What can a WvW newb do for starters?
For defense: Catapult put behind the door (usually near supply depot of the keep or tower), put 1 arrow cart beside it (for continuous damage).
I think BL is the better place to start.
Hello, here are some basic starting ideas for you. They are my own ideas only so please take them with a grain of salt.
- Follow a successful zerg to begin with. As you run all over the map to raid and pillage, you’ll get a basic idea of everything.
- Go into a tower/keep and look at the upgrades and costs. If it is currently being upgraded (event to say protect workers), “guard” the place until upgrade is done to get a feel for how the yaks, supply, and upgrades work. Understand first hand why taking supply from a tower/keep might be a very bad idea.
- Anytime you visit a place loaded with defensive siege weapons, try them all out. Feel free to ask the defenders how they ought to be used. However please leave the mortars, catapults, and trebs in the same angle as before.
After all that it’s just observation to pick up things that you feel is useful to know. If you find all the waiting stuff is too boring, see if there are any small skirmishing 5-men groups that you can join up with.
Hope this helps a little.
The great thing about WvW is that you can go in there and contribute no matter how “pro” you are. You say you’re new, and the only way to really learn is by immersion, so immerse yourself.
If you’re not good at destroying people and take no pleasure in /laughing on top of their corpse like I do, equip group abilities. Heal people. Raise people who need raised.
While it’s not overly complicated in there, there is a learning curve. You have to figure out what the supplies are about. When you should take them from a tower or a camp or a keep or even the castle.
There’s so much to do in there. You can play with siege weapons, run around and scout, swim around in the water and pick clams. Whatever you wanna do! When you start to understand how it works in there, you can start doing the boring, but important things. The other day I spent probably half an hour running back and forth from a camp to a wall just to help this other guy repair it. That’s the kind of things you do when you want to win the game and your team is full of mindless zerg monsters dreaming of karma points.
You gotta watch it in there, though. The time flies when you’re having fun.
The two things I would suggest that you do:
Join the zerg and follow it. Try to figure out what all the different names are of the locations and where they are. This will take awhile. You want to become more comfortable with the map.
Go to a keep under siege and join the defenses by using an arrowcart. When you use siege equipment you -really- help your team. Build your own (buy an arrowcart from one of the siege vendors ) and put it down. That way you will be the one controlling it and you start learning about placing siege things.
As to the where: Try everything.
On my server, Tarnished Coast, we have regulars in Eternal and then the borderlands. Some people prefer Eternal (I tend to stay in Eternal although I visit the borderlands regularly) and some prefer the Borderlands.
The goal of WvW in my view: To have fun. Do whatever it is that brings you joy and helps your team. As you learn the land you will probably have met a few players who play around when you do so you can join up with them and form a small band that takes supply points and sentries. You can even take towers that are undefended with two or three people. This really saps the morale of the opposing side!
repair walls and build weapons on walls. dont listen to terrible commanders when they say not to, they honestly dont know what theyre talking about.
1. Always carry supplies with you (indicated next to the timer at the top of your screen) you can only carry 10 supplies and should use every opportunity to refill that supply.
Preferably you should take supplies from supply camps fully supplied (you’ll see an indicator) keeps and towers. Try to avoid taking supplies from contested towers and low-supply buildings unless necessary.
Supplies allow you to build, repair and construct various siege equipment as well as walls and keep upgrades (that’s why people like to maintain a healthy level of supplies in their keeps).
2. Follow the Zerg
I think one thing that we can do better (as WvW addicts) is to better reach out to the newer players. When I played WvW the first time, I had no idea what I was doing (the charr guide dude doesn’t help at all), ran around by myself and got slaughtered like 5 times in 15 minutes… didn’t play WvW for another 2 weeks. When you are on yak duty, or when guilds are tasked with upgrading/defending objectives, for example, they can shoot a map message offering to help newer players with WvW (or maybe in lion’s arch). I will try to do this too when I am in.
One of the things that I don’t see many people do, that which is really important for WvW, is simply communication. When you’re in WvW, please relay ANY information that you might think could be useful. Things like, where the enemies are coming from, what keep is being taken, how much health a gate has, etc, are VERY important information in which everyone should do their best to relay.
Many times in WvW, I will see keeps being taken because no one called for support, or an area getting surprised attack, because the people that saw the enemies gave no warning. In WvW, it’s really all about strategy and not skill. With strategy, communication is key.
join public TS/Vent/Mumble server if they have one. (Ask in /Map/Team)
don’t take supplies from keeps except in emergency wall/door repairs.
Group up, move together if not a solo friendly class especially.
Give as accurate numbers as possible and be clear with locations and directions when scouting.
GL and Have fun!
I’ll show you exactly what a Mesmer can do, SS cost extra.
I’ve noticed a few people saying never take supply from a keep. While this is true 99% of the time, if your keep is being attacked and the battle could go either way, feel free to take supply to build last second siege on the walls. >.>
Whats the point of having a base full of supply if you lose the base.
Also, if your team is losing or outmanned, get a small group of people and take out their supply dolyaks. No supply = no upgrades = easier to retake base.

Thank you all for your input. Three questions, though.
1. How do people tell how damaged is a wall/door? Just by guesstimating the length of the ‘health’ bar? Or by some other way, and I’m missing it?
2. Is it Ok to take supply from a keep if it is uncontested, has a regular yak dropping supply to it, and I have blueprints and I need supply to build siege weapons there?
3. The base I’m in is under attack. Should I spend it’s resources on building extra defensive weapons or to repair the door the enemy is slamming?
Thank you.

your math is incorrect
i think the best idea is to run around some time with the zerg and join the raid ts. after a while you’ll get the hang of it and even command a little squad or something
wvwvw is not complicated you only have to be able to think a bit

This is all subjective to the situation.
1) You guesstimate, it’s quite easy to see it at quarter intervals, just round up or down.
2) NEVER take supply from a keep even if, it is tier 3, uncontested and seems like it will be for a while and has regular Yaks going to it. Under no circumstances do you take supply from it if its mid upgrade or on the front line. If you need siege built in there, there is always a nearby camp, it’s 60 seconds there and back so just run. Keep the supply there for when it does come under attack.
3) Again this depends. If you have a damaged gate but the rams are down and there is just a disorganized mass then Siege. If the gate is going down and reinforcements are on the way but the gate needs repairs for them to reach in time, gate. All supply should be used depending on the situation so we cant give you a straight yay or nay situation.
Suck it up and join sPvP. This was the biggest help to my WvW play. Learn what you can do to kill people. After all, war is not about dying for your country, its about making the poor kitten on the other side of the field die for his country.
If you are really timid, go to the north side of the PvP island and fight the AI there (there is one for each class). Learn how to beat them. Once you have done that, you can fare well in sPvP. Go in to sPvP.
Don’t go in to sPvP to win. Go in to learn. You will die. There are no repair costs. You can monkey with your build and then go in again. It is PERFECT for tuning your abilities in pvp.
Once you have done that, then I would recommend staying away from EB. Do a BL. If you like an uphill fight, do an opposing BL. If you like fighting from a solid footing, do your own BL.
Find a competent leader and stick with them. See what needs to be done. Learn to listen and anticipate. Learn to grab supply. etc…
