Turning off WVW chat...
Excellent idea! I used to do something similar.. I’d wear headphones underneath my football helmet and just do whatever i wanted on the field. We lost every game but oh well I’m my own person! Fight the powah brother!

Yes, you did pay for your game and you can do what you want. However, I never take that mindset myself when it comes to my actions affecting other players. If I’m doing something detrimental to my team, then I’m doing it wrong. There’s such a thing as integrity that can and does extend into gaming, and it’s up to you whether you have it or not.
To answer your question, no I haven’t really thought of that because of how WvW is designed and with the population caps of each map. Unfortunately this game doesn’t have open world PvP, so I’ll save my mindless roaming for another game that does have it.
There’s an ignore feature in the contact list interface. Hopefully ArenaNet will implement /mute /squelch and custom channels at some point.
Also, if you want to PvE you should consider going to a PvE zone. It’s frustrating for those that are actually trying to complete objectives to see others not participating, especially during peak time when there’s often queues.
I think you can create custom channels right now. In your chat window, there should be a button to add chat tabs. You could add one to just show the type of chat you want to see while you are farming (e.g. whispers, says, guild chat, etc).
You can always turn off the map and team chat, I have never had someone from my team send me messages that you are not helping your team. You paid for the game as did every other player and you have every right to play how you want to play. Now having too many people wander around can affect the match so I would save the gathering nodes for PvE since most are from the early level areas.
When you go to the PvP areas you should try to help out somewhat, if you want to go off your own and kill random people that is ok as well since you can consider it scouting and of you call out possitions of raiding parties or enemy zergs you are helping you team.
Just create a new tab in your chat, devoted to only /w or /s or /g
Here’s what you need to do, press H, click the lower left tab with the crossed swords click go to heart of the mists, then walk forward and a little bit left and go through the portal to Lions Arch, now heres the complicated bit, waypoint to any zone on the map and go and wander there, if you want to do PvE stay out of WvW.
Whiteside Ridge
Cut out a cardboard flap and super glue it over the bottom left corner of the screen. You don’t have to use cardboard, in fact material will do so long as it’s not transparent.
I always assumed the nodes were in the WvW zones for the players who do not PvE to get their daily/monthly achievement if they wanted.
WvW is a large scale PvP zone. It’s not intended to be a node farming map. Do your server a favor and follow Mattress’s suggestion.

Hold on a sec, can you give a few more details? I tried walking a bit left but I didn’t see the portal. Did I do something wrong?
On a serious note, leave WvW if you want to farm nodes. If you want to kill players solo that is fine, as long as you call out positions of their groups in chat. The chat is there for a reason. If you don’t like it, leave it. Create a second chat so you don’t need to look at it all the time. Just switch back to help out every now and again.
You can always switch to the combat log. You can also disable various channels in the Main tab as well as create a new tab with the only channels you wish. Just do some clicks on the tabs (and the chat window as a whole) (with the right button too) to see the available options.
Hope that helps
Personally, I don’t have problems with people mining ore or gathering stuff on their way.
But if a see somebody farming mobs – I’ll take my time to repot them as bots.
As for solo PvP, it’s up to you, but you can’t do much solo in WvW. You kill once, you kill twice, on third time a group of 5 will murder you and dance on your body.
But. If there’s a call “we need all for defending our keep/castle asap!” – make sure you get there and help. Otherwise you’re a horrible human being and everybody hate you and your whole family.
you know, you are totally right except for one single thing.
WvWvW in this game (and PvP MMOs in general) are designed to be a team effort. You just cannot escape or abstract yourself from the team implications when you are participating in the game.
if you step into the field but then refuse to be part of the team you are hurting those around you, which is plain bad manners.
I think your mindset just doesnt fit very well with MMOs.
I thought that having only local chat and fights not showing on the map would bring a new degree of complexity and depth to WvW. You’d have to have message runners to coordinate forces and there’d be a time delay between when an enemy attacks and when reinforcements arrive.
If I’m not mistaken you can just select to see the battle log as the other person said. With WvW though it is nice to know what is going on and just put the kiddies on ignore.
Wow, some of you took this to an extreme and its sad. Also, you took something else to extremes when I mentioned farming nodes..that was just an example. All I really mean is: wandering…coming across a dolyak and making sure it is escorted for a while (helping wvw), wandering more, heres a small group of people, let me help out real quick…oh theres a straggler… All the while not paying attention to the self proclaimed god of WvW in wvw chat…
I.E. Doing your own thing, pvp and pve alike.
Who said I absolutely HAVE to listen to the “commander” in wvw… really?
LoL @ The guy reporting people for farming in WvW..Goodluck guy
I think it’s okay to farm and do whatever you want in W3 but at peak times I think players need to stop the jumping puzzles, farming and come together when folks are ‘barking’ in the chat
Gandara struggles with numbers and it’s always somewhat annoying as a casual player to see people keeping possible people who would help protect keeps/castles jumping from A to B or just doing their own thing as places begin to fall and panic erupts in chat as a supply depot gets taken down.
It’s a team thing even if you go in alone… chat should always be open just in case you’re close to someone that does need help
WvWvW Player Who Doesn’t Have Much of A Clue
I’d love to be able to turn it off. All the whining about thieves in all caps can get annoying and distracting. The only whining that is justified is about mesmers allowing people to skip the entire jumping puzzle for free blueprints/honor badges.
Cesmode, the role that I think you would enjoy the most in wvw is that of a scout. They wander around and generally keep an eye upon one particular area. At times this is rather boring and has little action but is a vital role to successful wvw.
You can turn off your chat and team if you really must but I would suggest still keeping in touch with a commander via tells. Providing them with accurate and useful intelligence is vital.
Looking at the comments again I’m guessing I’m really lucky on Gandara as chat is actually used to communicate lol
WvWvW Player Who Doesn’t Have Much of A Clue
I like to queue for sPvP and meander around for the scenery.
AKA: Darkshines, Schroedingers Mesmer
If you have a problem with the commander, just block him. but if you don’t want to listen to things going on in WvW, and just want to hit solo players and follow dolyaks to their destinations, just go somewhere else. You are not helping as much as a level 2 fresh out of the tutorial area who is willing to listen to orders and help out the battle at large.
Take the middle road, if you want my opinion.
If you really just want to do your own thing, that’s fine. Run from battle to battle on your own terms, while hitting any farming nodes you want in-between, but do go where you can contribute to the cause. It’s fine if you don’t want to ignore that platinum you’ve been trying to find. Go ahead and mine it but, if you are in W^3, you should still be a part of the team effort to defend the territory you’ve taken, alert your team to any trouble you find, and lend a hand in taking new towers and forts.
In other words, don’t turn off chat, just ignore it for the most part. If you see a lot of people shouting that you are going to lose a key casts or fort, for the love of all that is holy, please go and lend a hand or make way for someone who will.
If you really don’t want to be a part of a team effort at all, why play W^3 in the first place?

Hi,
I am wondering if anyone has thought of turning off WvW chat(if its possible…I think it is), and just wandering around, farming nodes, killing stragglers and random players, etc without the constant chatter and bickering in WvW chat. I think it would be somewhat enjoyable once in a while to experience open world pvp in the game, without the structure of it all and without people barking at other players. Before people come in and say "Youre not contributing to your server if all you do is ignore the calls for help and re-enforcement, and simply "wander"". Remember, its a game, I paid for it like everyone else, and I wait my turn in queue like everyone else. So, please don’t turn this into “Youre doing it wrong and hurting your server” thread. Theres no need for that.
Please do. I need the free badge.
