It’s true, make a thief, get him up to about level 40 (so you have all your utility unlocks, and enough skill points for dancing daggers) and join the mayhem in world vs world. . My thief is only level 54, but his damage numbers and abilities to survive any situation or catch anyone are simply unmatched.

Damage 1vs1 versus any class, even level 80’s decked in full exotics generally goes like this:
Steal (3,000) —> CnD (4,000) --> backstab (5,000 sometimes 10,000). At this point, the target is either dead or very close to it. At this point, all that remains is heartseeker spam for 3,000…4,000 each. Dead opponent.

This sequence works on all classes, and with a little practice on your timing, you can have it perfected and down so pat that it all occurs within about 5 seconds flat.

In world vs world you will find that no class gives you trouble. Some pointers:

1. Certain classes have bunker builds (warriors, necros, engineers, ect) but their health bars (regardless how big) are still inadequate for dealing with this kind of damage. It’s wash rinse and repeat, and you will win. Period.

2. Mesmers and other Thieves. For me personally, mesmers are the easiest to kill. Once you understand their mechanics and can figure out the real one (the one who is running around, throwing up bubbles, dodging, ect), simply stick to them and they will fall like a sack of bricks. As for other thieves, this is hit or miss. Mainly because thieves have the same great survivability as you do, and thus they can choose to disengage the fight and leave at any time.

3. Group fights. First, use a short bow. Your #1 attack hits multiple targets, your #2 attack is an AOE cluster bomb that hits multiple targets for upwards of 3,000 a pop. This attack is spammable. Second, always have dagger storm as your elite. The genius of this ability is that it’s an exceptionally long AOE that not only hits the enemy for 1,500+ damage a tick, but it also reflects projectiles, lasts approximately 8 full seconds, and cooldown is only 90 seconds. I’ve literally jumped into large group fights, popped this ability, and have downed multiple targets. People don’t pay attention to their health bar, and it works.

Best of all, the thief class possesses the most sought after trait in WvW: Survivability.

In world vs world this concept reigns supreme. No, survivability isn’t about vitality or toughness (see above, they don’t matter when you’re being hit for 5,000 damage in a swing move). Rather, survivability consists of your utilities and ability to disengage the fight if it’s going bad (whether 1vs1 or 10vsYou) and survive the encounter.


This is hands down the best part about the thief class, is that I have the ability to CHOOSE who I will fight, how that fight will go, and only I possess the ability to disengage the fight at any time and book it. I hold all the cards, my opponent holds none. With the shortbow #5 ability, shadowstep, 25% permanent movement speed increase, and a heal that gives stealth, you will not die you can time these right.

Are you being zerged? Pop the heal, shadowstep, shortbow #5 twice in a row. You will be out of combat range (25% speed boost kicks in) and you’re GONE in seconds. This is compounded when you complement other stealth abilities in as well or spec yourself correctly.

If you’re not having fun in WvW or want to try something new, check the thief out. It’s a whole new dimension. Just thought I’d share my experiences and tips.

At least until they are nerfed…

And just think, with a little more practice, you can take advantage of the stealth bug (exploit?) like many other thieves. That way, no one sees you doing damage as you come unstealth, do damage and time it just right so that you re-enter stealth a few brief moments after you render on high-end machines (would hate to think what it is like on low-end machines).

Well you won’t be killing any guardians, decent warriors, decent mesmers or non glasscannon thieves.

And the biggest nerf will come if they finally fix the culling problem.

You can have your HS thief. I’ll stick to p/d. Also, most thieves that just run in and dagger storm are terrible and incapable of doing anything but the FotM button mashing. I personally enjoy curb-stomping HS thieves.

Doubt the thief will be nerfed, unless the stealth mechanics are completely reworked (won’t happen).

Simply put, the risk vs reward regarding the thief is geared all towards the latter. Risk is virtually non-existent due to the stealth, extreme mobility, and maximum control with choosing who to fight, and how that fight will go. The ability to disengage and survive any conflict while simultaneously denying your opponent the ability to due the same—is the thief’s biggest strength. Essentially the thief holds all the cards, where as the opponent holds none.

When the footing is equalized in terms of the person behind the computer screen, a well-played thief will demolish a well-played warrior/mesmer/guardian/whatever, hands down.

I can say in confidence that in about 95% of scenarios if you’ll be up against any decent mesmer, you will not win.

^ You are forgetting that elementalist is a free kill, no matter who’s playing it. Elementalists rely on the same bs tactics as thieves to do to get kills: burst damage/surprise attacks. Most of the times I’ve died to an ele or died because of an ele while vsing someone else is because they used dragon’s tooth, burning speed, and then firegrab, since firegrab does way more damage if the target is burning that combo does massive damage when put together.

Anyway, if you rely on dagger storm you are gonna be a bad thief. I’ve never lost a 1v1 against a thief in wvw and I think I’ve used hs maybe once or twice my entire time playing, I just don’t enjoy it.

I’m hoping they don’t nerf thieves, because at the moment, if your class were to get nerfed there’s nothing really keeping you playing this game. It’s pretty bad. Since a ton of people play thieves in sPvP AND WvW that will be even less people playing the game if they were to get nerfed. There’s really no reason to nerf thieves as they aren’t OP. It just seems that way because of the baddies who spam heartseeker or try to infini-stealth.

There are a lot of aspects of other classes that make them “seem” OP but really aren’t.
mesmer – phantasms doing like 3k damage per attack, illusionary attacks, that multi-hit sword attack
engineers – grenade burst
warrior – bolas/rush frenzy hb
ranger – all of those traps + barrage/volley
guardian – multi-hit sword attack and the hammer 2 attack is pretty powerful.

All of this stuff is necessary in these classes. If they didn’t have them, they would be garbage.

Just think about it. If thieves get nerfed, people will start complaining about another class and then YOUR class will be nerfed.

OP is right. Just totally owned this guy on me thief. He was snaring, chilling, kiting… you know, all the stuff skilled players do? Luckily, these things have no affect on a thief. It scared me a little though, so I had to close my eyes. Fortunately, my finger was already on the 2 button, just spammed it as fast I could. Total epic win.

This concept of skill or strategy in 1vs1 combat goes out the window, we do what we can to win. People just get mad at thieves because they wish they had 1/10th the survivability or damage output that thieves have, but it doesn’t make them OP. Thieves are squishy and if they get zerged you can kill them.

If you are losing 1vs1 to thieves then its because you aren’t playing your class right.

i must say that you might have an terible luck at picking your opponents OP
i got lot of time spent inside wvwvw , and i can say no thief hit me more then 3200 dmg on my guardian, and i had 0 orbs back then, they had 3
i found most of thiefs pathetic , as an guardian with 3300 defence since counter them is to easy. in order to counter them all i have to do is autoattack +retailation , so they will never have my back. When they use stealth i start aoe the area, if they risk to stealth on low hp they will die from burn / aoe.
i wonder how you deal with an condition necro or an tanky guardian , i doubt you got any chance. Even engeniers can make you problems.

Ugh… This topic brain make hurt.

This is why thieves need balancing. Not because they are overpowered. Not because they can go invs for ridiculous amounts of time (+culling). But because large amounts of noobs, like (Sunreva.8714) that flock to this class to get large hit numbers and a few easy solo kills. But in reality do nothing in WvW.

The majority of thieves in WvW run when ever disadvantaged, and pick off one player then book it for a minute. This kind of fighting doesn’t help take keeps, nor does it push back a zerg. They cant even solo cap a supply camp. Basically, they do nothing but clean up the PvE people in WvW.

A-net needs to take the fix bat to the thieves, so players like me don’t get lumped in with the band wagon kiddies.

The OP part about thieves is the culling system not reloading them fast enough out of stealth. Obviously, the 8k steal+7k CnD+8k backstab in 1.5 seconds after comming out of stealth (when still invisible) IS overpowered and will eventually get nerfed.

I personally do not run this FotM build on my thief.

Fail post…. Lvl 54 doing this kind of damage without the high end lvl 80 items is not true and complete set of traits that give +10% and +20 damage increases

secondly, surviving any situation and doing lots of damage….. Sounds like the 30/30/30/30/30 build we always hear about in the QQ forums. Dude your lvl54. You dont even have 70 skills points

“Are you being zerged? Pop the heal….” – Erm the heal takes some time to charge up. Thats why I use withdraw as its instant. Any decent player will interrupt or daze you. Im guessing you just had one lucky night of fighting a bunch of bads that where way under your level before you came to the forum.

I run pistols. The sustained damamge is more important in WvW than burst, otherwise you never have any hope of taking down the 2nd or 3rd guy

Allot of you guys seem to be missing the point. It has nothing to do with “if playing better, you can win.” It truly has nothing to do with that.
Problem is, it’s incredibly easy, to be good on a thief. Thieves accomplish using 2 buttons, what other players have to use there full range of abilities to accomplish, counting weapon swaps. I’d be willing to bet, I kid u not, there r some thieves that don’t even know what their weapon swap button is. I know this, cuz my first character was a thief, and I could never remember what it was, honest fact. Why? cuz simply put, I didn’t need to.

Player skill aside.
Average skilled guard, will lose to an average skilled thief.
Average skilled ele, will lose to an average skilled thief….
I think u know where this is going, it’s the same for every class.

Heck, it’s probably not far off to say that any non-thief, average player, will even lose to any, below average thief.

As a Condinecro they only win if I am half asleep. You can remove the culling issue by just turning down your settings. I have a top end machine with a 2560×1440 monitor but I set everything to medium with Ultra LOD.

GOOD thieves who dont just spam HS are competitive, not OP.

The programmer/incompetent in charge of the “culling” issue himself has posted multiple times on this forum that system specs have absolutely nothing to do with when/if NPC/PCs appear on your screen (AKA, “invisible armies”, and the source of a good 50% drop in GW2 players over the past two weeks). So, stop spreading this BS, please.

He was vs another ele in that group as well… so by default you should know that he massively outgears and outskills them. The difference in skill is really huge.

As for theifs… today ive seen a guildie thief engage a full hp lvl 80 enemy (think he was engineer) at same time as me. Enemy got downed before my FIRST fireball even reached him and thus instantly turning that skirmish in our favour.
Ive seen him take down veteran guards down to 10% hp in 1s flat. I play full exotic berserker setup and cant even dream of that kind of burst. Its flat out kitten such bursts even exists.

Im only kitten because now i dont know what to lvl… thief or mesmer.. kitten elementalists…

pressed some keys.

went to the creation screen and deleted it, who the heck wants to play that kitteny profession?

Thieves have the ability to leave and reset if they are losing. It’s something apparently every game feels like it has to include. Almost like a mini game.

The culling issue is not a settings based option on your client.
It is maintained by ANet. Therefore your suggestion is a “No Workie” option.
The issue has been acknowledged by ANet a a feature of their engine.
