either not happend or be nothing but a “title” which convey nothing and simply just add more clutter :/

:) oh please, I am on my knees for this one.. do NOT even consider this. As my previous post says, (and others have noted), this kind of change would pretty much obliterate the WvW population in a huge way.. imo.

Goood kittens! THis is the most backwards thread i’ve seen in a long time and here you are ‘supporting it’!!??! I’m totally not surprised AT ALL by this, but once again I must direct you to the many many many times ur supposed sense of common sense left the community on the ropes.

I apologize to the OP, but from what I am reading it paints a picture that you are very new to wvsw, and you have limited grasp on all the components at play in it. You can already build while in combat, you can already rez while in combat so long as you use ur skills to break into ooc and start rezing from ooc. And we don’t need more mercy runes….most of these things you suggest are alraedy in existence in teh game and most of us are scratching our heads wondering what 2x the effectiveness of existing features is gonna due to the gameplay.

Just imagine if the devs devoted some real effort to improving profession designs with wvw in mind… improving weapons, utilities and traits for wvw play… created more elites to fill out roles… worked on providing great support skills and a better UI to support playing support roles… reworked the condi systems to be reasonable… actually thought about better stealth and counter stealth mechanics… added more wvw maps… improved the neglected core professions…

I’d rather have the time, effort and resources devoted to something meaningful done with our classes, as opposed to gimmicks being introduced into wvw.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but perma stealth out of combat would be absolutely horrible. Completely game breaking in so many ways.
