Was the intention to not reward servers?
It is the principle of winning. Bragging rights and a legacy can go a long way

I’m the only person that was upset about this?
FA is now holding it’s own against Gold League servers and YB is beating SBI and Mag (who actually would’ve made silver league interesting) this week. But that’s irrelevant because FA was put into Silver League.
I seriously hope that someone, anyone from Anet is watching this and realizes how stupid the league was.
I wasn’t hear for the season, I honestly don’t care that much about who wins and loses, because like you say it’s a numbers game. I play to have fun, when I do play that is. I see both sides of it here, the top players get rewarded and get a unique reward. They get to be special for a season with their fancy finishers, they did work hard.
But I do agree that trying deserves a reward. It’s not political correctness and everyone needs to feel special, not all, though most would accuse me of it. It’s because this is a game. And game should be fun and rewarding. Why not have a thanks for playing trophy, err, finisher? Some people put a lot of effort into the game and I feel they should be rewarded even if they come in last. Why? To keep them playing and coming back. It’s like a slot machine will pay out a little just to keep a person playing. By the sounds of it the rewards were pretty bland as it is. I think it be funny to give everyone a dud type finisher… like a number 1 that just falls over in the animation (season one failure type joke), while the winners get something awesome and flashy and shiny like shiny 1 that spins and drops on their target. Or bounces or something neat.

I think it’s fairly apparent that Arenanet overestimated the ability of lower-ranked servers to take the #1 spot in each league, so which servers ended up with the finisher reward were pretty much known from the start.
still, league play was a lot of fun anyway, because even if you had no shot at coming in first place, you still didn’t want your server coming in lower in the league rankings than your hated rivals. our server played hard every week just to come in second place in each match, not because we thought we had a chance at the finisher, but simply for server pride. or the sweet tears of our enemies. one of those.

We didn’t know who was going to win our league at the start. It took at least 2-3 hours.

Not going to argue with you because I don’t really care one way or the other. But, I did want to point out that regardless of how pointless you think the league was, it gave WvW the most meaning it’s ever had. Even if that isn’t saying much.

That’s my biggest fear, that WvW will just go back and be significant to those that only enjoy that type of game rather than open to all other folks who play for different reasons.
Another thing… Anet should have TOLD us the reward going into the season, particularly if they were going to underwhelm us with the reward. I don’t believe Anet should ever again not tell us an award before a season starts.

Funny how that works out right? Those rumors of FA sandbagging into silver that flew around for weeks come to mind…bring it up to a die hard wvw FA player, it always ensures a good time.

Even the biggest die hard FA fan can’t deny what’s plain to see, lol.
They dropped a tier, they won their little kids league matches, they got their precious winners reward, they ponded on theoir chest yelling how great they are and now they are getting beaten again by TC.
All is exacly like is was before!

Leagues weren’t about winning. Leagues were about attracting players who had left the game to come back are participate in it again. They were about getting new people to try the game who wouldn’t normally play it. They may have been about financial gain from wvw to see if wvw warrants investing more funding, or the return of investment by updating the current wvw model.
IMO, wvw is broken on several fronts, namely coverage wars (night time protection) and how ppt works. Until they fix this, seasons are just unbalanced for everyone except the top servers in each catagory. It seems like a catch 22 – they can’t update this until they get more funding, but they can’t get more funding until more players invest time/money in wvw. The latter is only achievable on scale with development by the amount of players involved in wvw.
Rewards are the least of the problems but the biggest problem for the consumer as it has direct relation to the desire to play wvw for many players (ie. zerg vs zerg, “Look at all those bags waiting to be collected” is something I hear a lot). Why would anyone say anything like that unless that expect something (a reward). Anet only recently increase reward from drops and from rank-up chests. They still have a long way to go imo.
I’m taking a casual break for the next 6 months. I will play on reset nights for fun, but won’t commit more than 5 hours a week until they fix the biggest problems in wvw, and rewards is at the bottom of my list atm.

I have to agree. If we get a flood and the waters start rising, I know I can get a lot of advice from Fort Aspenwood

That may be true, but how many people do you think they lost due to the overpowered match-ups and the lackluster rewards? I like the game for the fights, but when you get blown out every week it makes it hard to want to play. ANet just gave many players a reason to quit.
This was a awful organization for the first season. And is not a inexperienced one. Was obvious before the league start. Is like a improvised organization during a lunch with friends, or worse.
A lot of bad and unfair matchup (you cant put in the same league 9 ranks together in this game, the difference is a lot between them)
If you dont fight for first place, dont fight at all. You win the same if you are 5 or 6 rank, or 2. In the next season if they keep the same reward system who is not fighting for the first place is out of competition (no good ranking or position table for encourage besides the reward). That was a VERY VERY BAD decision.
Please, common sense next time… and please, take seriously your work, people actually pay for this game, the errors of the first season was all avoidable with common sense.
Anet has no idea how to manage incentives in WvW: this is not news.
