The solo roamer?
When i want to do something solo on WvW, i alway roll my d/d elementalist. No one can beat them when we talk about mobility. With proper build/gear, it’s very hard to kill and deals nice ad sustainable damage.
Take a look at this playlist if you want some video of a very top d/d ele : http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLttydQxkm4qudK4xJT3_UvJ0ekkwq5lIH
Thief or Ele imo
My guardian (hammer build) can solo camps. But it is still slow enough damage where I run risk of getting run over.
have you gotten the mesmer to 80 and equipped exotics? Doesnt matter what build you run really
I play a mesmer and solo roam every now and then. Good fights are hard to come by depending on what server you’re on but mesmer is a good class to run around by yourself. Here’s one video of me running around solo, I have a few more. You just need the right spec and gear.
my mesmer is 80 and full exotics except the acessories, waiting on ascended but i get run over no matter what i do =(
Thief and D/D Ele are by far the best solo roamers. You need stealth or very high mobility in order to avoid the zergs and find smaller fights.
Mesmer though is right up there at endgame. If you use most the stelath skills as well as blink you can juke good. Also get used to binding the 180 button and then use Staff#2 for movement. Also you can go hang out at the EB Jump Puzzle and be a demigod.

Hate to not post a link but if you check the mesmer forums for anything by Osicat youll be amazed at how a well versed mesmer can do pretty much anything. Just takes practice.
Engineer are surprisinly good solo roamer!
I have been solo roaming with mine for 1-2 weeks, hunting the zerg.
I’m using a modified 100nade build using slick shoes. Slick shoes is really good to escape the zerg. Hit and run.
Also if you get swarmed by 3-4 player in melee range, pop slick shoe, stun them all and 100nade combo them. You can insta kill 2-3 of them.
You die pretty fast tho if you miss your dodge/escape/defensive cd.
You can also use the five gauge build, Elixir S is better then slick shoe over all, but is lacking the escape abilities again a zerg.

Woah, really, mesmers are great 1v1.
Roaming wise, they are not particularly good; not because they cant win the fights but they cant make a stealthy getaway when required due to their lack of swiftness and movement speed. Sure blink and focus can work but only for so long. Youll encounter groups no matter what and a successful roamer is the one that knows how to pick its fights.
You want roamer, go thief or ele. Both have amazing escape abilities. But know that a mesmer can beat either. Especially one that spams confusion wink
For solo roaming id have to say go with theif just because you can choose your fights and very rarely will you ever get run over because of stealth
Solo roaming as a Mesmer is fun. A zerg will crush you and a 5-man will probably kill you but you can win 1v1 or even 1v3.
The problem with solo roaming though is that you aren’t really helping to do anything constructive for your team on the map.

when i solo roam i go for yaks, and take camps, so kinda is constructive but i like to chase down ppla nd 1v1… maybe ill try theif
ive noticed that none of the class ive played yet really match my playstyle
Have you considered warrior?
I know a lot of people have suggested theifs and D/D elementalists, but I didn’t really like the playstyle of either of those classes.
With warrior, you have a few options.
I personally run with GS/Hammer and I’ve won more often than not. When I did lose it had more to do with my own failure during the encounter, whet but her it was a mistimed dodge or a miss on one of my cc abilities.
With signet of rage active, you get a baseline 33second swiftness, and if you are careful with your travelling, you can swap warhorn in/out for the swiftness to extend your duration, while using the GS rush and whirlwind abilities to cover distance.
I’ve got around 1000hours on my warrior with 26k kills and around 2700deaths.(most from falling lol).
As far as Guardian goes, they seem really strong in the melee department, but their ranged defense/offense seems like a major weakness. With that Being said, I am leveling up a guardian to see how it pans out!

If you look at the stats sheet on exotics, jewelry actually trumps armor for any sort of DPS build. When you’re acquiring exotics on a piece by piece basis, weapon first, jewelry second, armor last.

There’s an excellent thread in the Mesmer forums that shares some good tips and tricks for WvWing on a mesmer (with videos). I highly advise looking at this thread before completely scrapping the idea of playing a mesmer in WvW.

If you’re getting crushed you’re not doing it right :P
You should be able to 1v1 or 1v2 fairly easily.
The only classes that annoy me are other well played mesmers and tanky D/D eles

One bonus I’d like to mention is that of all the whining people do about thieves, it’s their turn when it comes to whining about shatter mesmer builds.
The thought of being able to take most no-skill FotM D/D thieves from 100 to 0 in a quarter second should be enough to make anyone smile.

The sad part is the other 3 players could be your exact skill level and none of this outcome would change.
The stealth and clones mechanic needs so much work.
If I’m on my warrior and a thief or mesmer tries to 1v1 me I just exit stage left. Why waste everyones time. If I do win it’s because the thief or the mesmer is terrible and I don’t really feel good about the win.
If a warrior beats someone in 1v1 it’s because they are either really bad or the warrior is working 300% harder than they are.

D/D eles can be tough. I came upon one at a supply camp who had just soloed all the NPCs. I engaged her and we had a good 1v1 fight. It was looking like it would come down to the last hit (or the first to royally mess up). But 1 other team mate of mine showed up and we finished her off. Such is the life of open warfare. I still wonder how that fight would have gone if noone else showed up.
I don’t usually come across much 1v1 though. If I am solo I usually run into an enemy group, or eventually run into a small group of teammates I end up hanging out with.

I fart in your general direction
The thing about being a solo roamer is, you really have to be very good. Its not really enough to roll the flavor of the month and expect to go kick butt the first night. Keep going out there getting beat and challenging yourself to win with greater odds and I think you will start surviving more and more. I play a ranger, so I’m sort of doubly hurt but I survive and win far more wondering around solo now than I used to.

I would consider a solo roamer to be perhaps more aware of what’s going on in the map, than an F8 autoattacker running with the zerg. I wouldn’t be so quick to say a solo roamer is doing little to help their team. Especially when they could provide advanced scouting tips, take check points for distractions, and stop would be zerger stragglers from joining the masses.
The stealth and clones mechanic needs so much work.
As a mesmer, it’s real easy to prey on those who still have autotarget and melee assist enabled. That’s part of the clones “problem,” anyway.

thief, hands down. Perma stealth, highest dps in the game, best mobility. not even close.
You have to get a feel of roaming solo you can do it as a mesmer my main use to be mesmer you just have to run a different loadout. When I roamed solo it was sword/torch but I found later Staff to be much more superior in helping to get away than Great sword also you can go with something like x/torch and x/focus which are the best to get away.. You also need to maybe trait manipulation skills range increase to get farther away on blink.
It is totally possible to solo roam on a mesmer you just need to get a feel for when to go in and when to get out. You don’t have to but I know solo roaming mesmer that like to go 6 piece rune of centaur for the extra swiftness.
Just look up shattercat on youtube and you will see plenty of videos of a mesmer soloing in wvw he/she does it alot.

Except a thief specced for mobility >_>

Solo’ing a supply camp isn’t necessarily something to brag over. I do it all the time, on a ranger no less. Often a melee ranger at that. [Whirling Defense] is a thing of beauty, not only in application but in animation as well.

Really recommend that you stick with the mesmer as it’s an exceptional roaming class, the mobility isn’t quite as good as and elementalist or a thief, but if you build it right (centaur or air runes) and learn to use your skills (phase retreat) and terrain you can make a pretty quick getaway.
I’d say the elementalist leans more towards versatility, while the thief leans towards damage, but you can get both if you play your mesmer well. You have tons of options for avoiding and for dealing damage. While thieves can down opponents quickly, they struggle with tougher classes and have a harder time soloing a camp. A mesmer can burst and maintain pressure on an opponent, meaning that you can disappoint and instantly destroy the glassiest thief and beat down the most bunker guardian with one build.
I wouldn’t recommend the guardian, their hardiness is useful in group fights but they have limited options for high damage and their survival skills do not help for escaping on your own.

Then you don’t know how WvW works. While the 30 zerg is hitting it’s head against the front gates, your roamers are taking yaks out in the back so that the siege damage from the zerg will actually mean something.
And soloing a supply camp is about the most efficient you can do in WvW. Imagine converting a small zerg of 10 into seasoned roamers and then flipping every camp and stopping every yak on the map in 5 minutes (theoretically).
A good roamer is much more valuable than a zergling. It’s just that with the WvW reward system, zergs get much more rewards/kills/karma.
A lot of classes can roam with 1v1 builds but thief and d/d ele seem to do it best. Here’s a couple videos of my thief roaming from the last 2 weeks.
I forgot to add roamers are the eyes and ears for where enemy zergs are, scouting their siege and spotting for yours, first responders to Xs on camps and towers, and any other small objectives (quaggen nodes etc…)
You should be reporting information on enemy zergs to everyone else on the map and/or voice chat.
I just wish WvW promoted roaming more than zerging. There are times when over an hour or two, the only people I see are either in 10s, 20s or 30s… Maybe 1 or 2 5 groups if I’m lucky.
Thief and ele best roamers
Mesmer is ok in 1v1, but not as good as thief, ele or ranger when it comes to “fair” duel on open field. Mesmers excel in areas that have lots of cover though, such as the ruins near the blue keep. In “unfair” fights we are almost as good as thieves, mainly because of our high burst.

Mesmers are great 1v1, one of the best. The problem with a mesmer roaming (and guardian too) is they have no mobility since roaming isn’t actually about 1v1. You need to be able to pick your fights.
Guardian 100%.
Don’t play whimpy classes that run away when things get hairy: Fight or go home!

The problem with solo roaming though is that you aren’t really helping to do anything constructive for your team on the map.
That’s simply not true. A solo roamer can:
— scout enemy positions to check siege, fortification, # of defenders, and supply
— kill enemy supply yaks
— kill enemy roamers trying to ambush supply yaks
— contest enemy waypoints
— create diversions
— report positions and strength of enemy groups
— spot for team mates firing trebs and mortars
— run supply
— drop/build offensive siege in hidden spots in advance of an attack
— solo dredge, ogre, etc camps
If you think any of those are not constructive you must have a very limited view of WvW tactics.
Stormbluff Isle [AoD]
A guardian can take camps solo without much trouble and they are strong in 1v1 or even 2v1 but they do not make for good solo roamers due to lack of mobility. Ele is probably the best right now but they are going to be nerfed in an upcoming patch so who knows.
