No matter my defense, 1 second and i have my hp to 30%- Heartseeker, Heartseeker, Heartseeker im dead. 9k hp is 50% of my bar, if i barely have a second to react and fight back, stealth stealth stealth. backstab Heartseeker Heartseeker Heartseeker.

Im done from now on im just gonna log off everytime i face a thief, no worthy my /&%/&%$ time.-

You forget. Thieves have the best CC in the game. It’s an aoe passive ability that all thieves have where all enemies within 1500 range are only allowed to sit there. They can’t move, they can’t cast abilities they just have to sit there and get farmed.

-and the battle start over just that i dont have more force life. and all my marks are in CD. Lest remember thief have no cooldown, and the initiative just regenerate as fast as a korean buy a MMORPG whit naked womens.

Why are you not running a stun break? Not even Basilisk can stand up to it. Why do you not have something you’re good with on swap? Necros are strong against thieves.

Why are you complaining ? That’s 4 hits. In wow i used to 2shot my opponents as a rogue (mutilate). And you only have 18k life, if you had 30k it’d be much harder to kill you. Also, if you’re not running any stunbreaker, you can’t really complain. You have the tools, if you’re not using them it’s your own fault.

Once it gets to range the fight is tricky because the health point pool on a necro is fantastic. By the time I whittle one down, usually someone else has joined the fight one way or another.

I’ve been main-ing an Eng for WvW for a while now… unless I’ve been needed to slap yaks I’ve avoided my thief.

Just because some one defends something doesn’t mean they are trying to gain favor for their own class.

4sec and a half isn’t spammable but still pretty good, don’t you think ? And just because you have no idea how to spec / trait and gear up doesn’t mean that thieves are overpowered…

This part isn’t directed at the OP, but I think Thieves are fine the way they are and that Anet keeps them that way to see how many people will QQ over a class that is fine, but frustrating in the hands of a very good player.

I run over 20k of health, and im ok with thieves even when they appear from nowhere its their role and i run a thief myselfif i can kill or not deppens how duck can the thief be killing with mace or wand and a medium/low atack isnt easy when the stats that matter are the damage ones.

They are pretty weak in PvE and average in sPvP that everything is balanced around, so they are planning to buff the thief considerably in future patches…

Anet have said WvW is not mean’t to be a balanced in any way, so doesn’t count…

5k too much burst damage? Yep, sure
Too many CC? You should take a better look on this, just compare with other classes.
L2p issue here.
Thieves are weak in pve, averaged in pvp and almost last option in zerging MvM.
In fact what thief needs is some love/buff in p/p builds and an increase in support for teams in the trickery line.

Ive been running thief a bit lately. I have to say Im really feeling forced into playing the flavour of the month glass cannon DP build. Outside of this build it feels really sub standard to all of my other classes. Hopefully we will see some buffs to some other stuff so I can do something other than BS another glasscannon, blind them, heartseeker into stealth and BS them again. Im a bit concerned they nerfed the range on SB though. It feels like a needed weaponset in medium-large scale battles.

DD + SB is pretty nice too 0/30/30/10/0… valk armor div runes zerk rest. Hits like a truck (3k attack, 112% CD without food/lust stacks) and is surprisingly survivable (2.45k armor, 16.7k hp). It does take more skill than DP… but it really pays off. DP loses quite a bit of damage without C&D.

Indeed… the SB used to be what thieves would use in med sized battles… but that cluster bomb nerf killed it

I agree with the above poster. My main is engineer, but I have a level 80 thief (besides many other level 80s. And no I didn’t craft level my chars).

Thief works very well as solo and also in groups in pve. It is probably the easiest profession to get 100% world map completion doing just solo play. Good thieves are welcome in dungeons and bad thieves, well… bad thieves are bad.

The dps between different professions using exactly same gear (armor, trinkets, consumables) is surprisingly similar. Thus thief burst isn’t any better or worse than e.g. warrior using eviscerate (axe burst stkill). In fact a warrior using exactly same gear would do pretty much the same damage with eviscerate as backstab. The difference is that warrior won’t immediately teleport next to you and cannot turn himself invisible or teleport away if the ganking didn’t work. Thus you see much less QQ about warriors using eviscerate.

The biggest problem of a thief in WvWvW is the ability to access stealth at demand. The frequent access to shadowstepping is another big problem. And as side result this allows thieves to run very fragile high damage burst builds with little risk of constantly dying. With the exception of mesmer and necromancer, most other professions wouldn’t consider zerker gear so viable. For example most warriors I know use PVT gear (mixed with some valkyrie / knight) in WvWvW.

If you trait your thief well, you can get perma stealth, which is the perfect tool to rest and wait for the right moment to strike or hide inside enemy keep. I am now talking about the D/P + shortbow build, which has taken traits for faster initiative regeneration.

But even in combat you can stay stealthed about half of the time, which makes fighting against thieves very frustrating even in those cases when you know how the skills and mechanisms work. The 3 second revealed is way too short in WvWvW. The revealed is 4 seconds in pvp for a good reason, but stealth is more powerful in WvWvW.

What i Think is: NO MMORPG should allow a class to have such powerful mechanic to use as free will, Stealth in this game give thief a Clear advantage over other class, Tanker, dps, glass canon or whatever the class.

Stealth:
A. Enter a battle (1st strike, one of the most powerful and important aspect in a combat and more when the 1st strike is a Burst damage that take 30-40% of you HP, the 1st reaction you will make is to use you healing skill “30-40 sec DC”.

B. Control the flow of the battle on who start and who end, when im facing a thief i loose my target also my L.O.S what is clear a disadvantage over my adversarie since he never loose me as target. Loose target make you:
-waste you dodge (2)
-spam you AOE trying to hit one L.O.S target (wasting you attacks)

C. Out of the battle (aka RUN like a kitten Chicken) at will, Thief normally start the fight and implement the step: (A-B) and when something is getting ugly just “POOF” disappear when no other class have the access. When you fight against any other class and they retreating you never loose they Target, they can outrun you or (disappear for 2-5 sec max “Mesmer”) but whit thief they just “POOF”.

In some Other aspect: the mechanic of this game make me to have various set of gear for different contest:
1.Other classes: From my gameplay view point.
-My Mesmer: PVe: zerker, WvW: PVT and Rabid including gear, weapon and trinkets. (X3)
-My Elementalist: PVe: zerker, WvW: PVT including gear, weapon and trinkets. (X2)
-My Guardian: PVe: zerker, Knight , WvW: PVT including gear, weapon and trinkets (X3)
-My Necromancer: PVe: zerker, WvW: PVT and Rabid including gear, weapon and trinkets (X3)
-My Ranger: PVe: zerker, WvW: Apothecary and Rabid including gear, weapon and trinkets (X3)
-My thief is just level 55 so i just use any crap i get from missions and TP.

Trust me, we want to play other builds than the zerker backstab thief. Anet just makes it kitten hard for us to do anything else than that build… In every single patch they have slowly ripped our other builds to pieces, but not really done any changes to the one build people complain about. I would live to run a P/P and S/P thief, but it’s really hard and there are far superior builds I could chose instead.

I would love for them to revert their changes to S/D and make it more viable again (it was fine, why did they touch it?!). I would love to get some damage back to pistol whip (auto attack is better and it doesn’t root you). P/P just need more mobility built into the weapon set.

A thief even in the hands of a bad player can 1v1 most classes and if he cant he runs away getting range on a thief is hard as they spam heartseeker to close or run in the opposite direction. There deffo is a big diff between a good thief and a bad one, But a bad one can still kill pretty easy. I have a thief and iam not that good on him but i can still kill most classes easier than any other class i play.

Uhh.. that isn’t full glass.. I run full glass, and I take 9-10K per hit from a thief. It’s the risk I run though, so I don’t mind.

In this picture im running my Full Apothecary gear ranger whit some nasty Hp reg. Due the burst damage (13,406 damage in less than 2sec) should i just laugh and think this is the way the game mean to be?

Where is the balance in the last pic fight? i should hit him for 10k too to compensate the surprise attack, or i should heal myself for more than 10k to compensate the damage received. But no as we can see my 1st reaction was;
Troll Unguent: Health per second: 856 (0.12), Duration: 10 s, No fight last 10sec in this kind of situation.

Lots of necros wvw in zerk gear. Lots of mesmers do too. There is a Warrior in my guild that runs full zerk in wvw and stays alive like a boss. Thieves are not the only class that can effectively run zerkers in wvw. We are the class that tries it most often. That said many many many thieves actually run Cavalier/Valkyrie mixes not straight zerker.

The other day a warrior caught me with a shield bash and followed up with eviscerate…for 15k damage (that’s 107% of my total hp btw).

Another time I was walking past a tower and did not see a warrior sitting on the wall. Next thing I know, dead. Killshot – 22k damage.

No thief has ever come close to those damage numbers on me. Those are just two examples I can think of off the top of my head where another class did obscene damage.

All classes can do damage if they spec damage.

I mained a thief for 6 months in a pure WvW guild, it was fun. You have to change the style of play but a thief with Dagger storm and Cluster bomb spam is amazing. AoE cripple and never ending supply of blast finishers. Granted, the split-second you get focus fired you are toast which isn’t good and is a free rally to the other team, it is doable you just aren’t nearly as effective as other classes.

Thieves are designed as scouts, to win a 1v1, 1v2 if needed and get away safely. That’s about all they can do.

tldr – stop complaining about thieves or start complaining about other OP aspects of other classes

Obviously you don’t get it. Every thief QQer is a dueling god and anyone who beats them is obviously hacking and their class is obviously OP. It couldn’t possibly be that they made a bad decision that resulted in them being isolated, alone, against a strong duelist class with a competent player running it. It couldn’t be that they got outplayed. Nope. Thief OP! CAN’T SEE WUT DO?

Armor plz… , and that is not much with 3.7k armor, sometimes i still get ~8k backstabs

I call shenanigans.

For a thief to do this much damage against that much armor means the power has to be ridiculously high. The player would need to have stacked a high crit dmg stat above 100 and have a power rating around 5k. The base damage before armor and power get pulled into the mix is around 6k and that presumes a fully zerk thief with a perfect hit. To add an additional 2k to that number the power has to be greater than your armor which may be possible but not without a good deal of external modifiers (bloodlust, 25 stacks of might, vuln, etc). Any thief running this level of extremes is going to be incredibly delicate with virtually no toughness or healing capacity.

I can understand people’s frustration with thieves, but the thing is, without their stealth and burst damage, they’re pretty much nothing. Anet hasn’t given them really anything to balance out builds, pigeonholing them into specific builds.

They kind of remind me of rangers in a way; they’re one dimensional despite having different builds available. They’re really only effective in 1 specific build in WvW and that happens to be an OP build compared to other classes. I take it your talking about WvW Kishter.

I don’t have much of a problem with thieves because I barely run into them anymore. I don’t know if they’re just bored with solo roaming or have decided to join zergs with shortbows (which I’ve seen quite a few do lately). If I run into a thief solo, I already know I’m dead and I accept it. That first hit will deal 9-10K, and once they see how much damage they do, they NEVER let up lol.

I play a Ranger, and I could spec myself into a BM bunker build which would make it next to impossible to for thieves to kill me, but in doing so, I’ve pretty much handicapped myself in WvW in being effective.

I don’t change my play style or builds just to counter thieves, and I would suggest to others to do the same. Kishter, I havn’t bothered taking my necro into WvW yet so I can’t comment on what the most effective build is, but perhaps they are better played as glass cannon “Rampager build”? Perhaps other necros can chime in if they follow that build.

I would agree that thieves need an overhaul in terms of available effective builds with less emphasis on stealth.

Uhh.. that isn’t full glass.. I run full glass, and I take 9-10K per hit from a thief. It’s the risk I run though, so I don’t mind.

In this picture im running my Full Apothecary gear ranger whit some nasty Hp reg. Due the burst damage (13,406 damage in less than 2sec) should i just laugh and think this is the way the game mean to be?

Where is the balance in the last pic fight? i should hit him for 10k too to compensate the surprise attack, or i should heal myself for more than 10k to compensate the damage received. But no as we can see my 1st reaction was;

Dont you think that devs know perfectly how many times the thieves die or kill?
Just because anybody was ganked by a thief it is not necessary to open a thread. It would be like if I start a thread regarding retaliation just because I use p/p.
I know almost all the thieves in a top3 server and the facts are:
- Thief is not in the top 3 regarding duels. This means that many other classes would kill you, but you think that you could have some opportunity against skillful thieves without stealth, no, probably you would not.Do not QQ just because stomped by a stealthed thief.
- Thief is the last option in dungeons and pve. Fine that good thieves are always welcomed, compared to other classes is crap. In GW2 you must be a super-thief in order to have somekind of place in a pve team.
– Thief is the last option in MVM zerg. Count the number of thieves in top guilds, zero or almost zero. Just take a look to RG videos. The top guilds ask their thieves to take thier alts. Since the last nerf to short bow it has been even worse.
Learn to deal against stealth as I learned to deal against retaliation.
Thief does not need even more nerfs to destroy absolutely their place in the game.
Answering your question, Thief needs a more viable p/p build and an increase in team support in the trickery line.

It’s really just mind-boggling at this point. I ran into a ranger the other day roaming and the guy was really good so long as he could see me. I got the jump on him with the opening backstab and immediately got knocked like a mile away. I would gap close with shadow shot and he would dodge and knockback. I evaded most of his damage, but he was real good at playing keep away. Then I stealthed and he just……..stopped. Just freaking stood there. Just called it a day and gave me the backstab. Didn’t start moving again until I reappeared. It was like fighting an NPC that just drops aggro on stealth lol
