I have always thought WvW lacked ‘care factor’ but this seems to have gotten worse, not better, with the recent changes. What are we as servers fighting over, what is the point? Where is the competition? Yes we all go out and play for the ‘fight’, but I can do that in any PvP game.

Obviously the rankings is supposed to be what we fight over, striving to be the #1 server in NA. Unfortunately ANET’s position on coverage, free transfers, etc has made rankings more about coverage and population than good play and strategy and thus it became an unimportant achievement for most players. I would guess outside of the top 1-4 servers, there is very few people that even think about being #1. So while this was bad before, now it seems even more silly given that BG is taking #1 spot because of match-up RNG rewarding them with more glicko then SoR. I do not play on BG but it seems like the sense of accomplishment of becoming #1 would be greatly diminished in this system.

Rankings were at least a bit important in the old system as far as your tier placement, as it dictated who you would be fighting. I never cared about being #1 server, but I did care about having a competitive match, so I would watch and my interest in PPT would vary based on the likelihood of changing who we would fight the following week. The match-up RNG has removed this aspect entirely.

Rivalries were something that drove battles and competition, in my opinion more so then most anything else in this game. Long periods of fighting the same opponents helped build those rivalries. While I am not opposed to some mixing of the fights, the new system has no real capacity for big rivalries, imo.

So that leaves the ‘match’, fighting to win the match, get the most PPT. This is something worth fighting for in a close match, of which we have 1 in all of north america, in a blow out it is as unimportant as anything else.

So as I see it we have a RNG lottery that might give one match-up a reason to care about PPT, once per week. The rest of the week we just try and get the most personal entertainment we can out of a lopsided match.

Agree. I also think “server pride” means nothing. Unless I personally benefit from WvW in some way, I don’t see a reason for playing.

I think we will have to see more of the “RNG” matches to see how it plays out but I think they are good in some ways. Trust me when I say the rivalry between BG and SoR is still there but the break away was good. It was getting pretty toxic and in no way healthy competition. After following both SoRs and BGs match up threads it seem everyone is in high spirits and hopefully this caries over into our future matches.

As far as rating gos, at this point its a joke. So far the only people that have been talking about the rating is a select few from SoR. I understand you’re “losing” your rank based off a poor RNG but there is 2 ways you can/should look at it. The rank means nothing other then a different % when rolling servers. Also if rating was that big a deal for SoR TW would have stayed on SoR and you would have pushed TC and SoS harder to keep that ranking. Which isn’t that far apart right now.

Server “pride” is still a large motivator for me personally, but with the new RNG based matchups, server ranking as measured by Glicko ranking means much less to me now, if not borderline meaningless. The real measurement of “rank” now is who your server beats heads up. I think many got overly caught up in the Millenium site and medal count, myself included.

In the end though, my primary motivator is still the same. It’s those nights when your favorite commander is running your squad, moving around the map as a tight unit, and engaging groups of enemy players on the field and at keeps and towers. It’s the thrill of that, and the uncertainty of the outcome of each encounter, that keeps me playing, and why I still care.

It’s pretty much about server pride from the start. You get enough material gain to cover armor repairs just fine but don’t think you’re going to make “kiss my kitten” money from WvWvW. I never cared about rankings, the design of WvWvW makes that meaningless, it’s pretty much coverage wars and the higher tier servers just have more people doing it(whether it’s their original server or not is pointless) and showing up isn’t really what I’d consider an accomplishment.

I feel similarly, if it wasn’t for the comedy that is our Teamspeak I’d probably be less inclined to play. We had pretty much everything a few hours into reset and the large battles and little skirmishes turn out in our favor for the most part even when we’re sandwiched between, so that thrill is diminishing. It’s starting to feel like some kind of failed experiment.

I agree completely, the game lacks a lot of motivation. WXP and the rewards are next to useless for me.

What motivates me is skirmishing. The thing that GW2 does better than just about every game I have played is small scale combat. This makes sense considering the tPvP aspect of the game (which I don’t really like). The combat is fluid, and challenging. Mechanics can always use improvements and balancing, but for the most part skirmishing on a small scale is just really fun.

So what motivates me to WvW nearly every day since the release of the game? Fighting and killing other players.

You’re supposed to be playing for rating although no where in game does it show you your server’s rating or how much you are gaining or losing.

So sometimes when you think you’re winning, you’re actually losing and when you think you’re losing, you’re actually winning.

Make sense? It really doesn’t.
