I know flipping camp is one.
Reporting enemy activity is one.
Anything else??

What after I flipped some camp and don’t see enemy? Should I join the zerg then?

Also, what should I report and what shouldn’t? Should I report everytime I see enemy zerg?

Currently soloing but I intend to lead my guildies with me when I get familiar with the system.

A lot of questions, but please help this newbie.

Maybe warrior? Or an engineer. I’m pretty sure a lot of people will say “lolteef” but I find that those two are probably on par if not better to thieves when it comes to roaming ability.

And I’ll just say the old adage: everything boils down to player skill at some point or other.

I think the main advantage of the thieves is that they never get killed if they don’t want to get killed and still can kill guarded Dolyaks pretty fast even if players are nearby to protect them. They just move there, do some attack to take away 60-70 percent of the Dolyak’s health. Then 1-2 more hits and it is dead. Then back in stealth and away with their bow infiltrator arrow skill. Not possible to kill or stop them(at least not if you have a lot of players – they just kill the Dolyak and run away if you only have 4 or 5 players nearby).

This is a good think cause the map is big and you don’t want to die often or spend time fighting others.

I roll a necro, definitely not the best roamer class. Yesterday a thief ambushed me but when I almost got to kill him, he stealthed away. Also saw a d/d ele, same thing, couldn’t catch him when some of my allies showed up. >_>

But I won’t change my class :P

Nice approach, I would add
- Distracting enemy squads.
- Denying supplies to the enemy by adding perks to camps.
- Destroy enemy supplies by using supply traps.
- Cut reinforcement routes.
- cap ruins
- Simulate attacks.
- Ninjas when viable.

When reporting provide concise information:

When I roam I do the following things :

- Contest keeps with waypoints
- Take bloodlust / prevent other servers from getting it
- Give reports – Follow the enemy zerg
- Take camps / disrupt dolyaks
- Use supply traps
- Kill invaders
- Take sentrys
- Portect the supply chain from camps to tower/keeps, give some swiftness to those poor dolyaks
- Build sieges inside keeps/towers ( use camp supplys )
- Refres sieges every 1h
- Repair gates/wall left damaged by slackers commanders

I do all this with my ranger and ele, good roamer classes :

- Ranger
- Thief
- Engi
- Ele
- Warrior

All classes are viable roamers, it depends on your level of skill. The three most commonly listed as best for roaming are:
Thief
Engineer
Warrior
The reasons are the following:
Thief: Stealth, high mobility, if used properly very deadly in 1 on 1 combat
Engineer: High mobility, although they take more practice than most classes, extremely deadly in 1 one 1 or even 1 on 2+
Warrior: High mobility, lots of health and overall difficult to kill

The pattern here is mobility. If you’re a roamer you want to be fast so you can escape enemies if they spot you. Your purpose isn’t to kill other players, it’s to keep tabs on enemy activity and be a thorn in their side. If you can manage to kill others while you’re at it that’s just a bonus.

Your objectives should be:
Flip Camps
Kill supply caravans (Dolyaks)
Contest areas (which will draw enemy attention)
Report enemy activity
Capture Sentry’s
Refresh Siege if you’re passing through an owned tower/keep/castle
and this one is more suited for a havoc group but can be done by a roamer; claim merc camps

Roamers and Havoc groups are a lot more fun than zerging. Although you probably won’t earn as much experience it feels a lot more rewarding and contributes a lot more to the server than following the blob. Just keep in mind that zerging requires very little skill just attention while Havoc and Roaming needs a good deal of skill.
Skill 1 – 10
Zerg = 4
Havoc = 6
Roamer = 8
Commander = 10

I agree with everything but that statement. Roaming/havoc squad gain more consistent wxp then zerging. Roaming gets you upto 1.5 wxp per hour depending on how many small fights you have in between camps. Zerging averages around 1 wxp per hour because you have to defend/siege upgraded keeps, some commanders look for fights, or you many not be the dominate zerg on a map. PvD give the most wxp per hour but that only happens if you have no competition(mostly thursday which is karma train day).

-Open http://mos.millenium.org or WvW overlay, go into map with least camp activity, preferably with outmanned buff
-Fire up some music
-Flip camps
-Kill yaks
-Flip sentries
-Give reports that commanders will carefully ignore / not use
-Engage in 1v1s that become 1v3s then 1v10s

I choose thief for obvious reasons, although if the game didn’t have sigil stacks or guard stacks, or better system for getting out of combat roaming I would probably choose another because it’s so weak against most decent players. As is, there’s just too much incentive not to die so you don’t lose stacks or have to walk all the way across the map again when you’re roaming the top half of a borderland.

Even if it’s ultimately useless for the server score or team effort on the map, roaming is its own little game. When you blob you’re just another dot on the map with very little influence on the outcome of fights. Solo roaming is all you…you often really have to out think opponents if they are trying to stop you.

For instance, I assure you that killing a yak with the upgraded 82 escorts that’s being walked by a guardian is not as simple as hitting a few buttons and win. You really have to have done it hundreds of times to know exactly how to use your skills to get the yak and not take a beating , and still be set to fight the player after the guards de-spawn…maybe even do something clever like knowing what PvE popups the escorts attack and hitting the yak then.

Also, once you get really efficient at this, solo roaming is really good WXP, the best by far besides karma trains. I usually get about a rank an hour, sometimes maybe 3 ranks in 2 hours if things are going really well.

Thief has always intrigued me. Are they still going to be a good choice after the December rebalance? I don’t know the class at all yet, but I’ve heard they are making changes that will reduce the ability to stealth or something, which might make thieves worse for WvW roaming/scouting?

Even if all I can do is scout and maybe beat up on some NPCs, that’s fine with me.

I think most of us who consider ourselves serious roamers couldn’t care less about all the things posted in this thread. A roamer is out there to kill people. If you’re running around doing all the camp flips, sentries, dolyaks, etc., you’re a ppt’er who happens to be solo.

Its essentially camp flipping, scouting and fighting for the buff (if thats your thing).

Roaming has to be something you like doing though because honestly you will spend a lot of your time avoiding larger groups or flat out running from them. You can be the best roamer in the world but when the zerg or a guild appears you need to scoot on out of there, so if thats from your thing you probably wont enjoy it.

Class wise any can work.. necro has some mobility issues which can make it hard to escape if you do get caught out of position.. thief and warrior obviously have the best escaping so can be a little bit more reckless.. but as long as you’re comfortable you can 1v1 or 2v1 on your class/build you should be in good shape.

I agree with what some people have said about it being for the sheer pleasure of the challenge, but keep in mind that WvW is a team effort. If you want to be there to test your skills you’re welcome to do so but have the courtesy to do something other than killing a few players. It does help out but not even half as much as flipping something as minor as a sentry will. Unless you have Borderlands Bloodlust and are doing a bunch of finishers it really isn’t helping the team any.
Not complaining, just saying that if you’re going to roam for the challenge don’t consider your efforts anything other than personal enjoyment.
