The State of Kitten Talking
I agree. Kittens are cute so why can’t we talk about kittens? They must love puppies.
However, if your talking about trash talking, its harmless but some people will always go too far. Best to keep it down low and be smarter with the trolling if you must.

Agreed. ANet doesn’t want WvW to be competitive though… :/ which is lame.
Well, as for Mike Ferguson being an old DAoC hand, recall that DAoC didn’t have forums, they left us to our own devices on the VNBoards. Which may explain why so many of us have a hard time being socially acceptable on message boards in general…..

But I don’t want to think.
I support this. I’ve had 90% of my posts in our string of matchup threads removed, and I think each one of them would have encouraged DB/FA to log on and kill more Maguumans. I’m actually helping Anet keep their activity rate up.
Just use unofficial forums? My guess is they have to try and keep a certain “standard” on their official forums or something.
Or…you could at least pretend you’ve been in a few fights and not run to the forums everytime you win one…
ps – if you didn’t play on Mordred you didn’t really play DAOC, you were a carebear (how’s that for kitten talk?)

If there was a popular kitten talking unofficial forum, I would be all over it.
This game was designed for the “casual” player, not the “hardcore” one. That’s why you cannot message or trash talk someone that killed you in WvW. Or why in most PvE you have almost no way to grief other players. Or use offending character names. All the “kewl” stuff “hardcore” people enjoy doing. ’Cuz it be fun and competitive.
If they do not allow you to use offensive language for naming your toon or in map/whispers, what makes you think they will allow you to do it in the official forums? There are alternate private forums for that. Or other games.
Allowing people to do that would gradually chase away from the game the ones that are annoyed by such behavior,

That’s the spirit!
There is more griefing in city map chats than cross realm whispers about killing pixels. Lift all chat limitations!
I don’t understand where the idea that kitten talking is somehow part of the competition. People who win all the time, or at least frequently, don’t have to talk kitten because they have been there before and its nothing new. They don’t need the admiration of their victims or their enemies and they certainly don’t want to hear you cry about it after.

I’m better than you at this child’s game and would like to prove it when your consistent failure leads you to t3.
Someone needs to make an unofficial WvW forums for all the hardcore trakittenalking… It would be so fun. And I mean no limitations.

Awh, you remember us! <3
I agree. A-net treats us like we are 12 years old its absurd. Can’t even message our enemies? Are you kidding me? I am an adult and If I want to message my enemy I should be allowed to, that’s why the ignore button exists. I swear I feel like all A-net does is cater to the casual crowd and does nothing for us “hardcore” players. I guess its the evolution of MMO gaming. All that companies want to do now is cater to the masses and make money (kind of like the music industry), and they don’t care about the quality of the game for all type of gamers anymore. Also its pretty sad that this post probably has a 50% chance of getting infracted by a moderator. Can’t even speak your mind on these forums without getting the rebel treatment. I just wish they didn’t treat us like little kids. It is so demeaning.
Making a new trash talk folder area, not viewable without accepting the specific code of misconduct for that area is not a bad idea.
But then again the request is coming from gamers who do not wish to follow the code of conduct they signed to gain access to these exisiting forums.
Very likely people would post non trash talk posts and be infracted for breaching the new code of misconduct….

Works for me.
Personally hearing people throw insults back and forth, isn’t fun for me. If you want to brag about how you think you used a great strategy or had a great victory that is fine, just be respectful and don’t attack other players or get into fights with other people on the forums. Anet doesn’t/hasn’t lock a thread for someone saying Maguuma is awesome and we have used some great strategies. Again just show good sportsmanship.
I for one am so thankful Anet makes this a place where we can discuss the game without having to deal with racist/sexist/homophobic ect. comments and attacks on each other. I wish more gaming communities tried to do this because it’s getting to be a more common problem.
Personally I would like to know why some people from an opposing server are able to invite me into a group. I had one person spam this so I left it up for a minute, then log off their character quickly, guest to my server so they could see my name, just to insult me for winning a fight. It was sad and made me so glad I don’t have to deal with that very often. So thank you Anet!

I agree 100% with this. The amount of times i’ve been infracted and thought, ‘what on Earth did I say wrong?’. Not exactly sure why they’re enforcing such a strict culture of not treading on anyones feelings. I certainly understand to a point, but it seems to be taken WAY overboard in this forum. It’s like the nightmare Orwellian version of political correctness or something, lol.
-Edit- This will probably be infracted for talking about infractions. Or, i’ll be infracted because you got infracted and I quoted your infraction. /rolleyes

Yea, I wonder why they have speed limits on the highway…100km? Are they treating us as kids ? I am an adult and I want to be free to drive the way I want. Don’t get me started on the limits in school areas too … they only care about the carebears.
Or the restrictions on smoking in public areas …. A little bit of passive smoking is not that dangerous after all. They might like it who knows. Or they should just go away, it’s my right as an adult to do what I want.
TLDR – You can have your fun as long as it does not hurt other people’s fun. You are not more important than any other player. Griefing other players is not allowed in GW2. Go play WoW, EVE or one of the other games that allow you to do that.
what to do. in each match up involving Maguuma, threads lock are the norm, so it must be them. they have the best forum warrior, but not on the battlefield though…..

Kitten talking is in a poor state. I mean, most of it is complete rubbish, devoid of any sense of humour or style. So much of it is the verbal equivalent of having some guy sitting next to you constantly poking you in the shoulder while going, “eh, eh, eh?” If I were a mod I’d delete most of it simply because of its rubbishyness, not even considering the ToS.
My impression is that trash talkers in video games are usually the least skilled ones who managed to kill you 10v1. I get the impression that trash talking is an American thing. Im from Australia and its considered poor form to talk trash. Im sure we have some who talk trash none the less. Also, I have found that more than often “trash talking” is used as an excuse for bad conduct, when there was obviously no positive intention from anything that was said.
Maguuma is a pretty friendly server that just likes to have fun. Part of fun is talking kitten to back it up. It’s like how <SPORTS EVENT> is more engaging when you have ego or money riding on it. GW2 is more interesting when you have some sort of trash talk on the line between communities.
I’ve partied with a lot of enemies and whispered to/by a lot of enemies, and they’ve all been positive experiences. A lot result in new friends, and a lot are how Mag slowly got transfers we wanted. I don’t know why people are so reluctant to type to other people in a game type that requires social interaction to function.

You can just use the identifier to whisper and ask for duels or team fights. One of the benefits of this forum is the identifier next to every post, so you might want to try it out~
Magrubma is a very proud server. If I (or someone in my party) kills a D/D Ele, Thief or Mesmer on Magrubma, chances are they will invite themselves to party to tell me how I lucky I got or how cheesy I am.
They’re generally nice when they settle down a little and we have a few more fights. In the past couple weeks I’ve had like 14 people added in contacts from Magrubma from some good fights etc. It’s nice to run into each other randomly on the field occasionally and whether we win or lose, we generally wave and whisper each other to say hello (and probably jump on each others bodies)
Some people get really, really mad though. I don’t really need rage whisper spam – I encourage friendly competition (and banter) but there is a line that can be crossed.

You see it as tribes and nations battling.
But I see it as 3 teams competing against each other. In the end, it’s just a game; score doesn’t matter; winning is just a strike in the score card; and transfers are just “trades”.

Ha. So true.
I fully agree with the OP. I certainly participate in the trash talking and would like for my posts to stop getting deleted and to stop getting infractions. I haven’t even seen any real hostility, just competitors spicing things up a bit. There’s absolutely no reason not to allow it. I think Anet wants to keep things ‘casual’ friendly, but that’s unnecessary here because casuals don’t go to forums in the first place. Just being here means you are more into the game than the vast majority of the player base.
Anet doesn’t/hasn’t lock a thread for someone saying Maguuma is awesome and we have used some great strategies.
I had a post deleted and received an infraction for saying Maguuma was the best pvp server. Honest to god, not leaving anything out or making anything up. I think the exact words were “Maguumans are the undisputed pvp champions.” Nothing else in the post. And it got deleted and I got punished because the mod said I was being rude.

Around 2003-4 they got all PG-13 too and a lot of the fun ceased (…well it ceased temporarily in between bans for me most of the time), eventually they sold out and the whole place imploded. Which was sad as many of my friends really only used that place to talk about MMO games and are no longer contactable, they fired up another site but I couldn’t be bothered putting up with the same mods.
Think most of my message box was full of ‘You are banned’ and ‘yes I thought your post was kind of funny, but you can’t say that about other user’s moms.’

What a rare insight into the mind of internet trolls. I should make notes here!
Flaming on a forum is like not washing yourself. You do it not necessarily to harm others but they have to sit in your stench anyways. OF COURSE normal people get protected from trolls by banning them jeeez.
Most interesting is that the majority of trolls all seem to come from a single country, as others have also mentioned.

Guess that sums it.
For these so called “hardcore PvPers” (I doubt they are more than trolls – see how they mostly play flavor of the month thieves and D/D eles), calling someone names and saying stuff about their mothers “is not griefing”. Says something about their age.
Apparently we should just opt out (of the official game forums I think it’s what he means) if we don’t like it. Smart. Kinda like a smoker saying “if you don’t want to inhale my smoke just stay away from me”.
How many other large scale MMOs have such a strict “no griefing policy ?” None that I know and I’m thankful for that. It’s our last refuge against the “internet toughs” that get their kicks by anonymously annoying other people. And now they want to turn it into the same cesspool that many other so called “competitive” PvP games have become.
Oh, I forgot to add a Lol at the end of my post. Seems it’s a l33t thing to do.

i’m not a smoker, but i’m not going to judge a smoker for doing it outside or in a smoking zone. I wouldn’t mind if they setup a special WvW section on these forums with more loose rules, and less moderation.
doesn’t that solve everyone’s complaints?

I’m not arguing that we shouldn’t obey the rules, I’m just saying that the rules seem to pigeonhold us into getting infracted… I mean, this is a very intense, competitive game mode. Like any sport, I feel as if we should be able to trash talk and show our pride.
I would love the rules for this forum to be laxed or reviewed.
Unfortunately more companies are starting to run their forums like this. Heavily moderating them and sheltering people. There’s a point when you moderate adequately and effectively. Then there’s how they do it here and go way over the top. They go after anything that could be even slightly seen as offensive. Like others have said you don’t have to read anything in here at all. If you can’t handle some words get off the internet.
Most forums I don’t mind too much, but they have irritated me here by over moderating. You could put your money and effort elsewhere. I don’t know if anyone else notices this, but if you compare forums and game chat over time you will see in situations like this many people refuse to use any of the open lines of communication because the moderating is absurdly over the top. We need an alternative if they want to continue with their rules.
Like I said above if you can’t handle words get off the internet.
Commander
You can still trash talk here. You just need to be smart to get around it.
Out-sourced moderation.
That is all.

Honestly i feel like the mods can CRY MOAR a lot of the time – wvw is highly competitive, and not only does it feel good to vent or QQ or gloat (even more so when your guild has consistently gone up against other guilds), but it enhances the whole experience of fighting for a server – who gives a hoot who youre fighting if they are just a faceless enemy, but when you know that the person that you just killed was from that guild that you saw kitten talking on the forums its great.
Personally i love to kitten talk Mag and FA, and i love it when you guys kitten talk back – its all part of the experience and really makes the experience, for me atleast.

Tl;dr – kitten talking is fun. Let us have fun. Or not. Thanks.
There were a lot of good points brought up back and forth.
The reality is, it is good for players and people to vent, either from victory or defeat. And in some cases, polite and even playful poking builds bonds.
The downside is.
We have a Large Community: That means you have people on all ends of the spectrum, and that means you don’t really know who are talking to. They could have the toughness of rice paper, or they could be made of concrete. They could treat this game like a passing fling, or they could treat it like it was the only thing that mattered in their life. There is just much disparity in a faceless forum name, to really know what you are dealing with. This means what one may see as harmless joking another might see a grievous offence. What one might see as inconsequential another might treat as violating a sacred law.
Now, I try to joke with people, and respond to how they respond, and think that is what they want. This is not always a good procedure which brings me to my next point.
GlassCannons and StealthTanks: Now after 20 years of posting on forums, I have got to say, If everyone was built the same way, IE: if everyone’s offence was the same as their defense, we would not have as much in the way of problems on forums in general. The problem is, they are not.
Now, across about a dozen forums, some with rules, some without, what I have seen is that, Glasscannnons vastly outnumber anyone else, which means people come to a forum ready to dish out, but not prepared to take it. In fact this site, Flame Warrior really hits home for a good analogy of what you anyone could be dealing with on any day in the life of a forum poster.
So you get people that start to prod and poke, and when they get prodded and poked back, they get offended and turn hostile. In that case, yah, rules are good, better to have them then to let that kind of anarchy set in.
Accountability and Responsibility This tends to be the largest issue for anyone, across any walk of life and in any situation
I work in security, and the number of times I have had anyone admit to doing something wrong, I could count on two fingers, because I need two fingers to form a zero.
And it’s not just me, I mean, from the cop that has to deal with every speeder that won’t admit to speeding, to the computer tech that needs to hear about how the person did nothing, when they hand them a halfway and badly done reassembled tower. It’s everyone, everywhere, everyday that has to deal with rules, and the mods on a forum will not be an exception to this.
In fact, In the last 3 games I played, there would normally be a no rules off site forum, and lo and behold, the people with the biggest mouths on the main forum would be there complain about getting infractions, blaming the mods and the other posters, normally calling them names, demanding retribution and blood for their infraction/ban, etc, never once pausing to reflect that maybe they were the one to make the mistake. I personally don’t have any respect for those kinds of people, just me. When something goes wrong in my life, I don’t go looking to blame someone else.
Anyone watch the Shawshank Redemption? it seems on every forum I am on, I’m “the only guilty man in Shawshank”
Normally, when people get infractions, they tend to lash out at the poster they feel wrong them because they are not willing to look at themselves, (never mind the fact that their infraction or banning came from a third party, that reviewed their antics and placed them in the wrong) they of course accuse the other posters, normally, I laugh at this, but, I had one guy on another game of mine, who literally after getting an infraction, went an flagged every post I made on the forums in an act of retaliation to get me banned, and the result of that childish display was they got banned for harassing me. What dis they do? That’s right, they went to an off site forum and blamed me for getting them banned.
So yah. There are some real winners out there, and hard rules with good enforcers, help them go away.
Conclusion as a Company, it is an obligation to keep things proper, so when you know as a company, and a moderator, that is what you will be dealing with, there really is no benefit to relax the rules. It is better to keep the rules tight, taught and let the people who enjoy more loose rules can make their own site, or move off to another site and do their own thing.
I think, if Magumma enjoys trash talking they would profit greatly from perhaps having their own WvW Spat/Trash talk forum, who knows, you might get some people from the other worlds to kick it up with you, but normally, official sits and forums are not the place for that, too many kinds of people here.

I’m glad GW2 implements a relatively high standard on their forums. Kitten talking and QQ’ing do no good to anyone. Competition is great, but not when people feel the need to put down others to make themselves feel bigger and better.
As a rule of thumb, forum warriors generally claim one or all of the following;
- They are the best and everyone else are noobs
- They only lost cause they were outnumbered 10v1 (when in reality it was probably 2v1)
- 3 of them beat 20 people (generally, if not always, this is an exaggerated number)
All three of these general claims of forum warriors require putting down an opposing player. I don’t want to be harsh, but it is childish behaviour. “Hardcore” gamers should chill out if this game makes them angry or gives them a need to flame, all things should be done in moderation, including GW2. I’m not trying to target forum warriors here, but it is generally these gamers that are rude and unpleasant to others, and if their posts get removed then I would bet money on Anet that it was for a legit reason they removed it.
To the OP, I understand most players have a sense of pride for their servers, and there is nothing wrong with health competition, so long as players are respectful and don’t go overboard (yet again, forum warriors more often than less go overboard). This is just my opinion.
I’m sure posts are removed for legitimate reasons, per the ToS, I just think the ToS is too strict.
