Does ANET have any stance on this issue ? do they allow it ? do they ignore it ?

every single server i have been on has one person who enters the map just to troll the commander or the guilds, via map chat abuse. When you look for them they are always standing at spawn AFK just talking utter rubbish to take the enjoyment out of the game.

Now you might be thinking ‘why don’t you just block them’ but should i have to block them ? NO they should not be a problem in the first place. The one i faced tonight was so toxic and rude to every one in that map and the entire server community it really disappointed me to hear the person had been around for over 4 months doing the same toxic abuse ! every single day. I had reported the person, due to there behavior and personal attacks towards the commander for the last 3 hours. but why is ANET not dealing with this issue ? Are they aware of the amount of toxic and abusive players in the WvW map chats

WvW to me has always been knows as a friendly place to talk with other people. but more recently it is a place that is full of chat trolls who do nothing but abuse people because they know they can get away with it without punishment.

i would like to know ANETS and others opinions on the matter please

Depending on what they say or do, you can report them for verbal abuse or spamming. The easiest option is to block them after doing so and tell everyone in your squad to block them so no one has to deal with it until Anet can handle them. There are tons of reports and only a few people to respond to them so it does take some time to be able to do so. 3 hours is not very much time to respond given the number of spam/ verbal abuse reports they receive. With the block and chat filters you get to see only what you want to see, so it isn’t like you are forced to see what they have to say, you do have control over that.

If they are siege trolling, I was told to report it as a bot so a GM will come watch them and see what they are doing and make a judgement call.

Some of those guys have been banned and came back and are still doing it.. They just keep getting banned and reinstated. I thought the only things that get people perma banned have to be really bad like hacking, gold selling, RL death threats, Racist/sexist xenophobic stuff so it may take quite a bit over the troll line to actually get perma banned.

The only problem is you feel offended and you want some nanny to come make the mean people go away instead of using the tools they already provided to deal with it yourself.

Grow a thicker skin or block them…. this is such a weird thing to complain about.

ot worried about a ban just a way to stop them getting a ‘lift’ from abusing people in map chat in WvW would work. If they could mute them or something that would remove the problem and still let them play WvW.

Then periodically announce in map chat that Xxx is a troll and to enjoy wvw just put them on ignore.

Frankly after you put them on ignore, it’s not your problem if others react.

Because grown ups need to know how to solve their own problems. Complaining about people being too mean and crying that no one is fixing your problems for you will get you nowhere in life.
And your right, I don’t have a problem with players being abused in map chat because there is an in game solution for the problem.

Your complaint is like saying that you don’t like a certain TV show but you refuse to change the channel, you keep watching every new episode, and you demand that the show is canceled. Doesn’t make any sense does it?

Add filter to your chat filter, or report and block. It doesnt happen overnight but eventually they get suspended, and come back and get suspended. And if they keep it up, suspension will turn to a ban.

Just remember the original ‘mouth breather’ from kaineng (no offense to the server, I loved my time there)… was set as a precedence. Some people like to troll others, gives them some amusement, but in order for any corrective action to take place… you need to give them a heads up. Anet filters or data can only provide so much. There is no job description having a real person look over every chat log on every map, its scripted.

Don’t feed the trolls! Best not to respond to rude or abusive behavior. Block and ignore.

Report, block…people act stupid on the internet its nothing new, the anonymity encourages people to act in a way they wouldn’t (I’m hoping) in real life.

Sadly, trolls are part of any MMO…Block and eventually report…It’s the best solution.

An other one: do not use the map chat channel but a vocal one…You’ll loss some information but normally the main one about the game and your team moves will be saved.

As a few others have mentioned, if enough people report the person(s) they do get banned.

What needs to be done is after “x” number of times of being banned for the same thing, they get a permanent ban, and the problem is solved.

Yes, some of these donkey chapeaus will buy another account, or get a F2P, and do it again, but the likelihood decreases when they know ahead of time there are permanent consequences. Then they give up and slither away.

It helps get attention if you mass report them in a short period of time, so wait until they go out of line with the personal verbal abuse and have the entire zone send in a report.

Other than that block and move on.

My approach has always been to combat them using humor. Its amazing how often they stop once you distract map chat with another topic. The trolls get drowned out in the noise.

I’d say, block and report and they even have the option for ‘verbal abuse’ in the report feature. If what the player is doing, is in fact, verbal abuse, then yes, you should report them and potentially they can get infractions and even bans. If they are not doing anything wrong, then you can risk getting a ban for using the report feature as a form of harassment.

Pretty sure a few people have reported me daily for talking to commanders in the past haha. Never meant any harm by the comments, and they were taken out of context and labelled as harrassment….wasn’t the intent mostly.

I know it sucks having people around you making the environment feel kitten when before you felt safe/accepted/protected. I mean just be thankful that other people are able to identify with your thoughts and feelings…and that you are all able to label them together as a troll. It hurts more when they go after you specifically and noone is around to help/support you.

I mean I know blocking doesn’t work against a dedicated troll. I block people all the time and I get another message from them a minute later….block again and another message….etc etc. The lfg/friends/contacts/blocklist system is MADE FOR TROLLS. It is a haven, and alot of them exist simply out of how easy and accessible it is to contact other players, especially when they don’t want to talk to you.

In terms of punishing people for things said ingame before blocking/muting….no devs would ever consider doing this except in extreme cases. In terms of punishing people for constant harrassment and abuse even after they are blocked and muted and all that stuff……yes there is an avenue for punishment in that scenario.

It’s unfortunate that these persons upset you and others. We all deal with this stuff though. In the future you should avoid seeking conflict/contact with/about the person. ANd avoid making threads like this. And avoid reacting or changing any of ur behaviour in response to said persons. Not for the sake of the person, or the forum users, or anything like that…..I’m saying this for your own sake. It will bring you more peace of mind to avoid triggering more conflict over such things. You aren’t being a pushover by doing this. You will one day learn that a lion does not concern itself with the opinions of sheep (I got that from the SAO abridged…from Game of thrones apparently). One day you will think so pooorly of these "trolls’ that you won’t even care….you’ll just be like “omg shush ur mouth already nobody cares what you think”….then you will mute them like u do to any other whining child without a second thought or care.

If you refuse to use the tools given to you than its your own fault.

Haven’t you had those puny, scared dogs bark at you, and then you look at them and feel sorry because they’re trying to put themselves as something to be taken seriously but are just too puny, insecure, and weak? It lashes out aggressively because to you, it is nothing, and it’s probably true. This aggression gives itself the validation it needs to function.

Now, let’s say those barks translated to English are about one of your relatives perhaps even in a graphically inappropriate fashion, your intelligence, or how you play.

Would you let this little thing ruin your day or heaven forbid, cause yourself to doubt your value as a human being?

Now, just realize that you are basically, more or less, dealing with the same exact thing. So next time, picture what you saw me describe here and just live life a little happier.

Block them. Its there for this exact reason. Anet has better thing to worry about.

Sadly…we lost our beloved World Troll due to our World Falling into 8th Tier & all our Major Guilds left for greener pastures in the Upper Tiers.

This pales in comparison now…since we’ve lost our World Identity…unless we mouse hover over our Host World’s name to remember who we are.

We’re “Nobody”…You should be glad to be considered “Somebody”.

The reality of the internet is that people will say and do things they wouldn’t do in real life for attention and reactions. So there are three steps you can take to stop them, and the more people who do it the more effective it is:

1. Do not feed the trolls. If they said all this stuff and no one responded and no one argued, they get bored and go do something else. What they want is someone to respond, this response triggers more of this behavior.

2. Report. Guess what Anet doesn’t have people just sitting around monitoring every chat channel in game looking for people saying inappropriate things, we have to bring it to their attention. The more people who report the more likely action will be taken. Action isn’t instant, the guy won’t just disappear immediately the GM’s have to investigate and follow their process and all reports will go into some kind of que. They also have their own punishment system and yes your report may not get the guy banned, it may not get him banned for long but all reports should at least put a flag on that players account. Anet is a business and they arn’t going to perma ban customers for anything minor, and yes generally verbal abuse, particularly over map chat isn’t a major offense, why? because of point 3.

3. Block them. GW2 has one of the most user friendly block systems i’ve seen in an MMO, just right click and done. No clumsy typing, it’s account wide not character specific and you can even see where they are if you really want to avoid them. As a player you do not have to listen to it, so don’t.

I was a mod on another MMORPG for years and I got this problem constantly, players being harassed but they refused to block the player because they shouldn’t have to. By not blocking the player you are encouraging them to continue this behavior. Once they are blocked, you will no longer have these problems.

Anet has provided tools for players to make sure they can customize what chat they see, you can turn on your profanity filter and block anyone who you find offensive. People are very different and what one person finds offensive another might find very funny where as a third person sees it as just boring. There isn’t a one size fits all so you have to customize your own size.

I have a few people on my block list and I don’t see any trolling at all.

Just block them. If they make a threat, tell you to kill yourself, or use racist language report them.

For most trolls a sassy response and block are sufficient.

The OP needs a little toughening up. Not everything in life is peaches and cream get over it.

I don’t block them because I like to see what they’re saying. So that if they start getting too bad or start trolling the commander I can take defensive measures. Having someone troll a commander can undermine them and hurt the server and destroy fun.

I do encourage other people to block them. Or some people do announce in map chat that they are a troll and to ignore and block them.

I have even whispered them and engage them in a conversation – it gets them to stop trolling the entire map and focus on me.

There are bullies and jerks everywhere, heck we’ve got a yuuuuge one running for president, just don’t let them ruin your game (or country).

I have a massively thick hide after working in an industry that requires it as standard dress code.

WvW thankfully has a high number of trolls. God forbid you go to gw2wvw.net, where the REAL action is .

GW2 is rated for 12 year aged children. Anet should take care of the abusive content by default. Or raise the age rating to 16+.

Well, I suppose some have found ways otherwise to troll even if you block them.

I have seen some rather, determined, individuals that are harassing other guilds on my server. While they are ignored in chat, they find other ways to harass them, like following them, saying whatever, and throwing useless siege— that stuff is fairly tame and easy to ignore. But I’ve also seen them create similar character and guild names to impersonate people and then troll as such so that the inattentive will think their victims are doing the crap. (As a side note, how do you report an offensive guild name?) Naturally said individuals have been repeatedly reported although I don’t know what option to pick when they do it.

Is this thread real? This game is rated T for Teen go ask mommy if its ok for you to play with the bad people calling you names.

What do you plan to do with these “toxic and abusive” players, ban them? And shrink the already microscopic player base?

Online interactions are not rated by ESRB, individuals should take care of abusive content by blocking and not whining.

Map chat can be toxic and terrible. I am from Maguuma, I know this better than anyone. Hateful and awful things are spouted as a matter of course.

Now, does it bother me?

Not in the slightest.

Why?

Because I am an adult and I know when and who to block.

Kids will always be kids and they will test whatever boundaries are placed in front of them, if you cannot handle the fact you are playing with a vast multitude of different players with different ways to play and different ways of dealing with whatever they are doing, then nobody can help you.

Block and move on with your life.

^This. People need to stop being so sensitive. If you’re going to play MP/pvp games, it’s something you either have to block, ignore, laugh about, give it back or leave. I can understand if it’s some cruel racist type chat, but sad to say it’s par for the course in gaming and the internet in general. People are going to single you out if you let them show it bothers you. And you just did that by making this thread…
