What do you do if not in a Zerg?
actually non-mindless zerging is another way to get badges, which obviously wasn’t what you were doing since you had no idea what you were doing. unfortunately it’s not exactly your fault that there are no zergs that have any organization.
Sharks With Lazers [PEW]
I’m not sure how crowded your WvW server is and what kind of numbers you run into either. I know that on the NA servers in the lower tiers you do not have as many people usually and so often find smaller fights. Even the “zergs” are often pretty small and it is, in my opinion, a lot more fun. I have 5-6k Badges sitting in the bank, the rest I use to purchase siege equipment with. I have never stepped foot in the jumping puzzle tbh.
The goal of roaming and small-groups has to be “fun.” As it stands, it’s not monetarily viable to do anything other than zerging, but I prefer fun over funds.
Like others have said, your options probably vary depending on what server you’re on. I’m in a lower tier NA server as well, and I very rarely zerg at all. If I do join one, it’s almost always with friends or guildies, and we’re very organized, so it leads to fun large scale fights.
That said, I spend most of my time either running solo or with groups ranging from 2-6 people. Running around capping camps and taking the occasional tower is fun with these size groups, because if you play well together you can very often take out numbers 2-3+ times your own.
Now, it sounds like you’re only doing it for badges for PvE reason, so these might not apply to you since they’re not the “most efficient” way to farm badges, but if you’re looking to have fun in WvW I highly recommend you find a good group to run with and possibly even join a WvW guild that can show you the ropes.
Sometimes it’s hard to figure out how everything works, but it’s a very fun format once you get into it.
Tarnished Coast [Crit]
Duo/trio roaming with buddies while on Skype/Mumble/etc.
Win or lose, massive amounts of fun are always had.
You are probably doing something wrong, I’m also on SFR and I regularly get half a dozen badges in just one clash against an opposing zerg. We usually melt the oposition so there’s a fairly steady income of badges in the many times we farm enemy zergs
Make sure to get an AoE (area of effect) weapon, charge when the commander charges and tag/attack any enemies you can (it’s pretty easy since they mostly blob), depending on your class be in range and drop AoE or double dodge and get in the middle of the group, oh and don’t forget to use support skills to help your allies
Atm my biggest 1st world vs world problem is that the bags get too scattered and I have to move a lot to pick them up (also, autopick, do it Anet)
There’s plenty else to do anyway, there’s scouting, defending, escorting dolyaks or harassing the enemy’s supply routes, our TS usually has ppl in the main group or doing the other things
(edited by Chiolas.1326)
Wander take back camps and sentry points, repair walls kill people, get zerged under by “elite” groups.
Devona Borders (DB)
Devonas rest.
Mindless zerging is extremely boring. I like fights up to about 30vs30. After thakittens just completely lame. But even then, its extremely hard to get 30vs30s happening because everyone tries to bring more and you end up with 120v120. I mostly run around by myself roaming. I hit sentries, camps, flip mercenaries and if my allies are hitting something I will cut off paths to draw players away from siege and/or contest waypoints. Outside of that, there isn’t much to do.
Hmmm, What class are you playing?
Secondly, what border u play on most? (EB or a BL)
I would deff recommend joining a WvW guild with TS communication and daily events.. You’ll see mostly they will go to a BL and do their raid/event there since (most) servers care for their own BL, hence more ppl (enemies) will be there..
Why I asked for class is when you’re using an AoE-class (like ele’s), u can just throw your AoE’s around and every enemy u hit (and when they die by someone else), you’ll get lootbags = badges.. This counts for every “tick” u gave..
Normally I can earn between 75-150+ badges in 1 evening when I roam alongside a guild who’s doing event with my Ele.. You don’t need to fninsh/kill them to get your badges, you just need to land your aoe’s around so they’ll have debuffs (conditions) and that’s actually enough to earn a badge (or badges)…
Same goes for WxP by the way..
Hope I helped you!
Cheers
Zerging gets me more loot per minute than the way I have been playing recently. However it is much more fun for me to run havoc squads and fight against other havoc squads.
I’ve earned roughly 3000-4000 badges most of that time was in T8 where groups are small by necessity.
Get a group of friends, cap camps and sentries. If you see red (and it isn’t a tidal wave of red), kill ’em.

I have never seen a badge drop from guards, only supervisors and lords, the “bosses”.
When I don’t run in a big group I usually run around soloing camps and sentries (or do the same thing with a small havoc squad), defend things and run supply for repairs/refresh siege, or hit the JP.
One of the best things you can do is find a buddy, 2 should be enough with decent builds and flip camps across all 4 maps…points wise its probably the best thing you can do for your server, if there is not many of you. Obviously you can’t do it during primetime because of queues…
Obviously be clever about it, always get the ones near your spawning point first and constantly jump wp to wp were you think you can have the most effect. Obviously, because they is only a few of you spec for high movement speed, any skills that will let you escape from a zerg…
I like to solo/roam/scout a lot, only jumping into the Zerg as they come to my spot when I yell out something is being attacked. Typically get between 100-150 badges in a couple hours of doing this … Nothing compared to what others get, but steady income. Most of the fun in WvW for me is playing chess … Successfully predicting where the enemy will go next, and then doing a few tricks to thwart their efforts …. Which can easily be achieved solo.
You want badges in Zerg vs Zerg? Don’t focus your attention (or your damage) to just one enemy. Deal damage to as many as possible. Basically treat the zerg itself as a single entity.
What profession and with what weapons do you use?
Also, if you do a lot of running around, sometime you don’t even get the message to press “F” and there is a very short dely between the time an enemy goes down and the bag spawns. You could be leaving bags behind and not even know it.
What class are you playing? Unless you are entering into a fight spamming an AOE skill, you won’t get a lot of loot bags coming your way.
On getting Badges…
As a Warrior I enter a battle with my Long Bow using the AOE skills. I then switch to a Sword to mop up. One large battle can net me 6 badges easily. The key is, open field engagements against a large group on enemies will give you more badges than riding the Karma Train and taking one keep after another that has few defenders. The greater the risk, the greater the rewards.
On getting wiped out….
Joining a PUG group that randomly gathered on a commander can be a gamble. Your best bet is to find out what guilds are serious about WvWvW and join the one that fits your personality. A solid guild that trains for WvWvW and communicates with TS or Mumble can decimate an enemy PUG group twice their size. I’ve personally seen it over and over again.
If you were on my server, I’d hook you up :-)
“Did you see that? Tell me you saw that!”
Zerging is absolutely NOT the only way to get badges. I’ve been playing WvW for about 3 weeks & I’ve accumulated well over 1,000 badges, almost exclusively roaming.
If you got one badge you presence probably didn’t matter. Weird thing is that i play like braindead monkey and still get lot’s of bags. I usually look where enemies are and then push 6, 7, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

I don’t know. Maybe.

We on SFR like to live dangerously, healing is for sissies :P
So after I get my gift of battle (should be any day now), what reason do we have to come back?
Small man fights are what fuel my wvw appetite. 2-10 guys runnin around, takin camps, tryin to sneak some northern BL towers, campin out sw camp trebbin bay to lure ppl in and kill em, scraps at the ruins, ganking yaks and the ppl who defend them, and depending on your match up you can get some interesting fights defending your southern home BL yaks.
Get some friends you pve with into it, find some wvw builds or experiment with your own, have fun with it and your friends, havoc on enemy BL’s is the best for this, find the outmanned buff, make it free!

Have fun trolling ppl as well.
I personally mostly camp southern camp at borderlands. Only ppl who are attentive will rly notice you and only a few would come and attack you. If they are with too many, you run. If it’s only one, you can 1v1 him.
(Also, if you win and he’s downed, you can party him and start a real 1v1 without finishing each other.. if he wins, a big chance he’ll finish you :P )

So after I get my gift of battle (should be any day now), what reason do we have to come back?
It all depends on what you find fun, the reason that i will never have a legendary is that you can not buy them with badges alone.
under a good well know commander, zerging can be great fun, and in a couple of hours you can get over a 100 badges (even with a ranger) a few gold, which goes straight into consumables and siege.
solo is fun, running around yak slapping, sentrys, camps and 1v1’s.
Havoc, my favorite part, jump in with some mates and see how much of a enemy BL you can cap or ninja’ing Bay or hold the north camp for as long as possible.
I cant think of anything outside of WWW to do, i’ve been trying to motivate my self to get 2 monk runes form AC for the last couple of week, but i can not bring my self to leave WWW.
@OP, being in a party helps with bag drops, this is of course on the condition your group can defeat the opposition.
Today I got onto teamspeak and spent around an hour with a commander and his squad. I got one badge. Not only that, it was incredibly boring with him saying “Stack on me…moving out 1,2,3”, then off to some tower to be killed by the opposing zerg. I can’t even pretend that my presence matters. I can safely say that were I not there, nothing would have changed, and no outcome would have been different.
So far, the quickest way for me to get badges has still been the jumping puzzle. This is the second time I’ve gotten onto teamspeak with a zerg and though I got more badges the first time, it was just as boring.
I don’t know the way around this. I mean I know it’s “World vs World”, so there’s gonna be big battles. But…dammit it’s boring as hell. And if you’re in a smaller zerg, you just get eaten up by bigger ones and don’t even have time to collect your loot bags.
I’m on EU server Seafarer’s Rest.
Maybe I can solo supply camps. I’ve done that too. But I hardly get any badge drops from veterans. And I can’t solo a tower or a keep. And there’s no guarantee that the lord will drop a badge either. It’s just too slow.
So is mindless zerging the only way people get their badges? With jumping puzzles I’ve accumulated around 450 badges for my gift of battle. I’d have liked to earn them some other way. I want to like WvW but no matter how many times I’ve tried, there’s just nothing for me to do.
So after I get my gift of battle (should be any day now), what reason do we have to come back?
When I wanna farm badges I just go roaming, but I don’t know what your 1vX skill level is so it might not be a viable option I suppose

Used to play thief hide up in the keep before its taken and CnD on walls while chewing on RL food or sipping beers. Gets interesting if not found. I can teamchat so if there were mesmer dead inside they won’t release. Even if I get found, it takes at least 10 to get me, draw their forces from where they should have been. And most of the time I escape unharmed out of boredom.
that’s when I refused to play any classes other than thief.

Try zerg diving. Its fun, you get lots of loot bags and you help your team by distracting the enemy. Be prepared to die a lot.
Yarr! I be keeping me pirate runes, Matey. Yarr! You’re welcome. Yarr!
