Sorry Anet and GW2 community, but we really need to talk about WvW population, especially with HoT on the way with new borderland maps instead of a new central map.

SO that will spread population even more thin…

think about that. with current population issues in place as is, do we really need more thinning without solutions to population issues?

How about simply having mergers of servers? whats wrong with that?

We’re not getting MORE maps. Our current borderlands are being replaced. Same population issues will continue to persist. ANet will continue to ignore the problem.

and with HoT release, factions will want to play on their server’s map rather than on enemy borderlands… spreading the population thinner than it already is.

Whats the point of new Borderland maps with there isnt anybody to fight against because they rather play on their own borderland map?

I’d wait and see. The new expansion will bring in a ton of new bodies, and nicely fill out all those maps.

It’s your job, as a community, to retain them.

Take time to teach and mentor.

Then no more empty maps. Make WvW appealing, not antagonistic. Squash the ones being negative, and offer to help instead.

Worst case? If the enemy won’t come to you, go to them.

Because even on low pop servers, many have developed strong communities that they don’t want arbitrarily merged with others by Anet. Many players on those communities also prefer a lower pop environment.

There was a lot of talk about potential solutions in the CDI thread on population imbalances about a year ago (warning, long thread):

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/Solution-to-fix-the-population-imbalance/first

I wouldn’t say there was necessarily a consensus, but many players seemed open to the idea of being able to form “alliances” (essentially, self-formed server merges). Functionally this would be similar to the current server system, just slightly more dynamic and potentially based around seasons.

@OP

I agree with you about the current population issues.

Current Base Map Mechanic used in our WvW Alpine Map is flawed in my opinion and causes many of the population issues that’s been discussed here.

I’ll hold judgement on the New HoT WvW Maps until I’ve had a chance to see if the Base Map Mechanic has changed…which is doubtful.

If the Base Map Mechanic hasn’t changed…then the same old issues and proposed Band-Aid solutions will show up in the WvW forums again.

Server stacking is the issue…

I’m sending you a link to an article that discusses a proposed Base Map Mechanic change…so you can continue your thread discussion here without distraction.

@BrickFurious

I agree…there are low population servers that have a strong WvW communities that make it a badge of honor to continue to fight on against underdog scenarios.

For which…I’d like to proposed the following idea:

…Loyalty Counter – Every (250-500) WvW Ranks earns Bonus Chest. Resets to Zero if WvW Home Globe Changes.

Oh well…the WvW community here can only hope that with HoT…things will change.

I will ask ANet to consider changing the Base Map Mechanic that is the source of a majority of the issues brought up here…one of which…are population issues.

I wouldn’t think about anything regarding the future of WvW. We have to wait and see how things develop…and there was a post about putting more work into the development of WvW after the release of HoT. I still don’t know if this is good or bad or even going to happen! :P Sry Anet.

Your working on a false premise here if you ask me. We will not be dealing with the current population. We will be dealing with a greatly increased population, due to all the returning and new players that come with an expansion.

in my opinion, 2 weeks before an expansion is the worst time to discuss current population. Particularly in reference to a new map

We can hope that the xpac will bring tons more bodies, but we can’t be sure of that. If it does bring old players back, and keeps them interested that’s the ideal. If it brings them back, but we lose them again, then they will need to look at something more drastic.

I agree about going where the action is though. We need to really promote more action with the newer players to keep their interest.
