Upcoming WvW Updates:
I strongly wish Anet would focus on increasing incentives for [PvE] players to participate in WvW (or punish them – why give the leechers of the servers world bonuses earned by contributors), rather than focusing on new ways to bring in grinding and potentially scaring away newer players further with this new system (progression, visible ranks, abilities, etc.).
make people play WvW. make “10 keep capture” a requirement for monthly.
Archeage = Farmville with PK
Well okay then. I’ve been thinking about taking a break but was hanging around for February. This pretty much seals the deal.
Thanks for taking time to give us an update. It does feel like, “Jam tomorrow”, though.
Still no announce about the reasons why the capacity of players in WvW maps has shrunk so much since the last patch ???

perhaps players are leaving the WvW aspect of the game (or play a different game entirely) that doesn’t get enough of ANet’s attention to fix critical bugs.?

I cannot say that I’m not massively disappointed. I know a lot of other people I play with will be as well.
I think WvW is going to be deserted for some weeks now that people know they have nothing imminent to look forward to, on top of multiple upcoming weeks of wildly mismatched servers ‘fighting’ (more like one server flailing about on desperate defense of one objective at a time while the other gets bored playing ‘Player Versus Door’ and falling asleep while zerging down various NPCs with no resistance) each other.
Welp, it was fun while it sort of lasted.
Byebye. The rest of us will continue to have fun in WvW.
It’s super funny to read some of the comments on what Anet needs to do to “optimize” the servers for performance, i mean, is not like they BUILT the whole system, so, maybe they know a whole lot more about how to optimize than any of you in here.
The QQing going on because of the delay is pretty fun to read too. People whine when things get released too soon and are buggy, but when they need to delay it to do QA testing whine even more. So many babies in here and I’m running out of popcorn!
They need to stop being cheap and get more bandwidth. Ever fought in a 3 way SM battle? WOOPS, your utility skills don’t work anymore !
Utility skills are so, last week.

Has it occurred to you that game development is far more complicated than any other type of software development out there? Also, no company that I have ever worked for has delivered software on time. Not a single one.
Can you imagine, for a second, how the working conditions of GW2 developers is and has been for the past 6 months? Think about that before whining about waiting a couple weeks for free content.

As a software developer myself, yes it has occurred to me. I’d say it’s medium. There are a lot more mission critical complicated systems out there (real time, life support, banking, etc). The engine is programmed and delivered. The rest of this stuff is game design and asset pipeline. I guarantee they have a game design group that codes game rules in a scripting language.
The queue problem is because everyone is on the same server… u should punish the player for being a bandwagoner at the top server and open transfers so they can redistribute
I don’t think its a sense of entitlement, but more a case of we stuck with you through some fairly mediocre times based on good faith in the game’s developers to deliver some well rounded solutions in good time and at least acknowledge the fact that we’re loyal customers.
All a full time wvw player has is Karma, Badges and empty pockets due to the design of the game. For some of us, that is all we do or the vast majority of time spent in game, being very passionate people as well of course this decision is unpopular because wvw players have seen fully developed dungons and season-events pop up that have complete itemisation… and we look at what we have, which is literally nothing and its been the same since beta.
I do project management and in some side aspects I also run developers I do some application development myself and hire programmers, they deliver on time or they get out. We get stuck, then I will get specialist problem-solvers in, that can think outside the box when the existing knuckleheads cant figure it out.
Because at the end of the day- its my professional responsibility to deliver great customer service, (not good, not ok or will make do- it has to be GREAT customer service) or I’m out of a job and funnily enough, customers do speak to potential customers and if they’ve got nothing to say about you, then they will find alternatives.

WvW only abilities based on rank is garbage if they give a player any advantage over another. It has never worked in the past. It won’t work here. Who are the players that would get the advantage? Mobs of 50 rolling over everything. Not only do they roll over everything but they get additional abilities earned through rolling over everything to roll over everything harder.
This is the incentive for playing WvW: it’s fun. People play football because it’s fun. They may also play football for scholarships or do it as their life profession to make money. I don’t think there will be scholarships or money awarded for playing WvW. Therefore the incentive to play WvW is fun. You bring on additional staff for WvW and this is their brilliant synthesis? Ranks sound great. It’s a great way to keep score. Rank specific abilities doesn’t work if it grants the player an advantage. It never has in an mmo. This is something you do in call of duty not two groups of 50 rolling over each other or one group of 50 rolling over everything. With this I see every incentive to practice match fixing. To go out in force and farm people when you are the server causing a blowout. I don’t want rank specific abilities that give me an advantage. I want blueprints.
No changes on commander tag anytime soon, see Mike’s reply https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/Willing-to-share-WvW-details/1192287
Extremely disappointed to hear that. I think players and devs agree that culling and que/bugs are the top priority. For me the tools to coordinate come next. We almost always run more than 5+ guild members in WvW and the commander and squad system is the only way in-game to group with waypoints, chat channel between all grps and supply info. As a guild we like to move as a fast mobile force doing hit and ran tactics… NOT to lead the zone.
The problem is we never end up using it as it interferes and causes confusion with those commanders that ARE leading. I’ve seen people harassed and flamed in map chat simply for using it for their guild activities.
At the very least they need to allow guild commanders to turn the pin off so only those people in the squad see it and reduce the pins to help the commanders leading the zone. Is it that hard to make squads /private?
So nothing about queues, vague statements about culling even though most players believe its worse than ever and no communication with more detail about what is happening at reset.

Why wait till big patch. Some changes take little time to do to fix WvW.
1) Remove badges from jumping puzzle. 1 day job. Can definitely be done in 1 week.
2) Add daily WvW kills in rotation. They can remove a daily in hours(Combo daily). This can be done in a day easily with their skill. The template for WvW kills is already available last time.
3) Remove bugs and exploit. Not sure how long it would take but many holes around the maps and the jumping exploit is still being used after being reported for nearly 2 months already.
These change should be done by this week easily(at least 1 and 2). I do not see a reason why it cannot be done.

Well, that certainly tempered my expectations!
Sounds a big pile of daily-cheevos/titles/ranks… do I come across as unimpressed so far? I hope so, I hope this is a big practical joke and it (the update) drops with new battlefields, more character-building, fixed exploits and a monumental improvement in the back-end architecture and game-engine optimization.
Yeah right! I was joking about the WvW update in-game just the other day, saying all it would be is a new set of progress-bars for the barely-sentient to fill every day; actually I wasn’t joking – I don’t have much faith in your top-level designers.
Sorry, I’m sure you’re great people who don’t really deserve my scorn at all – I hope you have better luck making a believer of me next time ’round.
Something getting delayed to make it better is acceptable. But you are setting people up for expectations.
Its save to say this patch is going to be a big deal to a lot of players, mess it up and you will see a portion of the playerbase simply walk out. Arenanet is on borrowed time with this one.
I know a lot of people that have been going “meh” since November, especially with the slap in the face from Fractals and ascended gear. And theyve just been sticking around for the Febuary patch. To see if it can renew their interest and promise WvW is getting more attention in the future. PvE has gotten a ton of updates, sPvP had some new stuff, WvW had nothing unless you count the temporary cosmetic changes for holidays (i dont).
But there is nothing stopping you from taking a break and by the time the patch hits, consider comming back. Or not.
(edited by Terrahero.9358)
My advise is to post the patch note and see the playerbase reactions to them. Balancing a game is never easy but at least listen to feedbacks from your playerbase.
So WvW update is pushed back? And I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess the PvE content is still on track?
Is there any solid information on what the majority of people play in this game? I only pve to gear up for WvW. And there’s no way sPvP has as much participation as WvW. Why is WvW the last thing that gets attention, even in months where such attention was promised?

Not surprised, I have come to expect dissapointment when it comes to gaming companies, what is shocking, however, is how many of them just keep repeating the same mistakes over and over and over and over and over and …..
Its sad watching so many companies go down this road.
I’ve defended Anet a lot. But this WvW update is objectively crappy. We desperately need NEW CONTENT, and instead we just get some kind of ranking, and there seems to be no plans for future new content.
After 6+ months we know every square inch of these stale old maps, and every possible position for siege. Nothing in WvW has surprised me for months.
WvW has amazing potential, more than any other feature in GW2. But it will go unrealized if Anet only give us two maps (EB and Borderlands).
I’m very disappointed.
FA
I don’t know why people are surprised or confused about this. ANet is a business, they’re there to make money, not to make the perfect game or to give out as much joy as they can. I’m sure some of the developers really do want to make a perfect game full of happy gamers, but the guys at the top, the ones calling the shots? Not so much.
ANet already have our money, and post-christmas the majority of people who will buy the game already have. They are now in the business of doing the bare minimum to keep players just, but only just, interested enough and staying around long enough to buy expansions and future games. And if they lose a few players? Not really a problem to them, they already have your money, and you’re not paying a subscription. Releasing patches with slight tweaks, failing to address lag and queues, and promising massive goodies just around the corner is exactly that; dangling a carrot on a stick that looks just juicy enough to stop the slow trickle of players leaving turning into a mass raging exodus.
And guess what? A reduction in WvW map population resulting in massive queues on the larger servers, exactly coinciding with the end of free server transfers; that’s a business decision too.
Like I said, I’m sure some of the developers don’t think like this, but business is business. We can wish it were not so, but we shouldn’t be surprised by it.

Promise is a promise, postpone it while you give other sPvP/PvE goodies again is a insult to our WvW players based. We all are waiting for your good news on February, and that good new was there is no february but March…
Why is it so hard to just give us one NPC who redeem badges for accended gears like laurel token? Why is it so hard to buff our loot gained on WvW? Why is it so hard to reduce the cost of sieges so that WvW players can still earn a living cost? Come on Anet, it’s so easier stuff to do that can finish in one Dev meeting and one day coding!
And yet you still tell us excuses about to “focus on culling” “complicated” etc while there are still easier fixes like “Purpose of playing WvW” or “WvW incentives/reward” which a crap ton easier to implement? Yes ranking is complex, and can be postpone to March, but come on other rewards are easier and better to do. Dont use culling as a excuse to postpone us =-=‘’’
Plus i dont think a ranking or some WvW rank based skill will be enough incentives, WvW players need to earn their living though golds to pay upgrade keeps/sieges, Rank and ability doesnt give you that! If you dont know, go ahead and be a only WvW commander!, pay the superior sieges yourself and upgrade your keep/camp, see if you can still earn a net income? You will find that it yield crap crap reward compare to PvE dungeons.

Super excited to see what Anet has come up with!! finally some WvW love
You sir are the most optimistic person here. I applaud you.
First of all I want to thank Colin Johanson for his update because I think communication between the developers and the community is essential in a game like this.
That being said, I must say that I’m rather worried for the future of Guild Wars.
First of all, let me point out that I love many things of this game and that I respect all of the incredible work that had been and is being put in it but, as a world versus world player, I’m not really having fun anymore.
From what I can remember, Arena Net promised us epic battles, epic challenges, epic everything in the wvw part of the game but now that the first months of enjoyment have faded away I don’t see anything epic anymore. Let’s face the true, maps are too smalls, too cloned and not built very well, gameplay is repetitive as hell, queues are shared among every server (!) and I don’t even talk about the issues and exploit flaws that are completely ruining the game experience.
What I mean is that I, and many other I guess, assumed that wvw would be the central pillar of Guild Wars 2 but let’s face the true, we all see now that it’s definitely not.
You guys have put the emphasis on events, pve content, dungeons etc. which is cool, no doubt about that, but I think that it is not what a great part of the community have been expecting, namely an epic world versus world game mode.
I remember something my GM said during a meeting a little time after I joined my guild: “Personally, I don’t like this game, there’s a lot of things that are not designed the way they should be but since this is the new platform we must adapt to it”. First I did not understand what he meant but now I do and seeing lot of people leaving just confirm that I’m not the only one.
You Arena Net guys have to understand an important thing: if a “new platform” with a better world versus world mode comes to be released, there’s a significant possibility that Guild Wars would be deserted and we don’t want that.
Please, just don’t underestimate the wvw community as it could turn out to be a fatal mistake, for you and us.
WvW only abilities based on rank is garbage if they give a player any advantage over another. It has never worked in the past. It won’t work here.
Actually it worked great in DAOC, which is the game that GW2 WVW is based on.

Come on. Don’t defend rank specific abilities that may grant you an advantage. You know what the consequences would be. WvW is one of my passtimes and I don’t want it ruined by people who think rank specific abilities which give them an advantage is a great idea and I don’t want it ruined by rank specific abilities which grant people an advantage. I already leveled my character up to 80 once(actually leveled 5 characters to 80). I don’t want to grind in 50 on 50 culling wars that has nothing to do with WvW to get rank specific abilities to be on a level playing field. That grind would probably go on perpetually. Think on the consequences! Ranks themselves are great. This is not CoD. If someone gets a scope on their gun as a rank specific ability and owns me because of it that does not work! That makes people do 50 vs 50 vs 50 culling wars on some designated part of the map where the three spawn points are closest to get their rank up and get that scope. Idea dismissed.
Thankyou for the info and to all trolls i say as i sad in all other game you wrote the excact same thing go to that games forum and write. When i played AOC it was so bad and all were going Warhammer (with i never played) so there i dont know what they wrote but guess SW-TOR and then at SW-TOR they wrote same about GW2 and now ESO, and then in ESO they will write same and complane why is ESO so bad….
The problem at least i think is to do a dungon they dont need it to work for 500players at the same time only 5 so its alot less work to get a dungon to work then to get something to work in WvsWvsW.
“- Exploring ways to help get more people playing WvW, as well as dealing with queue issues that come with those inherent issues of player population and demand.”
You could start out by removing the bloody repair cost of dying…. as a new player its immensly expensive to pay 1silver50bronze to die 1 time. its pathetic.
I like WvW and was ready to spend some hours daily on it. but i cant afford it so i had to stop. “great” right?
Delays are fine, but if the March patch is fail then u lose the only part of pvp end game u have like your “esport” spvp did.
Time will tell if this game was ment to be PvE only!
I’m a PvE player at heart.
But after you’ve maxed your crafts, got all classes sorted, and realised dungeons and fractals are no way in hell the kinda content you want to be playing. WvW provides the perfect dynamic environment for ALL players who have been with you since Beta. Not just the dedicated WvW crowd. I think the glaring WvW issues are hitting more of the player base than folks realise.
And no, I don’t haunt the JPs (:
If anything you should be looking at reducing 100 cap for siege weapons to make more room in zones.
They also may prohibit to use any pets, summons, minis, turrets etc. at the WvW – it will free a lot of space, I’m sure ^^
Also, they can remove all monsters from the WvW, also as all gathering nodes too.If all of it will not help – the last chance must be defragmentation of the server drives ^^
add remove all pve from wv3 jumping puzzles, to skill point to map completion
Any info from ANet about the queue issue?
Are they waiting for people just get bored and leave the game, or are they planning to makie some money on mass transfers?
Tons of chars. If only one day I manage to guess how to play any of them, I will post it here
Dropping this here:

I’m about to squee in real life.
That’s probably the massive caffeine talking though.
JPs are my favorite way of getting loot. I love them keep it up. Also don’t be afraid to make them harder!
Make sure to tell terrain design that any new WvW map should have more JPs and maybe some interesting terrain in general…. Also tell class-balance that the engineer landmine shouldn’t expire
Wow, that’s a long list, Chickenshoes. Well, I know that Tirzah is doing the new WvW map stuff (She did Hidden Garden I think) so it is SURE to be amazing.
Omigosh…
I got namedropped in a big thread
And if I thought I might have been responded to specifically I wouldn’t have sounded so demanding : /
A dealy is not surprising.. nothing about queue is a little more annoying…
It’s only stuff he should have had at the time of release after all..

Folks complain that developers never communicate…
Developers communicate with the playerbase and give tentative plans of upcoming content.
Players gets said tentative time for patch.
Patch is delayed.
Playerbase tosses a tantrum about how much developers hates their particular playstyle, because said patch wasn’t delievered “when promised”.
Folks complain that developers never communicate…
I would enjoy officially hearing whether the queue size had been decreased recently. It seems like it has.
I am perplexed as to how Dark Age of Camelot had more people in WvWvW 10 years ago and we didn’t even know what ‘culling’ was because it never happened, yet a modern game using vastly superior internet connections and CPUs can’t handle more than 30? people onscreen at once. See also Rift, another modern game where no one has ever even heard of ‘culling’ because it never happens, yet it can also have massive matchups in open world PvP (as well as much PvE action).
Neither DAoC nor Rift ever had the strange ability lag you get in truly massive matchups either (although GW2 has apparently reduced the WvW maximum amounts so far now that we never get that many players at once anymore).
Overall I am disappointed that GW2’s design is somehow unable to handle what is truly needed for fun WvW matchups. WvW is still fun, sort of, but I do miss the huge brawls we had way back when WvW first started, even if they were a crazyfest of ability lag and culling – they sort of worked
I’ll refrain from judging whether they’ll ever fix these issues, because hey, there’s always the future. I doubt I’ll be playing much WvW anymore in its current state, but there’s always other stuff to do so it all works out
Qalciut, Rawtor Rendfist, Qavril, Vertabran, Qxxl, Qorval, Qamtel, Qevxl
WvW only abilities based on rank?
slippery slope?
Not if they’re, for example, stomps based on rank similar to /rank in GW1. I could see that as you rank up you get new stomps. That would be sweet.
Please take a long hard look at your priorities ANet. Do you just want to support casuals only (which is fine) or are you going to support hardcore players that actually buy Gems? The latter by and large play WvW. But not for much longer unless you can start delivering.
I come from a smaller WvW server than most and we are currently usually the ones who get smacked around. The number of WvW players in our server are significantly lower. The player cap is the only thing that keeps us from getting completely dominated because at least on the weekends we have a fair fight.
“War does not determine who is right – only who is left.”
I am disappointed that wvw changes are getting pushed back a month but at the same time I would rather it work when released then have it shoved out the door to appease the people who can’t wait.
As for ESO, so what. People saying eso will kill gw2 will be on the eso boards sayin CU will kill eso. It’s the same thing on all the time with every game.
It was 2 vs 20 but its ok we got’em both!
Ugh, well can’t they at least add some hot fix for the queue issue? It just can’t be that overhelmely difficult to think of something. Showing aproximate queue time would already do wonders.
hey, but we will get new racoons to kill the 26th!!!
Another question. Was this new PvE content that urgent, given the recen additions? More resources allocated to WvW to get these issues fixed quickily would have met everyone´s goals, as a little delay for yet more PvE content would not have been too serious.
Instead they decided to kick one more time to the long term client base.
Stay three months in a row without adding PvE content and that pool of users will go to play pandas. Fix the WvW content and you will have player for aaages (of Camelot)
Tons of chars. If only one day I manage to guess how to play any of them, I will post it here
Question:
Will our current progress in WvW (badges, kills, etc) count towards the future ranks/rewards in WvW or does everyone start on a clean slate?
