Make WvW Eventful! – WvW, 4 years in
Yes, I have 5 lv 80 mesmers – Funny Puns
Lack of support and seemingly lack of guidance from ANet
I’ll put this on top because this is the main reason you see so many bitter and spoiled childs in these forums.
Since even before the game was launched, ANet seemed to consider WvW as a “bridge” between PvE and (s/t)PvP: they never really acknowledged the game mode as something that people would be primarily interested in, even when the GvG scene was growing and WvW guilds and streamers had 10x the viewers than PvP (eSPOOOOOORTSSSSSSS).
Things went even worse after ANet removed the matchup forums and after a developer was recorded on a video interrupting a GvG and badmouthing players that were not playing the game mode “the way it was meant to”.
ANet failed to meet WvW players hopes and expectations times and times again. Remember this post from Devon Carver? It’s been over 2 years and WvW is pretty much in the same state it was back then. Actually, if possible, it is in a worse state.
Megaservers did a lot of good to the game, but at the same time ANet failed to provide alternative means for servers to call for reinforcements when needed and the lack of a “server hub” made it really hard for WvW guilds to recruit new players. All this has been merrily handed off to third party websites that are scarcely updated most of the time.
Combined with the introduction of the Edge of the Mists map that provides far better rewards and an endless stream of badges, karma and loot, this helped shrink the WvW population even faster.
The most recent shunning of WvW (excluding the Golem week) has been the changes to the network code to help (s/t)PvP lag that ANet admitted they knew it would give problems to WvW players, and still they went with it. Because ESPOOOOOOOOOORTSSSSSS. As a result, WvW map cap has been lowered.
Server population imbalance and matchups
The most prominent issue that has been acknowledged from ANet since the start of the game and never been addressed is server population imbalance and how it affects the ladder and matchup system. The situation is so bad that we have some servers where the population “enjoys” hours long queues, while most of the bronze league servers are barren wastelands.
After the introduction of megaservers for PvE, it doesn’t make sense to have servers for WvW. And it never made sense at all to base the transfer cost on the total population!
The current Point-per-tick/Coverage-rules-it-all system creates unbalanced matchups and ANet is not giving the players tools and incentives to address this.
A system of alliances instead of servers has been discussed in CDI and other threads in the WvW forums months ago, but we didn’t hear anything else about it. At the moment we don’t know if it’s being worked on, so this issue remains open without an end in sight.
Getting rid of the servers would also require to change the game mode so that defending objectives becomes actually fun and rewarding. Otherwise all maps would become an endless – boring – karma train.
Rewards
WvW is probably the least rewarding activity in game. I’m not only talking about the abysmal amount of gold-per-hour compared to PvE or even PvP with the reward tracks, I’m talking about how it doesn’t feel rewarding to flip a T3 keep after a 3 hours siege. You get your puny amount of silver and karma from the event and that’s it. It doesn’t feel rewarding to defend – heavily outnumbered – one of your towers. It doesn’t feel rewarding at all to win a matchup.
It feels way more rewarding to play as a zombie following a zerg in EOTM, karma training all day long, than doing a meaningful job of flipping camps and killing enemy dolyaks in the borderlands or EB.
And what about bragging rights? Our achievements and titles are broken since nearly 3 years now. Will these ever be fixed? Will we ever get titles or maybe even shiny skins for our efforts or is that only intended for PvE and (s/t)PvP players?
Lack of dedicated class balance
As we know, class balance for GW2 is made with (s/t)PvP in mind. This means that changes like the one that affected Stability are tested to work in a tiny environment compared with the huge battles you can see in WvW. Also, some builds can become exceedingly effective due to gear mixing and food buffs in WvW.
Siege wars are broken (and not fun)
Although some progress has been made on this account, siege wars are still completely broken and not fun.
… and there’s probably a lot more I can’t think of right now.
Blobs
I think most WvW players are crossing their fingers and hoping the new map will actually put an end to the blobs. Right now, blobbing is way too efficient, giving insane bonuses in combat due to positive-feedback and easily covering the whole map in only a few minutes so it can defend everything.
Access to gear/stat combos
Although some vague promises were made about having access to more stat combos on the WvW gear, we’re still stuck with only a handful of choices, while access to some stat combos (for example Celestial and Sinister) require a lot of PvE and crafting to get hold of. And let’s not talk about how rare the ascended drops are in WvW. I had like… probably one armor piece and two or three rings in over 2500 ranks. If I were doing fractals I would have been swimming in ascended stuff by now.
Ah, 3 years down the road I’m still hoping I can get back some of the upgrades from my WvW gear. Maybe it’s time you make it salvageable?
+1
Nailed it, well thought out and worded.
100% right dear mate, kudos!
You should also add that some runes are prohibitively expensive with alternatives being either not very cheap or sometimes require you to PvE a fair bit to get. For example nightmare runes, hoelbrak, strength etc.
That’s without mentioning ones you can’t get any more like generosity or the recipes aren’t around like tormenting and perplexity which also require items which are hard to get.
Good ideas. Thx for still caring.
Respect
Clear thinking, excellent recall (research) and said everything I wish I had .. better
Needs to be kept on the front page

Whoa! Careful there, don’t get too crazy.
I think stability change is a great thing in wvw because a small group can harm a large group.
And yea they should start fixing their game, like bugs, and after fix they should add new content. But unfortunately they will just add new content

And new bugs.
FULL RESPECT and agree with this post of glory.
I have also been unhappy with how difficult it is to defend the walls of a fortified structure in wvw, and effectively, giving the advantage to the attacker in most cases. Fully agree with the uselessness of the oil, and near-uselessness of the cannons vs large groups.
Unable to cast spells off the walls unless you jump up to the edge, unable to use your bow/rifle/staff effectively as well, despite the fact you have the height advantage. lol.
mortar placement is also not good..
And then this poorly thought out, badly executed dumb choice of an event. Sure, it starts up the hype-train for new players, but do they really need this kind of incentive? Why not keep the kitten events to PVE? =[
I’d say WVW has created the tightest knit communities on gw2, and anet just trashes that. They’re like LOLNOPE. So disappointed. wvw is really one of the major reasons i still play gw2.

I almost wish someone super duper smart could just mod this game mode, let whoever wants to play create a character insta 80 and pick free builds. Jump in to WvW and just play the game.. Remove Pvgate, Siege should have friendly fire so we have no more point blank catapults and trebs.. Remove golems or make them even harder to get a hold of, like keep upgrades or something. and nerf or remove disablers. and then fix more problems as it goes on through communicating with the PLAYERS on forums/in game.. or actually PLAYING the game mode for themselves.
Siege wars are broken (and not fun)
- There’s only a handful of places in the whole map where it makes sense to place a ballista
- Trebuchets were designed as the ultimate long-range attack weapon, they are used 90% of the time on short range behind the gates to destroy rams/alpha golems with no counter
These are the two things I don’t agree with – you can put ballis in plenty of places, in towers, on top of towers, in front of towers, on hills in front of towers or below towers.
Jerri, WC, Bravo and Langor are the only towers (on EB) where you can’t hit inner siege with an outer balli.
For trebs behind the door: You don’t have to counter them, go through the wall – a treb doesn’t help there. And that’s what I’m missing for a few months now, that people have to think in wvw.

Excellent posts by the OP. Well worth reading. I wish Arenanet developers would see this.
Agree with all this, and posting to keep it on the front page.
The game is actually broken. Getting hit by a 20k – 30k crit from people using the glitch with golem and static charge of engineers, is it how we have to appreciate WvW ? Who has this idea to do this crazy event ? It’s a huge non-sense from someone who probably never spend any time in actual WvW. It would be funny for 1 hours (with a fix of the glitches), but actually it’s pretty much broken and I don’t see any pleasure to play the game, as much people also feels that. Have fun with your 5 K-trains map, but me I’m done.
Its pretty sad to see the current state of WvW. I have some hope that the new map will bring in more players but with so much other content with HoT, it could be some time before that happens.
What happened to Devon Carver? Where is Joshua Davis, the competitive guy? We need people to be gathering feedback from WvW and GvG players on how to make this mode better on all front.
Like Menaka.5092 said. The rewards are pretty bad. Yeah the loot is so-so and you don’t really get anything for playing for an hour or so. Maybe a rare and a rank up chest. The feeling of reward is pretty low though. Taking upgraded structures or fighting off zergs for hours on end should feel more like an accomplishment, not just something to do.
I’m 100% for events like the golem rush during this drought-like times but only if they seem to actually be thoroughly tested. With the current buff exploit, it makes WvW not only unfair but unplayable. That in combination with the lag that never seems to end in EB or during 3 way fights should have been addressed better by now.
I like golems for the simple fact that when youre on an under populated servers you dont have enough people to actually build anything without multiple supply runs. that being said there should definitely be a cap of 2 to 3 golems per map period. 10 alphas can be through a gate on an upgraded keep before the swords even show. with a little balance they can still be impactfull and cool without being over powered. definitely not a fan of this golem event though. aside from that I agree with everything else in your posting.
I don’t remember this was it explicitly stated in that lag thread?
Posting for support. We need a true outline for the future of WvW as a game mode and we need it now. We have been playing to long and put to much time in to keep being ignored.
- Transfer prices for whole guilds are immense and based on skewed parameters. It should be free to transfer to bronze league servers, cheap to transfer to Silver league and very expensive to join the blob bandwagon in gold.
I’ve considered this for a while and while it could result in huge numbers of people moving to low servers and riding them up the tiers, at least it would mix things up a bit.
There aren’t enough risk/reward mechanics in the mode. The base rewards for capping paper’d stuff should be gutted, and rewards should be doled out as a structure upgrades, with a required buy-in (say you put in 10g on a tower when it’s paper, when it upgrades to t3 you get your 10g back plus 20% for example, and a continuing reward of karma and various stuff mailed to you while the keep is owned). Enemies taking upgrading structures could plunder a portion of that investment. There could be a similar claiming mechanic for guards/camps/doylaks for solo/small group players.
Whether you agree with the idea or like/not like the examples my main point is that a lot of cool stuff could be toyed with this game mode, but according to Anet they probably look at metrics with a simple equation/mindset – Zerging/Zergers = ROI (pushing up the left pushes up the right). Anything that doesn’t fit that simple mindset and whatever design docs they have to follow just isn’t considered.
Anet doesn’t read or acknowledge this forum. It was a good read, but anyone reading this probably already knows and agrees with your points. Unfortunately, Anet is not amongst those people since they don’t understand the WvW player base. It is like we’re speaking a different language lol.

Well thought out detailed post OP. The kind we need to see more of and less of the one hit rants that offer no solutions.
I will have to disagree with the above a bit, I know ANET does read these forums, they just don’t respond unless they have something to say and yeah it is kind of sad how rare that is but in the past trying to stay involved with the WvW community hasn’t gone well for them. We are not exactly a simple lot with one clear idea of how things should be, read any of the WvW CDI’s and see just how diverse of opinions we have. The vitriol of the casual vs hardcore vs GvG debate alone is enough to turn anyone off to compromise. I wish there was one game mode that worked for all play styles and one solution that could improve it for everyone but magic bullets are more rare than red tags in the WvW forums.
I think ANET probably does understand a certain group within the WvW community fairly well but may have written off some of our fringe elements. The new HoT map suggests maybe they understand the EotM crowd a bit too well but that is a segment of their player-base and I guess only they actually know how big of one. I don’t like discovering I am in the minority either but I am starting to get use it.
I think the cost of runes and sigils is a direct consequence of wrong design choices. They already reworked many runes, and still the vast majority is considered either a “cheap alternative” or downright “useless”.
There’s a reason if everyone wants Strength runes for PVE (and some WvW builds too): they give the best overall damage. Why can’t we have alternatives that can give the same amount of damage with some secondary effect variation?
Hoelbrak… good damage boost and 20% negative condi duration. Very strong for WvW, so people will seek those runes and avoid the rest. It’s not by random chance that many frontliners use Hoelbrak or Melandru… why not rework some of the runesets now considered “useless” to give some variation around the negative condi duration?
Same goes with the price of food btw… you have 3 or 4 food buffs that cost tens of times more than the others. Why? Because they grant negative condi duration or the best damage in game. Everything else is sub-par. The nice thing is that they introduced some more recipes with negative condi duration, the only problem is that those are even more expensive to craft than the old one

Yes, they uploaded a patch that made pvp lags better but wvw lags worse. they didn’t know before though, they just found out when a ton of wvw players were complaining.
But, come to think of it, that was in April March…

wvw is depressing
its potentially such a good game mode…
but the tier and server system is completely messed up.
i am in Underworld, last tier, bottom server… totally last place :P
EB… empty….. all borderlands… empty…. boring
depressing
i want to play but there is nobody to fight !
and no one on my team either !

Thanks, that’s it
Many, many good ideas in the OP. One can only hope these ideas are taken into consideration. What I love about GW2 is that its unique. However, WvW right now is that it’s broken, unattended, and what lil attention it does get is not what the player base really wants. This event for example, while I appreciate it’s effort didn’t click with me and I don’t care for it at all. To make matters worse are the bugs associated with it that people are abusing. If you cancel the event it looks bad for PR, you may not have enough time or resources to dedicate to fixing the bug so we may just be left with riding it out. However, in doing so that leaves a bad taste in the players mouths as it kind of shows that WvW is not being taken seriously and neglected when such a crippling bug is not being fixed or addressed. Overall I love WvW for what it stands for and it can be amazing should you dedicate resources to it and take some of ideas from the community and perhaps from other games as well.

I do actually agree that it’s nice to see them try to do something for WvW by giving us an event- in a way it shows that they’re trying to tell us that they’re not ignoring us and want to promote WvW.
HOWEVER. The problem with this event is that A) pretty sure I heard it was planned by a PvP dev? So that doesn’t even make sense and gives everyone even more reason to suspect that there is not actually a WvW team anyway.
This event really caters more to the PvE population than WvW population. It is an event that has turned WvW into EoTM on steroids- just endless ktraining, which is not what WvW players nor what it should be about. So while doing an event shows me that they’re trying to prove they aren’t neglecting us, the content of this event proves to me that they still aren’t listening to us and do not understand what WvW players want, because this event caters to the PvE/Ktrain population.
And at the end of the day, that is what’s making me lose faith in this game and in ArenaNet. I appreciate the effort at trying to do something for WvW, but the fact that they are so out of touch with what WvW is even about just makes me believe it is never going to see the improvements we want, and any attention it receives will only make it more PvE and Ktrain.
EOTM crowd is mostly PvE crowd. True WvW players don’t care for EOTM and don’t do it because ktraining is boring..
Take a good look at Fort Aspenwood and Maguuma right now. They’re getting destroyed in PPT in their matches when they normally win their matches or come in a close second place.. Why? Because almost all of their WvW guilds won’t raid this week because of how stupid the event is and how it has made it pointless to try. Both servers are filled with WvW players who only care for WvW game mode.

Actually Fort Aspenwood is suffering a leak of guilds leaving to t3.
Bumping this for visibility!!!! ANet give WvW some love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Regarding A.net reading forums – I they think they do. They also make knee jerk reactions. Take a look at all the G vs. G drama that happened last year. What did they do, moved it to obsidian sanctum. Depends on what server you play on the activity of it. But wait a minute, wasn’t the OS originally a FFA jump puzzle required for map completion?
Oh yeah, too many people complained that it was too difficult and you removed the requirement. But first you removed the siege or placement there of. Oddly enough people still rage quit when you play with them a little bit using the various traps. Guess timing, PvP, or using the mystic pools is too much to ask.
Point is – they do listen to some of the player base but maybe not what some want…

yop … but i think ANet d/c the wire between them and it community.

This post speaks to my heart. As a WvW-only player, I found myself beginning to branch out to PvE because of how lacking in progress I am compared to someone with the same amount of time spent in PvE. Playing long hours now in WvW only reminds me how much money I’m losing because I’m not in Silverwaste/Orr/Dungeons. It’s heart breaking, because WvW is so fun and keeps you on your toes all the time. You need actual skills and you need to constantly think about what to do next (if you’re an off-hour/defender/havoc like me). Speed and time is vital! PvE doesn’t provide that kind of thing. You only think about how effectively you can speedrun dungeons.. And what not.
Excellent post. I’ve been waiting until there are substantive changes in WvW before I bother with it again. Needless to say I’ve been waiting a long time.
I’m glad that so far the reddit post hasn’t been removed. This is great so far and may well be seen and adressed by the devs : )

You’re meant to craft ascended armor by using the crafting system. The armor and weapon boxes are bonuses.
You should get all the trinkets you need through laurels. Just select the laurel login reward chest.
For ascended sinister armor, you only need 400 bandit crests to get the sinister insignia recipe, and then change stats in mystic forge. 400 bandit crests is definitely doable for a WvW-er.

Great thread very well said
WvW population matters -
- Servers have vastly varying populations
- Quantity, quality, and coverage are the three major factors in what makes a good matchup
- “a good fight” is roughly balanced forces, where “balance” mixes quality and quantity
- off-hours flips affect prime time play
- Please listen to us- dedicated WvW player base and finally do something about WvW population imbalance
- Sheep leave if they are just being fed to wolves, wolves leave if there are no sheep?
I kinda feel like WvWvW players at this point are like a married man’s mistress who still believes he’ll leave his wife even though they just bought a new house. Make some other arrangements folks. :P
