Q:
Need some help I am looking to make a new toon. I cannot for the life of me decide what to make. Any one know what classes seem to do well solo WvW? Just curious pros and cons
Really what I am most torn between is an Engineer or a Thief
(edited by Consequences.8365)
From my measly WvW experience (only rank 127 or so), Thieves are an excellent choice, as are Ele’s. I see a lot of guardians and warriors as well. Surprisingly, I also see a healthy amount of rangers.
In the end, as far as roaming solo goes, viability would go something like this:
Thief>Warrior>Ele>Guardian>Engineer>Necro>Mesmer>Ranger
I’m sure many people will point out why I’m completely wrong, however. And they will probably be right.
pu mesmer >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> thief > rest
most classes have a roaming build, comes down to what you can play best (i main a condi necro and have little trouble with any class). that said, pu mesmer will destroy most other players of a similar skill level. thief is pretty faceroll also.

If you dont mind me asking would you share your Necro build I am struggling with that I have been wanting to find a good build for soloing with my necro
Before you discount engineer, watch both of these:

Epic videos my problem is I just cannot find or figure out a good build for the engineer
well played engies can certainly be quite ouchie. but so can other professions.
Why would you get close to death in a rabid condi build
Thief and Warrior are probably the easiest roamers because they can escape just about any situation and reset just about any fight.
Mesmers are powerful but slow. They can be slippery but once they burn out of their 3 or so escape skills they are dead in the water against a superior force. Necros can also be great solo fighters when played well but lack any form of escape.
Eles were once the greatest of roamers but numerous nerfs have left them in limbo. To be bunker, they have to give up a lot of damage. To get damage they have to give up most of their bunker. To be fast they have to give up a little of both.
Guardians, Rangers can make OK roamers but fall off my list for a variety of factors.
Between the two, I’d go Engi. Engi’s can be downright scary roaming when they’re the enemy.
Too many thieves already too.
you don’t just make an engi though. you’ll get kittened on if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing
The easy answer is thief but than there one of the reasons people zerg regrettably.

I agree with this. Engi isn’t so much a class as a lifestyle. The same goes for Ele’s (I roam with both, and couldn’t imagine someone new to the class having an easy time.)
A well played Engi is a force of nature. People who just play/alt engis tend to be free bags in the roaming scene.
A class with good mobility or Stealth and who have good self sustainability like Engis, Thieves, Warriors, Mesmers and certain Ranger builds from what I’ve seen myself really, so that you can get away from tough situations, which is often in WvW.

from my experience
1) Thief and warrior are the easier to play, with a condi build they are even easier.
2) Mesmer and necro are easy to play but are slow (you can invest in some runes tho).
3) Ranger has few interesting builds but has hard times against the aboves.
4) Ele and Engi are the hardest classes to master, those are my favorite classes to play with and against.
5) Guardian… some say it’s agood class for roaming but I don’t remember to have ever lost against one of them in 1vs1, if you can manage your dodges good they cannot kill you.

All classes are viable roaming professions given you know how to play them.
Thief, Mesmer, Ranger, Warrior and Engineer are some of the “easier” professions to roam with. I say “easier” because they are better equipped to roam than the other professions but that does not mean they are better.
Personally, I rotate between my Ranger and my Necromancer, both of which do exceptionally well when solo roaming. Again, it all comes down to personal experience so don’t rule out other professions just because they might seem less capable.
Regardless of which profession you choose however, there are a few things all of them need when roaming;
1. Mobility. The most important thing you can have when by yourself. You want to cross lengthy distances quickly, get in and out and be able to slip away before the enemy can respond. Which ever profession you choose, have some form of mobility whether it be a signet/runes that give 25% movement speed, swiftness or leaps, bring something with you.
2. Control. The second most important thing, and the last thing required when roaming is control. If you can’t fear, stun, daze, launch, or any of the other CC’s, your roaming experience will be much more difficult. Control is important because it can mean preventing enemies from escaping, or ensuring that you escape. It’s also great for flipping camps.
So, in conclusion:
The easiest, but not the best professions to grasp when roaming are: Thief, Mesmer, Ranger, Warrior and Engineer.
What you need when roaming is:
Mobility and control, which every profession has access to in some form or another.
And of course, a level head to navigate hostile territory ( :
