The best role?
Skirmishing.
Bunker rangers can still roll people 1v1 so I’d start by running supply/picking off reinforcements. Kill ALL the cows.
In bigger fights(I’m bunker btw) I stick more to the fringes. My build has crazy passive health regen and evades out the wazoo so I can wade into the zerg drop some fields and pop back out.
My build is also a terrific medic. Dropping a heal spring at the right time or location can be a game changer.
Just use your strengths really. Trap rangers can toss out nasty fields left and right, bunkers can harass and destroy people who even get slightly separated.

Being useless and gorgeous. Sometimes you can go to enemy’s spawn and run around for couple of minutes before they start killing you.

Placing rams anywhere besides gates. Spelling with rams, farming with rams, building shrines for rams…
Suicide-commander.
If you have 100 gold to spare, you can buy yourself a commander icon, which gives you the power to lead zergs from cliffs. Kinda awesome, but works only two-three times.
Rangers can remove 3 conditions every 10 seconds, not too shabby and with a bunker build the passive health regen can negate burning/bleeding entirely.
No control? Right now I have a stun, cripple, 2 poisions, and fear. Not nearly the best but capable.
The no escape one is just not true. I have 6 evades to use before I have to worry about cooldowns. Lightning reflexes and 2 on sword should be enough to get away from anyone other than dd ele or maybe a thief.
I haven’t even mentioned the amazing entangle. ApE root with significant bleed? Yes please.
I’m honestly amazed someone would say ranger is weak 1v1. Outside of thieves, I feel like I have the advantage 1v1.
