The Death of Sanctum of Rall
Well for one, while the weekly events and stuff bring people into WvW, they don’t make people stay in WvW. SoR has the biggest potential population in T8, but they only show up once or twice a week for an hour or 2 to karma train and that’s it. How can you change that? Well, for one, actually spam the TS details in WvW chat. You guys still fear DDoS in T8? I don’t think anyone cares! Also, encourage and support the people who tag up. Encourage zerging. Zerging is a dirty word but it works to make people stick around. Most of all, GSCH needs to step up its focus in WvW if SoR ever wants to recover.

No offense but I don’t think you will find sympathy for SoR on any tier.

Are you guys, (and is Arenanet) opposed to merging two less-populated servers to garner more WvW players/coverage?
Well, you can’t just merge 2 servers since the number of servers has to be a multiple of 3. You’d have to axe an entire tier. People would be upset if their community is broken up. In the long term though, it may be needed if overall WvW population continues to decline and people who wish to keep on playing decide to leave those tiers for more populated servers. Anyone left would have no one to play with.
…or is SoR doomed to the gutter for the remainder of Guild Wars 2?
It can always end up being the next bandwagon server lol.

I’m sorely tempted to say cry after a year please… but meh that won’t help anything.
There is not much you can do indeed as the WvW pop has been shrinking. Someone has to go down for someone else to go up. All i can say is you should abandon thoughts of “winning” the ppt war as that will just make you extremely frustrated. Try to enjoy the game in a different style than ppt.

Actually, you’d have to merge at a minimum 4 servers. The delta of mergers and mergees has to be a multiple of 3.

The good news for this player is that the next step is Acceptance.

Sanctum of Rall was once a top tier WvW server, and now it sits dead last on the ladder.
Hundreds and hundreds of players have been leaving SoR to pursue a more worthwhile WvW experience.
With the introduction of the megaserver system, it is impossible to tell homeworld populations…. but I would be willing to bet that this mass exodus has actually killed the server.
So I ask you…..
How can we recover?

I’m for one not opposed to a merge. I find it sad that I happen to witness 2 server death in so little time. When I transferred from Mag at the end I had no idea such a relatively big pop server was so completely pve. It is even sadder considering how things were before the third season…
Hopefully we still have small windows where people play more but that is so little. I mean I enjoy playing solo and in small groups but the 3 vs 1 fights you have to go through to even get one camp can get old fast. Playing solo when there is a larger group somewhere else is way better.
I’m sorely tempted to say cry after a year please…

SoR wvw actually died mid s1. This is evident when you look back at the mass exodus right before the start of s2. The population of the server is quite large and it takes time for the casuals to realize what has happened and then move out. Some just need time to accept it and others are just very stubborn, fighting on beyond reason.
It has been through the extrodinary efforts of a few individuals that SoR has made it appear there is still a wvw force. That level of effort cannot be sustained indeffinatly. For the past few months its literally been 10 or less players fighting your entire servers (not counting gsch events).
Not considering the problem of merging SoR due to its history, what ever server the population gets pushed to would only get roughly 10 wvw players. It would be highly disruptive to all the servers and the population problems would start over again because 10 players is next to nothing. The other low bronze servers can contribute 40-60 maybe? Merge 2 bronze and get 100 strong but who ever gets SoR is now fielding…50.
Where do they go from here? Like above post said, SoR will get no sympathy. The rep is too bad. What kind of wvw players would would transfer in?

Pu-lease, we been fighting on the bottom for almost TWO YEARS. We have seen guilds poach our players countless times, and we hardly saw a 2nd place, even more a victory on a matchup over the course of the time (We have a grand total of 16 1st places in TWO YEARS from which 6 happened recently when we received transfers).
Yes, this kind of effort CAN be sustained IF the people doing it do it for FUN, and not because they belive they need to WIN, to have fun. Yes, nobody like to lose, but there are other kind of victories outside the ppt game.
If you get a good community group who can create a nice environment for players, you’ll problably see people peeking in, and if they like it they are likely to stay. But if the atmosphere around the community is toxic to the point people don’t even want to try, I guess it’s beyond salvation.

WvW is beyond repair for many servers, not just SoR. And honestly, most of the ppl you didnt like on SoR have probably bandwagonned onto some other server at this point. Isnt that the point of Wvw? Cherrypick?
Jeknar has it – when my own server (Ehmry Bay) plummeted through the ranks and ended up at the bottom, ET used to give us a good pasting. We pulled ourselves together and started winning more consistently, and even though lots of people were demoralized at the “we’ve fallen so far, why bother to play?” mentality, we did. And rose.
ET stayed low, because despite being a bunch of great people and solid players, they couldn’t field the numbers. But when they came out to play, they were there to play.
If you come out to flip some towers and keeps, and have a few fights, you’ll be fine.
If you think that the (since you came to bronze, anyway) zerging and k-training way of doing things is the only way to do it, you’re going to have a bad time.
Flip some camps, watch the response, take a tower. If you can muster five people together, start up Siegerazer. Relax and don’t make such a big deal about the PPT.
In time, you’ll pull in some PvErs and you’ll have the numbers to do something bigger – and you’ll be so much better if you can roam now while you’re outnumbered and without the support of a mass of people.
It’s why when my server fought yours, we won so much of the time but you won the PPT game.
You can do it too. At least go into WvW and do your dailies – that’s the gateway drug right there.
For a better community, you’d need GSCH to stop being peppy and get their act together in wvw, they couldn’t fight if their life depended on it. They come into wvw with random group composition, pve builds, etc. Can’t be blamed as they get whoever can show up.
Unfortunately for SoR, GSCH is their only chance at wvw. Like the other poster said, everyone literally jumped ship.
Why? Some of the native PvE guils on SoR are total kittens. SIN, sinister swarm had players grief us and their leaders ignored the situation forever. It took great effort from their very few WvW players to do something about it. There was another guild that was huge yet extremely insignificant to the point i forget their tag & name. Their leaders would litterally sit in lion’s arch showing off their legendaries in front of the bank. And when someone dropped banners, they would always cover them with their own. Grief in wvw and encouraged by their leader. Are those people still playing and on SoR, I wouldn’t know.
WvW guild being told to sit out to let those PvE guilds run their WvW event only to be begged to take over the map after, but still being talked kitten about.
Like other posters have said, SoR will get no sympathy. I wont talk for GSCH, but they have one big reason to stick with SoR that nobody else has and it is that the server was named in the honour of one of their late members.
Each WvW guild had their personal reasons for leaving the server, that may or not be related to the issue, but if that toxicity is still existent on that server, I doubt any wvw guild will even consider SoR as a potential destination.
And even back in the T1 days, SoR had a very small WvW population that kept the server there. Server complains about WvW players when there, now they complain about not having any…
WvW is beyond repair for many servers, not just SoR.
Everyone thought WvW was beyond repair on Eredon Terrace… Now we’re ranked 16th. I belive this is enough to invalidade your point.

I acknowledge that SOR is in last place on the WvW leaderboards, but I hardly agree SOR is dead. Over the past 2 months we’ve had a significant surge of new players, so much I ended up running a welcome to guild wars 2 event last weekend and will be continuing it this weekend. We had close to 40 participants last week, getting escorted around showing them what a world boss was and how to get to WvW.
Are we going to be a powerhouse like we were back when TW, CHOO, FEAR ran the show? Doubtful. SOR is in full recreational WvW mode now. People go out they have fun for a few hours then they leave. Thats life on SOR WvW right now.
Unless some guilds or mass amounts of new players join SOR we will likely stay there. The part that cracks me up is how many of the “Ex-SOR” players have to go point and make fun of us when this is an effect of them leaving.
Since this game launched GSCH has done it’s best to accommodate players and what they need. When Indo and company asked us to stay off the field until Thursday, we abided for almost a year. Until the queues were gone. We in fact moved our regular 6-9PM PST event to 12 – 3AM PST so that we could help out at night. We instead hosted events to put legendaries into SOR members hands being most serious WvW players don’t have time to get that stuff. So we GAVE AWAY 9 Legendary Weapons. Including Eternity. We started hosting community wide Guild Missions multiple times a week so everyone on the server could get credit.
Our community is built around professional lives. We’re not a community that has players with a lot of time. We don’t schedule our lives around our gametime, we schedule gametime around our lives.
For example. Free time is not something I have. I run the technology department for my company by day, play and manage 3 football (Competitive Mens, Recreational Coed , and Recreational Mens) teams by weeks end, bowl competitively on mondays, have a wife and a child, maintain 14 different web sites, and run Gaiscioch in 2 different games. Did I mention I also run Gaiscioch Magazine and our charity events?
I get between 12 hours a week to play games. 6 During primetime, 6 during the middle of the night. Thats my life. I don’t get the luxury of playing games 40 hours a week. Those days left me in jr. high school.
Many of our members are in the same boat. They don’t have a whole lot of time to play so we all manage our schedules and pencil in time to be together. The rest of the week is spotty at best. We’ve got several scheduled events each week but we rarely see more than 20 GSCH at any of them. Most of the time it’s between 9 – 15 GSCH and whoever we can find on SOR.
Gaiscioch is built from the ground up as a place where active professionals can have a chance to be a part of a community. Most of us have been kicked out of other guilds for not being active enough.
I’m sorry if you are placing your own ideas of what the average player is, on our community because thats not the case. Our average member spends 8 hours a week in game. Thats it. It’s not because we don’t want to, it’s because our lives are that busy. Games are what we do for fun.
As I said loooooong ago.
“Tier one or Tier none does not matter, We are here to stay.”
Sanctum of Rall is our home, and we will continue doing what we can, when we can. Aside from that, it’s up to each player to decide how they want to spend their day. If theres a WvW guild that wants to fight then I welcome you to come over. We will welcome you with open arms so long as you realize. What you see now from GSCH is all you’re going to get. The rest is on you. Life simply doesn’t allow us the freedom to play as often as we like. I’m sorry if that makes you angry, but thats how it is. Families and Real Lives come first ALWAYS.
Additionally the day they take SOR away from us is the day we leave Guild Wars 2. Were playing GW2 to honor a fallen friend. When his tribute server is gone so will we fade into the mists. I’d rather be last place and still honor my friends memory that be first and let it fade.

On SoR the notion of “casual” wvw is heavily promoted. Basically it’s pop in and out whenever you like, mess around for a bit, get a few bags, give a few bags, and then go back to whatever other stuff you enjoy in game.
Until that changes and they are able to get and keep serious wvw oriented players/guilds then no, there is no chance of them climbing back up. The wvw players simply don’t have the mentality to be competitive. And for those who are competitive it’s extremely frustrating. Not just losing constantly but the entire “casual wvw” attitude.
All you can do is put your head down and then push forward and try to bring new blood into the mix. Check out the sig and you’ll see i am not speaking from a place of ignorance. We are currently rebuilding as best we can in SF. Good luck and godspeed.

I’d argue that is what much of the ppl in wvw are/were. It’s just the more serious and competitive players all jumped ship from each server and bandwagoned on to a select few. People like to win. And people will stack the deck to do so. I’d hazard that much of the big guilds on t1 servers werent there originally.
You know, I’ve been completely oblivious to the story behind the naming of this server until I read this just now:
http://www.sanctumofrall.com/about/#2
Just thought I’d say this is truly an amazing and inspiring story. Long live SoR.
SoR WvW died when all the internal organs (the players who made it live) evacuated the body. Now all that’s left is the hollow husk of a shell with the same name on it. Give it up dude. If you want to WvW. go find a serious community of WvW’rs who don’t get bound up with the mental constructs of what server name they’re fighting for, and instead play to win whatever match up they face.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious, (that I can just jump on the bandwagon and server swap like everyone else).
I’m asking how to rejuvenate a server…. not help kill it.
Hopefully this thread gets some gears turning inside people’s heads, (both in the player community and with Anet) about WvW in general.
What do we do with a dead server with no way of bringing it back to life?

Well, for starters, make sure you play. This means that if you are alone on the map, endure on it for at least 20 min before deciding to just log off. If everybody does this, it will help retain fragile people (fair weathers) on the map who can’t wait for 30 sec if no tag is present. SoR is like 99% fair weathers…
Second, if you have a tag, accept to use it when you see map chat is getting desperate. I know it is not easy to be a commander in SoR since so many don’t even know what to do when you drop a ram and you have to litterally travel with many to the camp so they will take supplies, but it needs to be done. There is no core on that server around whicth to gather so be that core for 15 – 30 min from time to time. With time the proportion of autonomous players will rise. For now many couldn’t hope to save their own life if they had a nuclear kitten nal at their disposal.
Third, don’t despair yourself. I know it is hard because each time I’m on the field and I hear my echo I’m wondering why I’m not going somewhere else… maybe I will but for now I stay.
Otherwise, just go to another server. There will be no easy way to get what you had.

I see nothing wrong with SoR deciding to be a casual WvW server and I don’t think GSCH has ever tried to be anything other than themselves so I have a lot of respect for that. There should be places for people to play for the fun of it and not stress out over PPT. From the sounds of it, those who didn’t care for the laid back casual attitude have moved on so just keep cultivating the kind of community you all want to embody and don’t worry about scores. Glad to hear a lot of drama guilds have moved off SoR, sounds like a lovely place to retire to someday.

This post is insulting to people on severs that have played in bronze for the longest time, don’t you think? Were they never alive?
Broken game mode is broken game mode. As long as we get this non-support, more and more servers will have trouble and eventually move up find something else to do. My opinion is that such action is somewhat intentional until they finally find the excuse to put most of wvw out of its misery via closures, and the final form of wvw will look like EOTM if it continues at this rate.
But that is some nonsense for the future, as for now…
Stop looking at the scoreboard and fight. For reals. Coverage is a drug, the more you get, the more you’ll need. Don’t be like “we don’t care about ppt, we are only here for fights” because that line of BS has no value these days.
Don’t play wvw for PPT, don’t play wvw for fights. Play wvw for wvw. Trying to splinter the approaches only causes a fractured community. Why? Because what you see today may no longer be there someday in the future. Find people you know and trust and try to form a community. In the end, it’s about having a group of people on the same page. The rest is just a friggin game.
My own server has had several exodus of our own and we can be a desolate server during some weeks (literally several people on maps during prime time), but we do sometimes pull together and remind people we’re here. That’s good enough for me to stay.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Me and my 2 friends picked this server BECAUSE its the worst. We are vet pvp’ers and it is our goal to make this server better. If we succeed its because WE did it not because we jumped on some huge zerg band wagon where what we do hardly makes a difference.

Yes, very true. When a wvw oriented guild sees a server being successful on a regular basis of course they’re going to want to move there. No shame in that. There’s nothing particularly honorable about constantly fighting a losing battle.

There is nothing wrong with a lot of people being casual. I like being casual too. However, an entire server of casual only is a problem for a game like WvW.
There need to be a core to hold all that casual material or you simply won’t have anything remotely enjoyable on WvW. To be honest, had I knew you guys were THAT casual wall to wall I’d never have made my move to your server. Stop advertising PvX and say PVE period. THAT will give a way better account of what the server is and prevent ppl finding out the reality the hard way.

When IOJ was at its lowest, the players that still came out made it fun. Laugh at the blobs that outman your group, and when you best them, hype it up. Attitude is everything. I am sure it obvious, but you have to ninja to get as much ppt as you can.

There’s lots of good people on SoR. Sadly, there’s not enough people who care left to pick it up from 24th.
Fog’s a good guy and I have a lot of respect for what he’s been able to do with GSCH, but seeing our server called “non-competitive” and “beer league” by my teammates was pretty much the last straw.
Still, all the best to my soon-to-be-former-servermates.

Had a good time doing wvwvw tonight. Ran with 2 guilds each fielding about 4 or 5 and had some good fights, captured and held a few keeps. Pretty successful. Hardly in a place to take on a tier 1-6 but with a little work we can move up. Good job to those I ran with tonight.

The reason this is in the WvW forum is because WvW is the only place where servers actually matter anymore thanks to megaserver.
As far as my absence goes, I did WvW on SoR with my guild, and half of the members in my guild left to form a new guild on Db or transferred to SoS for better WvW….
…and it is not that I don’t still enter WvW either….
It is that WvW as I know it no longer even exists on SoR.
All we have atm is karma train…. and if all you want to do is karma train you might as well just Eotm.
When my guild started getting serious about WvW, SoR had already been dragging at the bottom for quite some time.
We pushed as hard as we could to get SoR’s recovery started from its bottom position on the ladder…
We knew if we could get WvW back, the server would come back to life, and we talked about how great it would be if we were the ones to make it happen and put the gears in motion.
…but as I said earlier…. When all of our guild members who were serious about WvW realized we were wasted potential on SoR, they simply transferred.
WvW is about coverage above all else, and regardless of how well you play…. if you don’t have the coverage, you don’t win the matchups.
One guild does not make or break a WvW server, and case in point with my guild…. when the weight of the server weighed down upon our shoulders, we cracked and fragmented.
Our guild was not able to be successful on four different maps at once, 24 hours a day…. and yet there were no other guilds that showed up or came out of hiding to create a snowball effect of players returning to WvW, or fill in the gaps of our downtime.
Too much responsibility being placed on our guild, because there was nobody else with the numbers or the leadership to man up and take care of business when we weren’t around.
So I ask you….
How big of a following do you need to get the ball rolling?
A guild of 500 active players was not enough to spark any new interest in WvW.
And don’t even attempt to try and promote or plug SoR’s "official teamspeak "because it is just a bunch of entitled crybaby nobodies who attempt to try and run the show, and instead continue to run the server into the ground.
We could definitely do with a fresh start with a new teamspeak complete with new administration and moderation if things are ever going to go any differently.

GSCH is a casual community. We’re not competitive, and we’re not going to change to fit a competitive mindset. A year ago, if not more, we had a lot more active people and made coordinated efforts in WvW with greater activity. It was amazing back then. SoR could put a queue on every single battleground.
Nowadays, I don’t even know. The state of WvW itself sucks. Not just for SoR. If I want to get my fix of massive-scale PvP, I just play Planetside 2.
If you get a good community group who can create a nice environment for players, you’ll problably see people peeking in, and if they like it they are likely to stay. But if the atmosphere around the community is toxic to the point people don’t even want to try, I guess it’s beyond salvation.
I’m pleased to announce that SoR is probably one of, if not the nicest MMORPG server community you will ever find.

Dh was stuck in bronze for a year and a half. A year and a half. Now? We recently dominated the strongest t5 server, chances are we’ll be in t4 eventually. We’re on the rise, and more transfers are coming in, because we pushed through. Every time a bunch of guilds jumped ship, our friends left and we wondered around with no com… we pushed through.
ET is as much a T8 server as JQ is a T1 server… and now sudden;y, they’re at the top of bronze.
GoM was in t8 for quite a while, they’re beating the middle t3 server (IoJ) at this moment.
IoJ and HoD were both stuck in bronze for quite a while. We used to dominate them day in and day out. Both server’s vets will almost certainly remember their matchups with Dh. They both pulled out quite a while ago and have been quite steadily able to stay in silver league.
Servers rise and fall in WvW, the only thing that is constant is that servers grow/shrink. Now more than ever ranks are changing, with GoM/Dh taking silver by storm, and many silver servers falling into bronze.
The tips I can give are these:
1. Recruit. Make sure your server has an active, updated, and HONEST recruitment thread in the recruitment forums. If you get people to come to your server with dishonest claims, they’ll leave. Let them know what your weaknesses and your strengths are. Sell your server for what it’s good at. Get in contact with rich members of your server and see if they’d be willing to chip to AID transfers of players/guilds to your server (don’t buy people, again it won’t end well).
2. Contribute. Get a tag, if there isn’t a tag around and you’re outnumbered, don’t be afraid to tag up. Even if you get hardly anyone on you, persevere. More and more PvX players will come out if there is but a simple tag to follow. This will give your server some stability, instead of quitting WvW entirely because you’re doing bad, people will keep trying because they’ve got someone to follow.
3. Organize. Try to get your pugs into TS, if they won’t train them in basic WvW strategy (e.g. tell them to have blast finishers ready for when fire/static/water fields are dropped). Improve the capabilities of the people you DO have. There is nothing that impresses a guild interested in transferring more than competent pugs.
4. Try to keep positive. Don’t sit in map chat and tell your pugs how much they suck. Don’t tell them SoR is dead and you’ll never go anywhere. Even if this were true, there’s a saying in my family. When you speak, it should always be truthful, but not all truths should you speak. Make people WANT to be there by keeping a fun environment.

All these servers rose up because others collapsed or got a lot weaker. The rising through ranks has the ability to give a false perception of strength and/or stability which encourages ill informed transfers and has the potential to snowball further. Not saying there’s anything wrong with that, some servers have definitely benefited from this good fortune.
Scrap WvW and make up Alliances for players to join weekly. This way it’s more fluid, dynamic, organic, and populations are easily managed.

This idea makes me curl up on the floor in a little ball and cry.

Every one of them, eh?
They rise because currently they are more capable (as a server) than the people in their tier.
Motion is a sign of health – be cheered that this is happening. Not being able to recite the server list in order from memory means that things are changing, and is definitely a good thing in WvW.
As some other have said, if you want to resurrect your server, you need a lot of motivation.
WvW, at least in bronze league, is nothing but a moral game.
A map without a tag isn’t a happy map : players who do not see a tag automatically assume that the map is empty and leave 2 seconds after.
I remember a while back, I would tag up in mid-aftenoon EU. The first day we started with 3 and an hour later we were ten. Two days later, at the same time, we had 20 players running around.
But the second the tag leaves, so does a large chunk of players.
You need a core base of players, not necessarily a lot. Players that will tag up and won’t give up after getting wiped. Slowly, you’ll gather more and more players.

That’s the point. No matter the reasoning behind it (and for the record, your reasoning can’t apply to ET, they got tons of transfers will sitting at rank 24, they didn’t get transfers after winning), if you’re patient your server can survive long enough to move up.
Servers rise and fall. How and why that happens is relatively unimportant, the point is that even a server at the bottom of t8 can and will rise. ET is one such example.

I’ve said it before, my negative experiences since moving to SoR from Mag has been minimal. I myself am quite good at ignoring negativity in video games. Those kinda ppl are like that in real life, and a rotten existence I bet that is.
Yeah, it’s not the optimal setting for “serious” WvW play, but I always end up having fun. As Synosius said, we have a small-med sized group who are quite dedicated to wvw. During the day it can be a ghost town, but I or a guildy will pop on a comm tag and take camps and within 30 min or so we have a nice little group. If more ppl during the real slow times did the same(more often) the casuals who peek into the maps and leave when they don’t see a tag would more than likely stay and join on you.
I’ve actually learned to play a lot smarter since moving to SoR(since we’re outnumbered probably 75% of the time). That, and I’ve had the luxury to play and learn with/from a couple really experienced and crafty commanders when I play in the evenings.
I’ll help any way that I can, so if anyone here from SoR wants, add me to friends, whisper me in game if you need some warm bodies. If I’m not in the middle of something, I’d be happy to join. I might even bring some guildies. Most are PVE/PVPers, but we’ve got some great wvw players. I’m fairly positive things will turn around if SoR can stay away from the infighting. If others don’t push their ideas on how wvw should be played(unless it’s a new wvw player), I think it really can turn around.
And the guilds who leave for more serious competitive play, I don’t blame them at all. Yeah, it does hurt the server, but that’s the style of game they want to play. They paid for the game just like me, who am I to say what style of play a guild is looking for? A couple of the guilds who left were part of hate towards SoR. They’re gone. hated to see MEGA leave, but they can’t be blamed for that. GL HF, don’t complain, be part of a solution if you’re gonna stay.
