A day’s roaming on my ranger…. All these clips where recorded in the same hour or so. All the fight’s in between there I recorded. I met up with some random roamers who helped me win some nice fights, we didn’t use TS however. Be sure to leave any feedback

I swear, this has to be one of the, if not, the best roaming build out there IMO (excluding teefs… since… you know). Decent condi clear, huge condi bursts, tons of AoE, good mobility, awesome survivability and excellent kiting abilities! I’m really starting to like rangers >:)

I wouldn’t say it’s the best roaming build out there, but it can be quite effective, and is fun to play.

The primary weaknesses are the absence of reliable condition clearing and complete lack of a stun break or stability. In particular, if you get stun locked or perma immobed, you have no real escape options other than hoping you are somehow able to get a trap down to enter stealth, or you get a lucky empathic bond proc that manages to get rid of the immob.

In some situations, I think you may be better off using only two traps and slotting something like lightning reflexes. Healing spring is also a potential possibility, but difficult to utilize properly in roaming.

In any case, I like gimmick builds as much as the next guy, and it’s nice to see that these trap builds are quite functional in a roaming context. Now if only thief trap builds could be as good…

EDIT: I saw in your video you threw down that one trap and got no super speed or stealth. I’ve had that issue as well, but I don’t know what causes it. Glad to see it doesn’t only happen to me.

Also lol at your party mates being salty ><. That’s why I never group with randoms when roaming, you can’t count on people to know when to stick together and when to GTFO unfortunately.

And as someone who had once played a lot of trapper Ranger, torch has some really nice damage but very little utility. I find it better in PvP because you can cover a node with Bonfire. In WvW however I prefer Warhorn. This is just personal preference but I’m just letting you know that with Warhorn you get Fury + blast finisher and with enough precision (I’m full Rabid on my trapper) Hunter’s Call can apply a ton of bleeds. Hunter’s Call → Split Blade = roughly 20 – 25 bleeds. Flame Trap → Call Of The Wild to blast → some axe auto’s and you can build quite a bit of might. You lose that nice Torch Throw damage but Hunter’s Call coupled with Split Blade kind of makes up for the loss IMO. So consider giving it a shot some time!

As for the video, good to see you’re enjoying trapper so much. It wrecks Mesmers, Rangers and Thieves especially and those are some of the more common roaming professions. Also, that was a really nice Reef Drake F2 you landed on that Necro. Landing drake F2’s take some real practice.

Haha, once GW2 is on another sale I’ll buy an NA account I think… Hate being only able to see 1/2 of the GW2 community… Or 1/3… forgot china >.>

The roaming guys saw the video and realized that it wouldn’t fit my build to rez/stick together much. Also, they were just annoyed that they kept dying and needed to catch up with me :P

Also, you’re making warhorn seem very appealing for me. Gonna try it out! Have you tried it with HS? Getting a blast and leap finisher in the spring seems like some nice healing But then again… having perma burning on a target is also really nice. It just does so much damage and flame trap can’t get many ticks in usually :O

That was my most perfectly executed condi burst on ranger yet! Fear, entangle, drake F2, splitblade, flame trap, geomancy procs… <3

True, I’m gonna start using the healing spring and see how much better is. Having more condi clear is always great. Also, with sword/warhorn getting another leap and blast in that water field will yield ~7k healing…(?). But I really do want 3 traps when 2 traits and all my runes are based around it

Hi Holl,

I ran trapper for awhile and found it pretty fun… when the mechanics worked. Question about your build – I notice you run Rabid stats and was looking through your setup and the only thing that I saw which takes advantage of precision is Sharpened Edges. Considering this is primarily a condi build, it doesn’t seem like it’s worth it to run Rabid just to occasionally proc a relatively weak bleed trait. I know most Condi Rangers run full Dire to make them super tanky, I was just wondering what precision does for you in this build.

Echoing what Yams said, I eventually found myself way too susceptible to CC in my Trapper build and eventually dropped traps for Lightning Reflexes and Protect Me to break CCs and apply damage mitigation as trap stealth simply wasn’t saving me. Once I found out how much fun I could have with Sharpening Stones and Axe 2 into Dagger 5, I found a love for Krait Runes instead.

Well you are right that a stunbreak could save you sometimes, but my problem is, can you outrun/juke/avoid a zerg with a stunbreak? That extra 3 seconds of stealth has allowed me to get away so many time. Having 2 traits and your rune set all focused on traps means that taking 2 would be the most optimal. Not saying a stunreak wouldn’t be nice, but wolf fear, tons of protection and evades on weapon skills is enough IMO

About your Question: Now that you asked it, I was actually pretty surprised that there was only 1 thing that made use of the crit chance. It seems like a waste, but it’s a pretty good trait. First of all, full dire is boring :/ too tanky and nearly unkillable, second, who doesn’t like red numbers? (even if they say 400 xD?) and lastly: You hit a lot in this build. Bonfire, entangle, flame trap, splitblade, axe AA all have a chance to crit multiple times and that can rack up some nice extra bleeds

I’m surprised you said this since you are a top necro player too =p
I’m sure you know a good necro CAN and WILL very likely catch you in a chain fear burst.
Even sword dagger thieves run with at least one stun break.
