Unfair balancing in WvW
I’m no pro wvwer but i do run with guild a lot and coming from a smaller server (AR) I agree lower population makes it harder not so much in fights (a good guild group of 20-30) can wipe a larger zerg but more so coverage. I find our server has many skilled players we just dont have enough to cover so many borderlands. The only issue with match ups based on performance and population is that it eliminates the chance of a lower population server ever moving up to fight larger population servers which in most cases is more fun because of all the fights
I don’t think only having WvW during specific hours of the day would work. Yes it might bring larger server involvement but it would make it hard for people who want to roam as it would just be all zergs running around. Also all the timezones involved some people might not even be able to play.
Servers already are matched up pretty evenly. Exceptions are when servers break up and begin to drop in ratings, like SoR and EB currently. But otherwise servers are matched up via their glicko score with a random coefficient to keep match ups less stale. Personally I would rather fight the servers most closely matched to mine, but people complain about that.
And shutting down WvW between certain times will alienate players and is therefore a bad idea, in my opinion.
3. Time slots. To combat the problems above, you could make WvW only accesible during certain hours of the day and night. That allows for bigger groups to enter so you have at least a big zerg vs another big zerg. You could have the portal open up at 8 PM till midnight for example and then the next morning from 9 AM till noon and from 2PM till 4 PM. That allows 8 hours of WvW pvp during the day. Which is more than enough
I think something like this is really necessary to keep WvW alive.
Chop the 24/7 WvW scoring time into 6 hour blocks. Then, add the corresponding 6 hour blocks up over a week. So, every day from, say, 6 in the morning until noon will be added up to arrive at a score for that time block. That way you don’t feel like you have to play 24/7 to make it worthwhile and not lose everything you did to night-cappers. “Smaller” servers that still field a good number during one time period will at least have one time period where they feel like they accomplish something.
Ideally, you would “save” the state of each time block every day, so that on the next day you pick up where you left off, just like what happens when ANet deploys a hotfix. (I think the yaks keep “running” during those downtimes? Anything like that would have to be stopped of course.)
If this is too complicated, as I suspect it is, then just to a clean reboot each day for the play period. You still lose your upgrades from the previous day that way, but to compensate you could make then a little cheaper.
Two options:
1) score each day instead of the week
2) score weekends separately from weekdays, as the population usually varies a lot between weekends and weekdays.

This idea exists in the CDI thread and the devs are looking into it.

What do I do if I can only play from 2 to 4? No WvW for me?
Game is 24h because not everyone is playing at the same time as you are…

WvW would be accesible more than 2 hours a day though. In my suggestion I mentioned the timeslot 2 – 4 PM, so even with limited time, you’d be able to play still.
@ others.
I am happy to hear that the servers are matched up fairly after all. I don’t quite understand the system yet, so I will believe your word for it hehe.
I hope A-net considers appreciating WvW more than they are doing now, for a large part of the playerbase prefers it over any pve-dungeon / Scarlet-attack.
This is somewhat of a problem because oceanic players, understandably want to play on servers where there are other oceanics. So the oceanic players, unlike Na players, tend to cluster on a few specific servers.
IOJ, Dragonbrand, sea of sorrows come to mind.

2-4 AM?
Not everyone are available to play at exact times… Just imagine WvW woould be closed at the only time YOU can’t be online… Would you love the idea? Would you just shrug, accepting that WvW is not for you? Or would you rage that Anet stops you from enjoying a game mode you like?
I see it on EU server… FR have their prime (Paris time) from 9PM-11:30PM. Spanish have it later, 10PM-12:30. DE and international also have different time slots… so… any given timeframe is going to cut on any of these groups Prime, and they’re all gonna be unhappy…
I am not only pointing at my situation, but at the situation that have been stated numerous times as to why WvW needs to be accessible at all time… Earth is round, there are always people up at some time when we are sleeping… Requiring from them to play in exact time windows just because some people think everyone should fit in their timetable is not fair…
