Q:
So…
Tarnished Coats wins pratically ALL matches against Fort Aspenwood (the current score is like 21-2 or so).
But with the current scores this week, FA is juming over TC in the ranking, because FA got to play against the 7th & 8th ranked server and wins big.
How is that fair? How is it possible that a FA always loses against TC and still can jump over TC in the ranking?
This ranking system is very unfair, it should be impossible that a server jumps over another server when they always lose against that server.

Does anyone actually care about the glicko rankings? Huh. I’m here for fights, and they show up no matter what your glicko score is.
The Rating system is just broken, forget it even exists.
1500 fighting during peak hours matters less than having 50 vs. 20 players on at night.

But that’s match scoring which is broken, Glicko is another matter.
Glicko take the broken match scoring and try to build a ranking, if scoring would not be so broken it may work better.
But in any case do not give to much on milleniums ranking predition before monday/tuesday. Weekends are special and at the beginning when total scores are still small, relative small score differences produce large glicko evolutions.
the rating system is pretty good at dividing up the servers by their populations so we dont get crap like bg/et/ar or silly matches
theres no actual competition with being the highest ranking, no rewards or anything… its just a measure of server population. and there wont be anything significant cuz until anet overhauls their population distributions or point tallies, a servers skill is just white noise compared to its population. so just ignore ratings. theyre just math to make decent matches.
The only time the rating matters is at the end of the week. Give the matches some time to play out before freaking out about rating. I just checked the scores and TC is back ahead of FA.
As insanemaniac mentions, it’s designed to be a relative score to insure that servers that are going to be more competitive float around each other. If this match-up, points-wise, continues how it is, then the system as a whole is designed to slingshot FA forward more in an attempt to try to make it not happen again.
Anyone on FA who talks trash about their Glicko being higher than TC’s doesn’t understand what he/she is talking about and can be ignored anyway, so don’t worry so much about it.
lol this thread is a good one
For all the criticism Glicko gets, it has done a pretty good job of grouping servers for more even opponents. The reason you saw a temporary bump of FA over TC was TC is facing SoS, and you looked during reset night in the middle of their strongest time (IE TC was underperforming vs a lower ranked server).
You need to let the Glicko play out! If you lose or let SoS almost win this week, then yes, you could be in trouble. With how strong FA is becoming this seems like a pretty good assessment to me. I expect you will maintain a slight lead over FA for now.
I just checked the scores and TC is back ahead of FA.
Oh thank God!
here’s the thing. glicko just plain isn’t designed for what they’re using it for. it assumes a 1v1, with relatively static variables. with a 1v1v1, where many many people can play during one week and not show up the next, it’s impossible for glicko to be accurate. the point system they used for the seasons was actually more accurate and had much faster responses to changes.
they could go with an identical point based system, but have it track back 10 weeks. as each new week started, the oldest week could be erased. the rankings would work out to be about the same as they are now, but more accurate in terms of immediate changes.

new to WvW?
Rankings don’t mean kitten when you know you’re stronger than them. If FA gains enough score and end up getting matched up in T1, they’ll lose a lot of score again (unless by some weird thing, T2 actually is balanced against T1). It balances itself out.

No, not new to WvWvW.
First, in case you didn’t know, the probability that the number 4 server ends up against T1 servers is only 5%. That’s not even once in 4 months. It’s hardly something you can use as an argument to balance things out.
And TC fought T1 servers in the golden league (because we did not drop a tier on purpose to avoid those servers, thank-you-very-much), so I know about the effect that they have on the T2 servers.
But that’s not the point. The point is not ‘will a server lose ranking when fighting against a T1 server’.
The point is that when a server consistently beats another server, the scoring should reflect that and has the consistently-winning server higher rated than the consitently-losing server.
I just checked the scores and TC is back ahead of FA.

thank Glicko too

No it’s 0% (impossible) since several weeks and it will remain 0% as long as rank 3 nd rank 4 are 160 (or more) pts apart.

Where did you get that info? I never saw a reference to the odds being determined by the points, just the tabel where it’s determined by the ranks.
But I admit, I don’t read the DEV posts religiously anymore, so i might have missed that one.

We discussed it after it got anounced in the news-blog: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Need-Anet-to-clarify-Matchup-Variance-Maths
And Ken’s weekly probability estimation you can find now here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Matchup-wishlist/3511398
