The Death of Sanctum of Rall
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I’m dying at the suggestion that SoR is winning because of skill. I LOVE all my SoR friends, but the number of times guys were like, “Oh, we’d win with equal numbers!” on a map that was queued?
It was a lot.
SoR has pretty good coverage across time zones, mostly thanks to commanders who work their butts off (Aeobhean, whose name I can’t spell, you are a hero). But it’s a lot of numbers on weekends and superior numbers overnight.
(Note the primetime +190 tick.)
And how long ago were you on SoR? 3+ months ago? The community in WVW is completely different now and different, new guilds are the ones running. They’re also carrying the server (as I said in an earlier post, but it’s easier to ignore things that don’t support a desired agenda) and there is no way they could keep up the hours they were putting in at the start. As I said, SoR couldn’t even put more numbers out than GaoM last matchup at primetime. If you “loved your friends at SoR” so much, you would be optimistic and happy that they have new people interested in WVW and are having some success, not taking comfort in low upticks and essentially telling them they suck based on pretense.
SoR does not have a lot of numbers most of the time and the only queue it has had since has been EB at reset this matchup only. They have not had anything close to the coverage you’re talking about unless a guild or comm stays up to defend, although it has been better this matchup. As an example, Kaineng is a server that SoR DOES actually outnumber greatly, but they had competitive matches with them because their primetimes were so different. Kain had little resistance most nights, and SoR had less resistance than that most days. Kain actually gave SoR more of a fight than GaoM strictly because of their hours matching with SoR’s bad ones, despite the fact that GaoM was the one that outnumbered SoR.
Your “speaking from experience” is from experience on a server that is not the same server as the one you were on. SoR’s WVW population is small (but numbers are improving from match to match) for the amount of players it has and you seem to be holding a grudge against a different community because of a bad experience you had with the one that preceded it. It is a game, that’s childish.
I’m honestly not sure how a couple of you could be so upset after so long, to where you would hold it against a new community on the server. You’ve got random dudes mad that they’re succeeding because they don’t want them to, and another guy upset because if they see significant success then it’s going against the “spirit of the server” when he himself isn’t even on it anymore. Utterly ridiculous. Former SoR has to be the most immature server P4P and it’s a good thing those members either matured or moved on.
I really wish there was something that could be said to make you guys feel better and find comfort in something else. The sooner you accept that it’s a new community and none of what happened before matters, the sooner you will find you do not have the desire. At least, I would hope you do not find it reasonable to keep returning to threads and holding old grudges against a community who had nothing to do with it.
SoR could drop back into inactivity, or it could rest in the middle tiers. Who knows? The haters (good lord, a server with haters, kindergarten..) in this thread are more concerned about it than SoR’s new WVW community, that’s the interesting part.
And @axo I spent 22months on SoR I know the server and many people there very very well, which is why I said what I did. Some of my previous posts were not intended to be set in that tone, but the posts made by some other people kind of angered me to the point where my tone was less then civil, but hey how many of us never did that.
Fair enough, everybody loses their cool sometimes :P. I would still suggest separating your negativity for the old server from your opinion of the new one. The community really is quite different, even if some of the old players are still around.
I’m not sure who you’ve been talking to then, though. Bard and Omen are the biggest presences in SoR’s WVW right now, along with ecto, SoR and some up and comers. GSCH still has a presence (especially when they do guild raids at night), and they do join in with the other guilds at times, but it’s definitely Bard and Omen who are pulling most of the weight. They aren’t giant guilds, but they put in very long hours when they can, and when they can’t SoR has a hard time going on the offensive due to a great numbers disadvantage. This is from my observations in recent matchups at least.

What T5 server are you talking about CD or IoJ both got their WvW population destroyed by being in T3.
Be that as it may there’s still a whole Texas kitten load more of them than there are of us. They outnumber us AND have better coverage yet we still remain competitive. I am kitten proud of SoR.
What a load of bull. You guys have similar coverage and numbers. Why do you think the scores are so close? Don’t tell me you actually think it’s because of skill? Some SoR guy mentioned they queued 3 maps last week on reset. Last time CD and IoJ saw anything close to a 3 map queue was during the tournament before both servers’ guilds jumped onto the T2 bandwagon. Interesting tidbit. Mag with a 3 map reset queue absolutely steamrolled both CD + Ebay and would have crushed IoJ too if they were in the same matchup.
Whatever makes you feel better. All I know is both CD and IOJ run their kittens off if they don’t outnumber us. I was so not impressed with either of you. You win this based off pure numbers, nothing else. Yes we fielded tons of people over the weekend, but you guys can do the same 24/7, we simply don’t have the coverage on weekdays.
And the majority of your blob sucks, catch them in an even fight and they barely even know what to do. You can have this tier, looking forward to moving back down. FC gave us better fights than you.
SoR is an awesome community, why we have so many haters is baffling. I wouldn’t be talking this crap if the hate wasn’t coming out all over the place.
What gives the impression that the SOR wants to get to t1?
I can’t speak for all, but i know i don’t want it.
I haven’t heard one person, in fact we don’t like where we are right now. Need to take it back down a notch. These T5 peeps are too elitist for me anyway, rather just have fun.

Come on. I’ve participated a bit in this current matchup, and there have been some great fights even when SoR is outnumbered. That guy does not represent all of CD, one whiner never will. But when you reply like this you just do the exact same thing that he’s doing and neither of you look better for it.
Perfectly balanced matchups almost never happen, so there is always going to be a server that can field more people than the others. SoR was able to combat their numbers by having very dedicated guilds, that alone is proof that it is not impossible to overcome. But a few people can’t do those hours forever, and it’s the fault of the rest of the server for not being good enough to overcome the odds, not the fault of the opposing server for inherently having more people. That means the lesson to take from this is that SoR has some training to do so it has more groups good enough to fight outnumbered and more good people willing to join WVW, not that the other servers suck or are elitist. That doesn’t make sense, it’s an excuse.
The hate in this thread is almost completely stemmed in grudges held against the old community, taking it personally or taking a you vs the world stance is not the mature road to take either. People like timmy and XTD are reasonable people, I’m pretty sure just having that explained to them is enough. The unreasonable ones won’t be stopped through any method, and every server including SoR has those people, so ignore it.
“I wouldn’t be talking crap if they didn’t talk crap first” is as juvenile as hating a server for its past. Nothing gets resolved if at least one party does not attempt to make reason. And I’d hope that is an attainable goal over a subject as ineffectual as a game.

@axolotl, I will respectfully ask that you do not look at my thoughts in black and white views, and attempt to jump to consequences in regards to whether or not I want SoR to rise or fall, live or die, etc I am merely engaging in a dicussion. My recent posts were more based on the last 2 years and how SoR has dealt with success and the friction between the wvw community and GSCH and others.
The main problem as I see it, is essentially the sentimental attachment to a server. Heres why, as a server rises in ranks and tiers it will find itself needing to gain coverage and expand its wvw community, failure to do so results in frustration and friction in the server, this has happened many times on sor, been through it myself. If the server gains coverage the wvw community has to step up more which will cause friction with, mainly GSCH because of their sentimental attachment to SoR because they will feel like they cannot do what they want to, ask anyone about the t1 days when the wvw guilds asked GSCH not even to participate in wvw, I was there, I didnt agree with it, but I can tell you about it.
Please try to understand I am not rooting against SoR, it was painful watching the fall and multiple exoduses, being through all that, trying to rebuild, I wouldnt wish that on any server. I am just pointing it out, something to keep in mind. My main reason for leaving was I wanted a more competitive wvw environment, I love t1 because its always active, bronze was ok for awhile but got boring to often. But some love it which is perfectly fine, just not for me. Also this post is not meant to place blame on GSCH, they are a great community with lots of great and generous people, I havent always agreed with everything they have done, but I admire them regardless. In fact the story of the naming of the server was one of the main reasons I transfered to SoR when I was just starting the game, it was a touching tribute.
Honesty is not insulting, stupidity is.

I feel like you don’t come off the way you want to, in that case, and I don’t mean that as a slight. It’s an issue inherent to text. It is very easy to get a doom-wishing vibe off of someone when a server is doing well and they feel the need to make negative comments or predictions about it based on the past. I apologize if you felt I was labeling you, I really did not mean to, but as I also interpreted your posts negatively, so could you interpret mine :P.
SoR is still in the tier 5-6 range and their goal is to build up enough to be competitive in the 4-5 range, the higher tiers are not terribly relevant to their community right now. I think they are doing great with what they have accomplished in as little as a month, and that should be the subject of discussion. If you are not rooting against SoR, then I don’t feel bringing up the past is necessary, as SoR is not what it was.
We have to remember that not even a month ago they were losing in the bottom tiers, they have come a long way in a short amount of time. I think it’s extremely hasty to start discussing the potential drama or whether or not they can be competitive in higher tiers. It’s very baffling. I think a more positive outlook would have been more appropriate than this discussion, but that’s my opinion and we’re all permitted to discuss what we please, haha.
As for GSCH, I can’t pretend to say I know where they stand, but they seem to be meshing well with the new competitive guilds so I guess we’ll see what happens if it ever even becomes a relevant topic. Most are happy just to be in active tiers, not worrying about politics lol.
SoR reached number 1 when the massive WvW guilds left SBI and went to the lowest server with the challenge of making it number one. They attracted a lot of guilds on the way and you guys acomplished the gaol but most of those guilds have moved on, acomplishing what they wanted.
I guess there’s a chance huge guilds could transfer again.
Ok. I take back whatever I said about SoR having equal coverage and numbers. For a brief moment, I actually thought T5 would be balanced again.

In all honesty, over half of [Bard] haven’t been running as hard as we usually do this week and I suspect that’s the same for most other players in WvW. But you’re right, we don’t have the same numbers or coverage. Still though, I’ve noticed that number slowly creeping up what with the expansion announcement.
And with all the hate that as been flying around this thread for the old WvW community, I have to say that in the last 2 months since returning, the guys in WvW have been completely different. The mood has changed drastically from what it used to be and there’s a much better relationship between the ‘hardcore’ WvW guilds and ‘casual’ guilds. Rarely do I see our TS empty or without at least one group of people running in WvW and that includes people from both ‘hardcore’ and ‘casual’ guilds.
I think the main difference is that the community finally feels like an actual community again. There are no egos to deal with and there’s no segregation between guilds, it’s extremely easy to be able to hop into a channel with players from another guild and quickly feel as if you’re a part of the team and valued as a fellow member, rather than just another player on the same server.
So yes, Sanctum of Rall’s history in WvW my have been marred, somewhat, by various things in the past but what really matters now is that we’re growing again and having fun whilst we do so. There are still a few who are focusing on driving the server up the Tiers but I believe the general consensus is that we’re just happy to be active in WvW once again.

Truthfully, it’s impressive that you guys were able to hold the scores within a couple hundred up to the 100k mark, even taking the lead at times. You’re bound to burn out when you’re playing those long hours and are often outnumbered. But you did prove that SoR is more than capable of competing with tier 5 servers, it just needs to expand its WVW community so it doesn’t rest on the shoulders of a few small to medium sized guilds, as it’s just unreasonable to expect them to be able to keep that up.

I’m glad that we managed to make an impression. It’s exciting to be getting recognition for the hours we put in. (Even if we did slack off towards the latter end of this week) And, again, you’re right, we do need to improve our WvW numbers. Sadly, however, I don’t think that’ll happen anytime soon unless, of course, Anet decide to announce another tournament. Because the only thing that seems to draw people towards a Bronze Tier server, these days, are WvW Tokens and the prospect of fights. And the former seems to be the more desirable of the two.
What gives the impression that the SOR wants to get to t1?
I can’t speak for all, but i know i don’t want it.
You are not alone. All I ever wanted was competitive matches regardless of tier (too bad our opponents this week seem to see things otherwise when looking at their strategy and behavior).
The community we have since Christmas is drastically different than it was before that point in a positive way. The player base has also gotten better/more experienced as a whole and fairweathers come more often as a result of that success, IMHO.

SoR has quite a large PVE community. If Bard (or any of SoR’s new WVW guilds) has the resources at this point to try reaching out to them, it might be an idea to teach them how to do WVW. That’d be my suggestion, anyway. A lot of PVE players are intimidated by WVW and would just need to be eased in by experienced members of the community.
I’ve seen you guys advertising and recruiting in the WVW maps from time to time when I pop in, if you aren’t already getting PVE players into the mode then it couldn’t hurt to start. SoR is in a good position to start training interested players to WVW, it can be competitive in any matchup it gets in these tiers without having to worry about inexperienced people taking up spots since there is no queue.
Either way, keep up the good work! Home-grown WVW guilds are what is going to give SoR the base it needs to expand, and even if you don’t win every matchup you will slowly attract more SoR players into WVW and more people into joining SoR if they see it is holding its own without a bandwagon or transfers. And from what I’ve seen of the new community in the maps and on TS, it’s a very friendly environment so those new people will be much more likely to keep playing WVW. Doing a good job!
I run with a very small Guild on SoR (Dark Strength, there are 3 of us, with a 4th coming along). We missed a lot of the mass exodus and I wasn’t really aware of any controversy. But I have a lot of loyalty to SoR.
I like being the underdog. And there are some really great commanders, many at BARD like the above poster mentioned. I’m a huge fan of the defensive acumen of Eko Eko.
I don’t think Dark Strength has much impact on SoR, but we will continue to throw our best efforts into WvW for SoR and I hope others join us. This week was super competitive for along time and then we got spanked. And you know what? That is okay. I’m so happy we took on some good servers and gave a very good accounting of ourselves.
As for the commanders and environment, it has been nothing but positive. I’m still learning to be a good WvW player (I mostly play an Ele, who seems to be super important after stability changes). But I’ve been helped over and over. I love when 5 of us defend a tower succesfully or a smaller number of us smash into a zerg and beat it off. Those are moments I play for!
So, yeah, SoR might have fallen from its lofty position, but I’m really happy being on this team and having a blast. That is my bottom line…

I left in December. I snipped your post because holy kitten, dude, that’s an essay. I don’t hold any grudges against my friends from SoR, perhaps you misunderstood what I was doing was some gentle side-poking. It was meant in good fun.
Anyway, I’m happy Omen and Bard are “carrying the server,” as you said, though that process has gone poorly many times before. Guild decides it will “save” SoR, runs hard, doesn’t get support, burns out, transfers. I saw it time and time again while I was on SoR and then did the same thing myself, more or less.
Also, I’m sad to hear the WvW community is “completely different” as the SoR community was so fantastic. Nice to hear my pals from ecto are still stepping up, though.
tl;dr relax, I was making a joke, I don’t hate SoR, please don’t write 5000 words back to me.

cant post about SoR with out timmy popping up. left the server months ago and still cant stop talking about.

I figured you’d appreciate an actual description and analysis over me telling you to stop being hurt. That’d just be flamebaiting.
You were not making a joke, there was not even an inkling of humor in your post. You were claiming that SoR could not be remaining competitive due to skill, and continued on to make claims about SoR’s numbers despite not having been on the server for months. Those aren’t punchlines, it all reeks of an attempt to downplay the success they’ve had. You got called out on it and backtracked. That’s fine, it was a mistake, people are more than capable of moving on.
And sure, it could happen, maybe the new guilds will end up leaving the server one day. I don’t see how that is relevant. Perhaps, if you wish for people to believe you are actually happy for the server and your “old friends”, you will display happiness and celebrate with them rather than try to downplay their accomplishments, make groundless excuses for why it happened, and then claim you are happy for them once somebody corrects you. I know, crazy how your actions dictate the impression you leave on people.

I don’t know you and don’t care to celebrate with you. I’ve chatted with my friends from SoR and they know how I feel.
Anyway, good luck in the future, and as I said, I’m really looking forward to an SoR/NSP matchup. Maybe with Darkhaven. That’d be fun.

Nobody is demanding that you celebrate with them if you don’t care to, what is being questioned is your decision to post if your intention is to downplay any successes they have, especially with misinformation as your tool. At that point you have to ask yourself if it is a reasonable thing to do.
I’m not even a frequent SoR WVW player, so you wouldn’t be celebrating with “me”. Anyone could see some of what is said in this thread and find it ridiculous.
Good luck to you too, and I hope the next time we speak the mood will be brighter.
