Q:
HAPPY? Happy that for the last 4-5 weeks you have deliberately tanked matches to scrape into Silver League in time for the Season 1 start, that now due to delays you have to continue to tank for another 2+ weeks. How is your WvW community managing to stay happy. Any rifts forming? Any raging?
Ye I’m looking at you Desolation
How are you managing to keep your WvW community happy. I’d love to here how your council/elders/community, whatever they call themselves pulled this one off. Your fooling no one with your quest to get into Silver League <3

Care to confirm/deny such rumours, from the outside looking in, it’s quite obvious. Or are you another Blacktide in the making, plummeting to the abyss of Tiers 8 and 9.
I’m also very interested in this subject. I’d like to see an ANet response about this. If I’m correct match fixing is against the rules. Is ANet looking into this? If it finds a server trying to tank their matches to get into an “easy” league are they going to take action? What would the punishment be? I’d like to see server forfeit any winnings they may get for that season personally.
And the ‘tankers’ could say they were busy with life, or ‘enjoying’ pve or playing a different game.
Not to mention some servers are losing guilds so they obviously will drop ranks.
Tanking can’t be proven because this isn’t a sport career/team, it is a game, where what a player does and participates in can change in a blink.
Even in professional sport it can’t really be proven, Google “Melbourne football club tanking saga” (Australia). In the end they were charged with ‘bringing the game into disrepute’, not with ‘tanking’. Personal opinion: they weren’t tanking, just an incredibly terrible team in terms of the people managing it, coaching, and playing for them.

This. It’s easy to tank without even trying: just log in a bit less, play for shorter amounts of time, quit when you’re tired instead of staying to check why that tower/camp has swords.
In the lower tiers, just a few nightcrew people being vigilant in the BL’s can prevent a couple flipped camps from snowballing into a couple flipped towers to a couple flipped keeps.
FFXIV is out, other games are out. People are playing other games because they’re sick of WvW or just want to try those games out. There may be some groups trying to tank the matches but don’t lump everyone in the same boat.

wikipedia:Throughout the AFL’s investigation into Melbourne’s 2009 season, three matches in particular were investigated:
Round 17, 2009 vs Sydney Swans: Coach Dean Bailey made seven changes to the team that was defeated by Geelong by 46 points the previous week. In the match, Melbourne made 67 interchange rotations, down from its season average of 85.
Round 18, 2009 vs Richmond: Richmond came from three goals behind to win a very close match by four points after Jordan McMahon kicked the match winning goal after the final siren. During the match, coach Dean Bailey placed several players in unusual positions. These included placing ruckman Paul Johnson and midfielder James McDonald in the backline; playing forward Brad Miller in the ruck; placing defenders James Frawley and Matthew Warnock in the forward line, as well as leaving Russell Robertson and Colin Sylvia out of the game for Michael Newton and rookie Jake Spencer. The Herald Sun later accused Bailey of making these changes during the match in an attempt to throw the match.
Round 22, 2009 vs St Kilda: Dean Bailey moved James Frawley off St Kilda forward Nick Riewoldt, despite Frawley having limited Riewoldt’s effect on the game; he shifted Lynden Dunn onto Riewoldt, and Riewoldt kicked three goals before Frawley was re-assigned to him; by that time, Melbourne was in a position where it was unable to win the match. Additionally, Liam Jurrah was benched in the third quarter despite kicking two goals; he did not return to the field until late in the final quarter.
they were tanking. everybody knows it. its just there wasnt strong evidence (as in, a videotape of the club owners and coachs talking about it openly).
I’m gonna laugh when they announce they’re going to use the ranks from two weeks ago.
can of worms opened.
pretty sure most servers have deliberately ‘taken it easy’ at some stage in wvw’s lifespan to drop tiers in the old system (gandara certainly has, piken did when you were on it if memory serves me correctly)
just because there’s some cosmetic reward now doesn’t mean desolation need to be singled out.
Ye I’m looking at you Desolation
You’re aiming at the wrong target. Desolation lost a significant part of its WvW guilds (again), and as usual, the casuals disappear as soon as we’re losing. The current ranking is an accurate reflection of Desolation’s current WvW population.
We will rebuild, as always. The server’s playerbase is huge meaning that one way or the other the WvW numbers will rise again in the next weeks.

How convenient, sadly seems like this is going to be a reality. Once Deso reach silver its safe to presume their farm community will blossom once again in wvw and will take over the tier.
Desolation guilds – Far Shiverpeaks are recruiting, don’t Easy Mode silver league, balance it out.

There is nothing convenient about it but if the dev WvW team keeps stubbornly avoiding the elephant in the room i.e. the matchup balance issue, and instead keeps adding stuff which makes it even worse, this will keep happening until WvW as a game mode permanently dies.
And fairweathers only showing up when the server wins are certainly not a Desolation exclusive, it’s just that Deso being the biggest PvE server in EU amplifies the consequences. We had 170+ players in TS for killing Tequatl at 1AM, guess what happens whenever you can convince them to show up in WvW. But with how things are right now, you can only move them away from the Frostgorge farm if you can entice them with a karma farm, since anything else in WvW is pretty much useless as far as rewards go.
Hey guys,
I really do like Desolation, in my honest opinion the only upper bracket server that was fun to fight against and were people were roaming wvw to actually improve their skills and eventually master their classes.
But I have to say I find your recent drop in tranks a bit too drastic to be not forced upon. Kodash at one time lost all its big wvw guilds and commanders, but we still hovered around the same brackets/places for months with similar point ticks.
When I recall correctly we were matched just 5 weeks ago (when deso internal disputes were already affecting wvw heavily according to what I heared from desos) and we were no match for you, despite you being focused heavily by the matchup`s favorite, the third server – and we are place 9, now.
To me, if Deso goes silver league it is guaranteed that you will just steamroll through it and take first place with absolute ease. No offense intended, just what I predict will happen.
Personally I don`t like that too too much, because I remember deso nightshift is pretty beasty while the server is maintaining a strong daytime presence, and no server (imo) from place 6-7 downwards can compete with that.
But time will tell, good luck anyways.
I think anet did quite a good job balancing:
You forget AG is just behind you in servers population and PVE concentration, and currently, we cannot even use our server TS because it is full due to Teq. We have also seen much bigger crashes to our wvw community. The difference being that mid tier is much saner, based on variety, consistency and skill, over the “community of the masses” going on in tier one. Top tier server have been inflated balloons for a long time. Anet sure did not pop any of you guys with the changes, but Desolation as it seems got deflated first.

Desolation is not tanking anything. 90% of the WvW guilds have either moved or quit. Dropping tier very logical under these circumstances.
This is not an official reply, just my personal opinion and observations:
Desolation managed to make an amazing come back after losing over 1500 dedicated WvWvW players and 10 hard core guilds in Spring 2013. After the mass exodus of Spring 2013 we were basically a spvp/tpvp and pve server. Now that the pvp is dwindling to obscurity due bad game balance and players getting bored of the slow pace of changes, Desolation is more or less just the pve capital of EU.
After mass exodus Desolation hasn’t gotten any major influx of players from other servers. Except for FG, which returned to Desolation from Piken. FG has now left Desolation again for Gunnar’s Hold. We basically just trained new players and commanders from our huge pve population. Several dedicated people worked their kitten off to rebuild our WvWvW community. We got new forums, server wide TS. But you can imagine all this hard work lead to burn out.
I am not the only Desolation player, who feels extremely unhappy of the direction Arenanet is taking WvWvW. All the changes in past 5 months have made WvWvW more imbalanced and less fun to play: totally unneeded buffs to Arrow Carts, overpowered WXP traits, account bound WXP, borderland changes, especially the borderland stat buffs and points from stomping. The worst thing was the timing of the leagues + introducing several power creeps (ascended weapons) and massive easy sources of pve farming (Orr farming, Queen’s gauntlet + Pavilion etc). That together launched another mass exodus. Desolation can still have multiple overflows in pve areas to farm events. That is where the players are!
Our morning coverage has always been close to pathetic, but our prime time has also been often exaggerated by our enemies. While we enjoy the outnumbered “buff” most of the time (clearly showing that we have less players the other 2 servers) we have still often managed to capture enemy keeps with concentrated well-timed efforts. Forum threads tell this and this Desolation guild with 40-50 people, while anybody on our side could see that that guild had 20 or 25 people in the TeamSpeak and 5 of them were AFK at the spawn point. Now past 6 weeks have already been almost nothing but outnumbered, except for reset night, pain train and some guild raids, which usually last just 2-3 hours. With 90% of time being outnumbered by even rank 15 enemy servers, don’t you expect our rating to drop?
Our realistic non-night time numbers are close to a rank 15-16 server or so. Without the big influx of points from night time our rating would have been much lower.
We haven’t had any major NA player group or base to do night capping. Basically just some of our most dedicated players were staying up at night and going to bed in the morning. Now those many of those players are at Piken. Now look how close Piken’s rating is with Vizunah if you do not believe the importance of night time coverage:
http://mos.millenium.org/eu
Many players, including some Desolation players, think that Desolation will utterly steamroll the silver league. I beg to differ. Without night force and our current numbers we will have a lot of trouble to get even bronze medal in silver league. But it is possible that the players come back from pve. Silver should be better for roamers. We still got some truly amazing commanders and roamers, humor left in the TeamSpeak.
Now I hope several things would happen:
1. Arenanet will revert all the changes made to WvWvW in past 5 months
2. We can rebuild our WvWvW community in the silver league
