See how many times someone from anet posted about acknowledging the issue and updating on the progress of fixing it. This is nothing new of course. But when we constantly post about issues like bugs, glitches, exploits….we usually get nothing. Honestly I am fed up with waiting for them to attempt a fix that often fails anyways.

Devs who actually want to get involved with WvW and the playerbase. Do something about lag. Overhaul siege. Class balance. Faster fixes for bugs, glitches, and exploits. Rework how they implement server linking.

1. Fix Skill lag which probably isn’t possible
2. Legendary Back item.
3. Mistforged Hero’s weapons reward track.
4. Maybe another WvW reward track that focuses more on siege.

Either way I’m going to keep playing, hopefully they add more rewards and ways too use the currency.

Unless they separate the balance between PvE and WvW we’ll never see big nerfs to anything that could potentially hurt PvE. The change in the Signet of Inspiration and Facet of Nature already caused a lot of revolt on PvE. And keep in mind that PvE is the big chunk of the population in this game, so I don’t expect them to “hurt” the game mode played by most people in favor of balancing the game for a minority.

Add new map where siege can’t be placed, fewer objectives to hide behind and smaller map for more focused action. Instead, there can be pre-placed trebs like in pvp that you have to use to break into objectives, forcing fights at specific locations.

Power creep is power creep. Doesn’t matter what format may or may not benefit from it. HoT was marketed and sold to not have any/minimal power creep, and that objective has not been met a year later. If PvE gets nerfed, it shouldn’t matter. And if skills and professions get reworked, it’s because they largely need to be because often times the things that break PvE and WvW are one and the same at the end of the day.

The PvE revolt is because something OP got nerfed. Raids didn’t get made any harder. Diversity isn’t really any better or worse. If they nerf power creep, and raids are too hard, nerf the raids. If reworks put a profession/build out of the meta in PvE, it’s probably a reason.

The PvE meta-abiding sheep will complain about literally anything. They complained about the arbitrary lack of diversity from the so-called berserker meta, when the entire thing was made up by the PvE community and when there was tons of workable diversity game-wide. They set the tone for their own imbalance a majority of the time, because they balance to the optimal performance of speed clearing because they want more loot faster.

The encounters don’t change in PvE. The meta will never change as a consequence. There’s zero reason to balance for PvE because unless encounter design changes, literally nothing else will unless things are balanced around it. But that’s kind of stupid considering such changes need to be major and as seen in the changes to revenant and mesmer as of lately, they’re just going to be upset even when nothing actually changes (Revenant usefulness still proven mathematically incapable of being surpassed by another profession).

Make the score matter more. No one is going to hold a camp or escort a yak, etc. if the score doesn’t matter.

Also, reduce the AOE damage on top of walls. Pretty stupid the defenders can’t actually defend because of splash damage.

I think what the community wants is shown in this topic: everyone wants different things to be addressed and some people have a hard time understanding that their opinion may be a minority or a bad idea in the context of the whole game (and I admit, I am struggling with that as well myself sometimes).

I think what all WvW guys want is to be taken seriously. I think the WvW community would be happier if Arenanet had someone on this forums to talk, publish their positions, react on good ideas etc. if possible someone from inside the WvW scene. It is easier to understand why something isn’t changed if we know “why” or that they are working on it etc. It wouldn’t change the game itself, but it would change our perception of it.

Things like class balance isn’t any kind of problem because you can always level up new character or make new gear. Siege isn’t problem because everybody can build their own siege. Real problem is that other side have always 50 % more players, fighting is totally pointless and there isn’t any reason even try to win a match.

The core issue of WvW is its problem with population of players. Most of the time with the lack of it.

There would be some easy (IMHO for the first two things involving dailies & gmissions) methods to get more people to play WvW or make them more interested in it:

Adjustments to dailies (a lot of people do them!)
>> Remove Keep Cap from the list (you can’t do it alone unless you go to EoTM and run with a train; but we want people to populate the regular maps
>> double the respawn times of Veterans, half their current reward (If people would see those more regularly during normal game play, they would not camp the spawns far away from the action)
>> Reduce the World Ranker to one level (the two levels are a relic from when liquid WxP dropped and could be bought with laurels)

==> easier access to WvW content and a good chance to chose it over a PvE/PvP option

Adjustments to guild missions
>> Remove the minimum requirement of Land Claim & Dolly escort missions. This way the missions can be done alone or across severs within guilds (people would do a lot more dolly escorts & would shift the hide and be seen game via the sentries on maps)
>> Cut the WxP needed for the WvW ranker missions by 50% to make it more accessible and on par with the rank gain missions in PvP. (again, people in the guild, divided by servers could still work on this together by playing at the same time)

Guild (Hall) involvement
>> use the Guild Anthem functionality for WvW too. (this restores some guild identity)
>> Reduce the costs of Badges of Tribute towards decorations in scribing from 100 to 10, so the costs are not that insane and you can actually craft a few of them without removing your siege currency
>> Add more fancy decorations that need WvW supplies (e.g. siege decorations in GH made with blueprints)

Worlds
>> Make the world bonus everyone gets and hardly notices scale/unlock with your personal involvement in WvW (e.g. the world bonus is locked until you do at least two dailies)

We want stuff to get fixed, and the game to actually get better.

-Less AOE/cleaves being spammed, so players need to l2p, atm gw2 is the most dumb online game (skill rebalance would even make pvp way much better).
And then boost/improve classes for aoe gameplay like ele/necro.

-Some structures need to be revaluated:
EB towers.
Every keep in desert BL.
Walls are to easy to AOE, when in this game keeps are already builted in valeys…
Some walls get damage in places where u cant built siege to defend that mountain wall the the closest place to drop siege is easilly aoed even pre built siege wont work
Anet needs to stop the dumb gameplay and low effort mmo.

What do players want? Everything and now. Which is impossible to grant in reality. :S

So I will preface this: all things end. It should be a goal to make the limited time more valuable, and fun. By now, if we are going by active population in WvW, the game mode did not age well. So it is better to ask why that is. The answers will be systemic, and hard to fully discuss in a single post. If we take player’s topics in this forum, half will be probably be useless to a developer, and most of the rest will be symptoms. Going off of those symptoms as a direction you end up with feature creep that ultimately only masks the illness, and gets perceived as directionless.

My long answer to OP:

1. Matchups/Servers:

A. The big issue is going with a 1v1v1 matchup that takes all the cons of a 1v1 and gives only “the illusion of variety” as a pro. Snowballing still occurs, and as is seen now, we end up with a squabble for 2nd place with two middling (or less) servers matched to a giant. The elephant is that the servers themselves could never handle a full three way fight.

B. People’s concerns with server identity. I will get hate for this, but merging should have occurred over this linking concept that requires upkeep from ANET. The idea of community would actually shift to the Guilds themselves. See Guild Wars 1.

C. Coverage/population balance, that comes with people’s initial interest in persistent pvp modes. I see this more in NA servers, but this idea of persistent doesn’t take into account peoples’ actual playing time. A huge chunk of NA will play for a 4-6 hour time-slot, and end up losing everything outside of that prime-time (the current score system only masked it up better). Lastly, there is a chunk of players in off hours who are not even matched up together, but inadvertently caused this disruption in coverage.

2. Maps

A. The only variety you will get from this game-mode is through maps. It is what directly affects player behavior. Making new maps is always an option. Because of the 1v1v1 we are limited in options for maps that are balanced on their own. The current three copies of the somewhat asymmetrical Home Borderlands systems fails since it relies on a balanced population 24/7 across all of them. This relates to coverage, and the 1v1v1 matchup so you know how systemic these issues are.

B. Circular-ish map design lends itself to Ktraining. With a 1v1v1 you will almost always get some form this. It is clearly apparent in Eotm. In the past it was performed in the Home Borderlands on Friday, and during the initial release of notaries it was seen on Eternal Battlegrounds. Even in non-full ktrains the third lowest server’s common option is to attack unoccupied objectives of the two larger teams (the basic Ktrain).

C. Switching to 1v1 maps offers more flexibility, and allows for a better scenario in case balance is necessary. If you were not here before, the initial Alpine-Borderlands underwent revisions (about 3-4 times), in addition to Desert Borderlands. To put it bluntly, the center of the asymmetrical 1v1v1 is cursed. So cease it, and transition towards 1v1.

3. Game play Loop

A. WvW has not aged well. One way is the siege playstyle, and how it is heavily inconsistent. Firstly, is the balanced battle over an objective that takes up most of a guild’s raid. Secondly, the ktrain where the objective is unoccupied. Finally, the off hour nothing where no side has much of any presence. Another systemic link is because had there been population balance the players once stuck in off hour would be fighting others. In addition time to siege increased by feature creep and progression: tactivators, passive guild upgrades, shield gens, cannons, and still trebs.

B. Separate balance for WvW. This is in hopes of facilitating future balance while making the fighting experience more valuable. With this long term decision it should in theory let balance be made by the potential WvW team.

C. Progression is a concern that is going to sound counter intuitive. The way it was handled in WvW could be considered feature creep since it was to appease people. There is also the gear itself where optimization requires even more time spent outside of WvW. Taking a step back, I think it is better to say people want recognition for their in-game achievements not necessarily statistical advantage. Too much statistical progression is a barrier to entry for new players, who will go to Eotm and probably stay.

TLDR: And it’s hella long! Read the bold only, but WvW has many connected issues that cannot be easily surmised in a single post, and probably not even a single five minute video. Sorry, it takes effort to fix! Try doing game art or programming! It all requires more than this post did.

The problem is the skills are the main issue, a third map sometime might be nice but that’s not a pressing issue.

The HoT update and skills overhaul was massively biased towards PvE/raids with no thought to sPvP or WvW. It nearly killed WvW with huge numbers of people leaving. Now the skills of some builds are massively over powerful, Mesmer, Thief, and a few others have builds that are nearly impossible to take down.

What WvW needs is a purpose.

What many of us have wished for from the beginning is that WvW be a serious competitive game-mode(with all the balance related things people have already listed).

Right now playing WvW does not matter, playing WvW skillfully does not matter. Winning the week does not matter. Winning outnumbered fights, or PPTing better than anyone else does not matter.

Now imagine if WvW had the structural framework to give a purpose to doing WvW. Skirmishes were a baby step in that direction, but have lacked any sort of follow up at all.

Make winning matter, make playing well matter. Give people a reason to be in WvW and give them a reason to improve their play.

3) Rewards that are actually nice and good (ascended stuff, backpieces, …)
4) Have all skills unlocked for WvW (Like Spvp)

Just pick your weapons, sigils, runes and an amulet.
This would make it easier to balance classes + they can keep the rewards / loot that they have as it can be used for people their Pve Mode chars.

More frequent but small balance and skill adjustments between the large patches. Having fairly long times between balance patches just leads to a lot of disappointment when nothing is tweaked to about 95% of what we see each play session. This last balance patch changed almost nothing… same meta builds with a handful of fairly minor tweaks. We are basically playing the same meta for months on end.

There is absolutely no reason sPvP should drive WvW meta. Make small and constant tweaks to WvW build balance, what works move to sPvP between seasons what doesn’t tweak again.

The sPvP system is horrible from a diversity perspective, though, and doesn’t scale with the number of players. Not only will professions be excluded from certain elements (as in you won’t see a thief or ranger taken to the front lines of a blob), but the number of viable options within sPvP by stat distribution systems alone is less than in WvW.

If anything, they need to bring WvW/PvE stats in sPvP and go from there. Things not dying or killing too quickly? Well, now it’s in sync with the rest of the game. Things seem broken in terms of how they’re used? Well, it’s probably time to reconsider what the skill does or how it works since it’s probably poorly-designed.

Sad truth is ANet’s not willing to put in the work to re-design anything or willing to take the flak from PvE players who just assume that power creep is fine and nothing else matters except their ability to kill mobs quickly.

Anet is more concerned with improving the game mode than what the players are interested in. From my experience a vast majority of players just want fights. Anet wants you to defend and take towers. Sadly, anet has succeeded mostly. Most players these days are happy with blobbing other servers down and winning fights by placing siege (which is fine to an extent).

I guess my main issue is I am unhappy that ANET has created a culture of casual wvw players and they think adding mobile cannons will make wvw a better experience.

I do give Anet credit for overall wvw balance. Though it could be better, in general its a fun experience.

Overall I just want to have the wvw team to have the same vision as the majority of wvw players.

I hope to see a red post here or in the WvW forum in general.
If Anet would at least tell us what they are working on, with a reply to what people have been discussing here.

The reason that we see a lot of posts regarding “we want this and that” or “this has to change” is because we get no input from the dev team.

Dont get me wrong, I appreciate a lot of the stuff they have done for the last several months, but there is always that feeling of a disconnect and misunderstanding of the player base and wvw.

1) Fix siege – (range, damage, …)
2) WvW is about PvP not trebbing one tower from the other …
3) Rewards that are actually nice and good (ascended stuff, backpieces, …)
4) Have all skills unlocked for WvW (Like Spvp)
5) Bring back the old upgrade system
6) Fix the landscape
7) Fix the towers and keeps (what walls can be hit and what not) Makes no sense Anza = every wall can be destroyed.
8) Fix the kittenm SKILL LAG!

Also bring back the Quaggans and the lighting strikes that destroy siege on the Borderlands.

Few items from top of my head. Some have been mentioned in this thread already.

  • Server population balance; server linking is not good enough
  • Glory rewards for individual players and guilds (unique weapon/armor skins, titles, objective decorations, leaderboards)
  • Remove map wide lagging during large fights
  • Base professions buffed to be just as powerful as specializations
  • WvW masteries made baseline for all players (I don’t want to see anyone told off siege because they don’t have enough mastery levels yet)
  • All best-in-slot gear/consumables made easily available for all players in WvW; no time gating; no grinding; no PvE dependency!
  • Players boosted to full level 80 with all skills unlocked when entering WvW
  • Guild War Chest items available by materials gained from WvW only; no PvE dependency!
  • Guild War Room upgrades available by time gating and materials gained from WvW only; no PvE dependency!
  • Quality-of-life items
    • Scoring user interface revamp; especially the leaderboard is missing in-game
    • Loot management (players ultimately turn 99% of all loot into gold and the process doing so is very laborsome)
    • How siege is operated
      • Remove camera spin when using siege
      • Get rid of siege refreshing (it’s seriously not fun)
      • Mortar #5
      • Trebuchet/catapult/mortar #1 and #3 turn channeling
      • Trebuchet/mortar long distance camera; add ability to see target’s health
      • Trebuchet Mastery #5 into combat log and to floating combat text
      • Arrow cart line of sight anomalies; communicate the reachable target areas when player is placing the siege
    • Stop mini-map zoom-pan-locking inside keep lord rooms
    • How supplies are consumed in even numbers only (tick 10, tick 4, tick 1… that’s just wrong)
    • Stop build channeling immediately when a siege is built or a wall/gate is fully repaired
    • Infusions (get rid of duplicate stat items; make WvW rings have 3 infusion slots by default; change WvW amulets to have an infusion slot instead of that other type of slot)
    • Combat log time stamp precision to seconds and tenths
    • After death instant replay video and damage statistics
    • Automatic equipped items switching upon entering WvW, like we have traits/skills switched now
    • Build saver (quick switching between equipped items/traits/slotted skills)
    • Change guard/worker NPCs not to respond to F-key
    • Make towers/keeps/castle contested only when a wall or a gate is damaged or when the lord is in combat or dead
    • Remove the roaming skritt/centaur NPCs on Alpine borderlands
  • Bug fixes
    • Reward Tracks random track activation upon completing a repeatable track
    • Teleport skills failing or succeeding without any logic depending on the location on the map and sometimes on the upgrade level of objective
    • Siege placement deny/allow indicators inaccurate
    • Presence of the Keep
    • Returning dolyak displacement
    • Release workaround fixes for bugs that have existed for over a year
      • Have those bugs added to the Known Issue Tracker
        • Make the tracker link work (bug tracking tool is bugged. lol)

I do not want the old manual objective upgrading system back. I prefer this automatic one.

ANet already has an unreleased/unfinished feature for server population rebalancing. No details revealed. The feature was shelved while the server linking is in testing. There’s another thread discussing about it somewhere on this forum.

Specializations give access to new profession skills (for mesmers is it F5 shatter) and a new weapon (for mesmers a shield) and new skills (for mesmers wells) in addition to the trait line itself. Nerfing the specialization trait lines or those new abilities would be the simplest approach, but players hate nerfing more than power creep. So buff up all other weapons and traits and skills.

New players should have an equal footing in every aspect with more veteran players.

Let the diversity come from different builds and playstyles, not differences in amount of stats a player can access. Insta-gibbing under geared newcomers is boring. The quarterly profession balance patches will keep things in motion to prevent stagnation.

You do cannot learn your profession if you only have access to few skills against opponents with all possible skills. You will just be frustrated that you have no counters to some attacks and that makes you lose every combat.

War Chest contains Tactics and Improvements you can slot to claimed objectives in WvW. (I’m not talking about a chest armor item) The point is that I do not want to spend gold buying Flax Fibers or other materials from PvE players because WvW does not provide those in sufficient quantities. I’m OK if they cost Badges of Honor only.

- Get rid of unnecessary tedious things in WvW, such as the -50% damage on siege and guards/lords.

- For Anet to continue redesigning the desert borderland to optimise the WvW experience.

…but obviously class/skill/combat balance is by far the most pressing issue in WvW. It’s really not right anymore.

I’m going to use the above post as an example to make my point. Korgov has a lot of stuff in his post that I would love to see and a few that I am totally against. Korgov and I probably have different play styles and different priorities for what we would like to see in WvW.

The WvW community as a whole doesn’t even know what it wants. We may say we do but when it finally gets implemented people scream.

What WvW needs is a purpose.

What many of us have wished for from the beginning is that WvW be a serious competitive game-mode(with all the balance related things people have already listed).

Right now playing WvW does not matter, playing WvW skillfully does not matter. Winning the week does not matter. Winning outnumbered fights, or PPTing better than anyone else does not matter.

Now imagine if WvW had the structural framework to give a purpose to doing WvW. Skirmishes were a baby step in that direction, but have lacked any sort of follow up at all.

Make winning matter, make playing well matter. Give people a reason to be in WvW and give them a reason to improve their play.
