Thief low HP, rooted and gone away, how?
I guess he used either shadowstep, then hide in shadows/blinding powder and ran with infiltrator strike/ infiltrator shots far enough, or had placed a shadow trap.

As for locking him down… if he has shadowstep/shadow trap available – you can’t, it’s either burst him down, or he runs away. Conditions might work to tick him down from 20% hp to 0%, but with the traits Shadow’s Embrace and Shadow’s Rejuvenation… not likely.
probably had shadow return avaiable, you just got outplayed that is all
lol 10k range on shadow trap, well i guess trying to lock a thief is useless then
Thanks Pavel

Not at all, its the same as saying trying to put conditions on a guardian is useless.
I’m trying to figure out what I could have done to prevent the thief from using shadow return / shadow trap since both of them are stun breakers…
Edit: actually shadow trap do not break stun
Edit2: well i guess the thief must have used shadow step on me on his first attack, then when he was low on health he just used shadow return even while beeing rooted, so he ported around 1200 m and stealthed again using health skill.
Thanks for the answer guys

It does break stun, Neutro, it does, even if it’s not activated by enemy. However, sometimes a pebble on the road can screw your teleport(the shadow trap).

haha yes i just tested it with a new thief in the mists, 10k range and break stun, imba :d
i think i’m gonna roll a thief and abuse this
Welcome to kitten balance
As anet said on their live stream, when it was six plus of them against one thief, don`t even bother trying.

Yep that’s why all the ‘CC thief and nuke’ advices from people who only kill uplevelled thieves is worthless. A decent thief will laugh at your roots. Root him, he wil lstealth, and port away in random direction – still rooted but you need a zerg of elementalists to cover the area with deadly AoE. There he will regen to full, drop conditions, regain initiative – all while invisible, and then kill you easily.
How to properly burst a thief-
Step 1: lure thief to cliff (not difficult as they’ll approach you anywhere, believing they’re walking into a win win situation)
Step 2: send thief over cliff.
Step 3: Move on with your life.
Dealing with bad thieves 101.
Run away, wacth said thief spam 22222, when he runs out of initiative turn around and profit.
Dealing with good thieves 101.
If you are a thief, prepare to fight for 15m, both dancing around trying to bait stealthed openers and counter, if there are neutral or ambient mobs around, budget for 30m of said “fun”.
If you are not a thief, you’re wasting your time trying to 1v1 a good thief as theyll just keep resetting the fight or troll you with cnds of ambients/neutrals, unless you like a challenge or are just bored, move on there are better things to do in wvw.
If he has Shadow Embrace he cleanses one condition every 3sec while in stealth. It triggers instantly when he enters Stealth.
So when he went into Stealth, he likely also cleansed your Immobilize.
Stealth>Teleport Hack>Out of Combat>Res
Good luck proving it, but it happens more than you think. Just consider what information happens client side compare server side.
The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”

HiS + Shadowstep (etc.) seems far more likely to me.

He could have also been using the thief trait that removes a condi every 3 seconds in stealth. It probably instantly removed the root (all stealths immediately remove a condi and then another 3 seconds later) and then ran away while stealthed.
Probably Shadow Trap. It sounds good in theory though, however it literally NEVER works due to the terrible shadowstep pathing. It probably took the thief about a 10th of the distance it was supposed to before he snagged on a pebble, however luckily for the thief, this was out of your view.
Not many people run this at all in WvW as it operates slightly better in spvp.
My guess is that the map he was queued for popped while he was stealthed and he vanished.

this… players of all classes have used this “trick” to escape certain death. Otherwise it was probably SS/SR or similar port ability like shadow trap.
The last possibility was a teleport hack which are still around.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
I sometimes… use infiltrator’s strike on the ground behind something (choose a specific spot to recall basically), then use steal to close in, attack and shadow return if needs be.
Spots I choose to mark for recall usually wont be within the line of sight of my intended target.
Maybe..
Root is utterly meaningless against a thief. The moment he uses stealth, he gets away. And that’s easily achieved: cloack and dagger on the roots.
