Thief - most used special class.
I wonder if there is a special program you need to run to have an idea what the hell he is talking about.

I was wondering too why some thieves can take my 30k hp toughness built engineer in a few hits, while shrugging off nearly all damage done to them. It’s like they were level 160 or something, or I was lev 1, but I’m in full exotics. Can someone confirm there is indeed such a bot that can do this? Average 6k damage per hit is clearly a bug, especially considering it was not a glass build, felt more like I wakittenting a guardian.
EDIT:
And yet again.. I wrote ‘WAS HHITTING’, why is the filter implying I’m swearing? And yes I know why it triggers, and it’s clearly a bug.

If you lost 30k health in a few hits from a thief you should have popped retal and then typed /laugh as he killed himself.

As far as I know, Retaliation is a set amount based on the level of the person who activates it, not the damage of the attacker. It was also nerfed last patch.
The only people who really have to watch for Retal, are AoE classes who attack a zerg with lots of AoE Retal up. Barrage Rangers have been known to kill themselves.

LOL no retal is a big threat to a thief. I run P/P-D/D. On full health, if I use unload on a player twice in succession I will literally be downed. Its extremely difficult to kill anyone with retal on because of this I have to kite from range and stack bleeds for 90%of the fight. Against engineers and guardians who can stack this for long periods its usually just better to move along because it will take a really long time to kill them or I may make a mistake that gets me killed.
It’s the few initial strikes that take the most health. Popping retaliation when you are hit unexpectedly from a thief usually means you are at 1/4 health already.

These thieves threads are making less and less sense each day.
If you don’t like theives, you shouldn’t have nerfed my FN ele.
Notice how now after they nerf ele into oblivion there are all these thief hate threads. A lot of people played ele before because of the survival. All we were able to do is run away and hit for crap damage, rarely ever killing anyone and just being annoying. A lot of us got sick of the constant nerfs, so started rolling thieves since they have the mobility we USED TO have and also have the benefit of dealing 4 times the damage as ele and can stealth and reset the fight till we get the desired outcome of you being dead and us dancing on your corpse. So you’ve gotta ask yourself the question, which was worse? A mobile ele who was just a nuisance that you couldn’t kill, but also couldn’t kill you, or a thief who keeps harassing you till you die almost 2 shotting you while you cant see them?
Retal killing a thief ? The bullcrap sure is strong with this thread. Against some condition p/d builds who attack a lot, retal can be a nuisance, but never a problem. These days I just swap to sword and steal the retal when I’m fighting a player with high retal uptime.

Considering TPvP is somewhat the balance focal point, and at that time your “low damage, undying Eles” where more demanded than Zerker Warriors in CoF speedruns, because they could hold points like a champ and could cover a lot of distance fast, that’s why Eles got the nerf bat. (Not to mention being the only class that could block treb shots along with being good in a zerg)
Thieves on the other hand, are on the lower end in TPvP, even lower in PvE and only really good at Dolyaks, Senties and stomping Pugs who haven’t learned their tricks in WvW. Sure most of the roamers you see a thieves, but that mostly because all the other classes are running around in zergs actually taking towers and things. (AKA: Accomplishing things for their server)

Indeed. People saying pop retal and laugh at the thief dont know how retal works. Its NOT a percentage based on the damage a character do – hit for 10K or 1K, retaliation will still do 300ish damage. The faster he hits, the more retal he get of course but its STILL only low damage for each hit.
For those curious, its been up on the wiki all along:
Damage dealt depends on the level and power of the Retaliation’s source (i.e. whoever gave Retaliation to the entity being attacked). At level 80 this is: 198.45 + (0.075 * Power)
I think he is pretty strong 1 vs. 1 especially with the different behaviour of crits in WvW than in sPvP(I think there are different caps in sPvP?) – but that 1 vs x videos in Youtube… players that don’t know how to teamplay in small groups because they are only used to zergs…
2 or more people should not have a problem with 1 thief if they work together – and with “working together” I don’t mean:
A fighting with the thief… B coming to help… thief running away and a lot of stealth so you don’t know his position. B running back to bigger group. A stupid as he is: trying to seach the thief running even more away from the bigger group… getting killed. Instead of staying with A.
People are to focused on killing the thief and let the thief lure themselves away from the main group… easy targets then. I had last time on my matchup 1 thief on our side of SM in EB(between our keep and our SM gate) – looking for dolyaks to kill.
And of course I know: This guy must have good equip and skill otherwise he would not do this. So as average player with glass cannon equip I don’t run after him. Instead I stay at the road with 1 other guy waiting… if he wants the Dolyaks he needs to attack. He is at disadvantage then(I have good skills if he attacks and if he does not manage to kill me fast which can only happen if I’m 1 vs. 1 and he gets the first hits and then gets away/stealth fast so I can’t counter).
Yes… we need to wait all the time near these dolyaks then instead of killing him fast and then go away… but: If we killed him and went away just others could already be on their way and kill the dolyaks. So no problem staying there.
