Thief in WvW
If metabattle is to be believed, there is only one build for thief in WvW…

I was in doing a bit of roaming and three of us faced one of those the other day. Tons of movement, condi removal, stealth, and decent damage. It might take a bit of practice to get good at it, but this guy was good — we never did put him down, and only good play on the part of the mesmer on my side kept him from kills.
Of course, you have to own HoT to get the Elite Spec, but that’s true with most if not all professions. The vanilla options just don’t stack up well. If you look on this page,

You’ll see that only one Fractal and one Raid build don’t require Daredevil.

I wouldn’t go for Signet of Malice. It’s not as good as it used to be, for whatever reason. Withdraw is still the best heal, just saying.
WvW build looks ‘solid’.
@OP: Only D/P is viable (you can run any other set as a second, but D/P is your free card) – there is some videos in the link. Usually: Watch how others play to learn thief. I actually sparred a lot with enemies back when the game wasn’t completely broken.
Thats horrible build on metabattle, but ok.
How to get better at thief:
1) Get a good thief friend and play other classes in PvP against him to know their skills and how they can manage to survive against it
2) Duel, duel, duel, unless you can 100-0 best druid/rev in a duel, the classes you counter, in 1v1 when using a thief, you have no reason playing it.
3) learn the combos, there’s billion YouTube videos about thief combos
How to kill things as a thief:
1) interrupts, know your enemy skills you need to interrupt, necro heal, etc
2) Against good enemy, make them think you’re doing something defensive and burst them, the rare times I die from thief, they drop a smoke field, baiting me to think they will stealth but they steal at me and do a burst while i am mid animation.
3) start the fight, if you get jumped, you’re gonna waste some initiative.
4) Same as above, save your initiative and cooldowns by making enemy chase you, 90% of WvW population are stupid enough to waste their leaps and die mid leap animation chasing you. If you’re forced to go to enemy, it is not good.
5) In group fights, I am afraid you cant do much alone against melee heavy comps, if they have some ranged, you need to focus noobs (lowranks, rangers, overextenders) etc. Pairing up with a mesmer is the best solution so you can pretty much kill anything.
EU Roamer, Dueler, Commander, Fighter, Scout
you mean your newly PVE thief to WvW?
try this one then

Gate of Madness
Watch videos, learn which toons to target and which to avoid, set macros, burst in 0.1 seconds while enemy is locked. Run away if doesn’t work and reset fight.
Or play cheese thief.
Or do what most of them do these days, travel in packs with 2 thiefs an engi and a mes and feel good when they manage to win against one.
I’m on power necro this week (having a rest from water staff support ele) and every sensible thief runs from me unless they have plenty of support. Condi type thiefs are my favourite bag food:-)
Don’t over commit and be patient, your auto attack does more damage than the rest of your skills so just auto attack if you need to do damage.
Save headshot for interrupting skills, if you just burst someone and they’re at 60% or less health they will probably heal so be ready to use headshot. By that I mean your finger should be on said button already, draining sigil is stupid strong if you can keep getting interrupts.
If multiple people come or you see more people heading over, stealth and keep back and ofc if running the training wheels build of shadow arts it’s an amazing condition clear.
When you get more used to thief switch to the deadly arts variant, auto proc weakness on burst (steal because it applies poison) prevents counter burst and the auto proc immobilise is insanely strong. Improvisation if you’re lucky will recharge a heal, shadowstep or your signet which helps and some bundles are amazing to use twice.
Always steal from a mesmer if you can unless against high condi and there’s a ranger near, the steal from ranger is a potent condi clear.
