Let’s have a look at Raid vs WvW rewards…
Raid…
Future Legendary armor. Legendary armor for defeating scripted AI mind you.
Plethora of Ascended gear and more on the way.
Ghostly Infusion aura.
8 minis.

On Rewards
Other than that, we’re making improvements to show ascended gear is awarded. You’ll have a lot more choice instead of getting something you can’t use.
On Rewards
…Any plans on adding all the ascended trinkets to the vendor? Right now those are the only rings/amulets with stats like assassin, viper, etc
Yes, I’ve got a number of improvements/fixes for Spirit Vale that will be coming out with the next raid wing, and this is one of them. You’ll also be able to infuse the rings and backpack, and extra raid miniatures will no longer clutter up your bags.
WvW…
So what is the special WvW currency and their rewards?
Unobtainable tournament claim tickets.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/WvW_Tournament_Claim_Ticket
Unpurchasable rewards that are recycled except for the Mistforged weapon skins.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Battle_Historian
Mistforged weapon skins were introduced in spring of 2014 btw.

So Raid rewards are vastly superior to anything offered in wvw or spvp for going on 4 years. Nice to see that Raids received superior rewards initially, and 5 months later are getting improved.
So what’s going on with WvW rewards?
(edited by Swagger.1459)
So I have played mostly wvw with my time since launch. Probably 80% of my 3.5k hours has gone into the game type. I have been a part of wvw guilds since forever and loved our raid nights. I have played long hours like many of you. I almost have my unstoppable force title!
With the state wvw is in T1 is still filled with action during portions of the day, but there is free time in between for me to give pve a good try. Now I have done some pve before like map completion, dungeons(for legendaries) , living and personal story, and HOT, but I haven’t really put much time into farming maps/dungeons for gold or fractals for that matter.
Over the past 4 days I have farmed the world bosses and followed event trains in verdant brink and cursed shore. I have made around 250g. I have been going in long play sessions. If I tried to get 250g in wvw in 4 days well it simply wouldn’t happen.
I know this dead horse has been beaten through the Earth to my guild mates in Australia, but there is no way I would make more than 70-80g over 4 days in wvw with these same hours i’m putting in.
Now I get wanting players to explore other parts of the game over just staying in one…. but there are some players that would rather earn equal amounts in the game type they enjoy. I know many people that would rather be in a large scale pvp setting to earn their gear/guild perks to use in a large scale pvp setting.
Personally i’m going for the super pistol pewpew. Just wanted to say something while I have the chance before the wvw changes. Have a great day everyone.

ANET is dying. They aren’t the same company that use to honor the player, now they are all about selling outfits, wings and other useless junk for gems.
WvW will never be good again because ANET has lost their soul. You can thank Mike O’Brien for that.
One idea I had was if there was a keep taken while being heavily defended increase the reward or the opposite! The longer you hold a keep while under constant attack the rewards for defending go up. That would be seriously satisfying.
I think if WvW gives better rewards it would be filled of leechers and useless player filling slots that could be used by people who really enjoy the massive pvp.
I think if WvW gives better rewards it would be filled of leechers and useless player filling slots that could be used by people who really enjoy the massive pvp.
I think this is an extremely valid concern. Some players would only be there for rewards or worse could manipulate matches in order to gain maximum rewards while simultaneously causing the server to tank.
It would take careful consideration and planning/implementation of features to prevent this. It would be difficult.
I only fight in wvw for the glory. Plus my spike animation is pretty.
I think if WvW gives better rewards it would be filled of leechers and useless player filling slots that could be used by people who really enjoy the massive pvp.
That already happens, even with the garbage rewards. The 2 dozen people that seem to be always there that would jeopardize the safety of the entire zerg just to tag a lord to ensure a champ bag are a good example.
You have to take the good in with the bad. PvE and PvP have plenty of useless leechers, but in the end it ensures there’s at least a population around. You can’t just assume people that are going after better rewards are going to be useless. For all you know, it might encourage them to play harder. I mean really, it’s 2 chests full of greens and some silver that separate so called winning or losing in this game mode.
In the end the reward tracks of PvP and the map rewards system of PvE are doing a part in keeping the game mode alive. It’s a snowball effect— empty maps are going to turn away a lot of people. And not to be insulting to anyone, but some people are just results oriented and cannot see very far ahead of them— they need to be led. But you can still find a role for these people even if you disagree with where their priorities are.
Furthermore, PvE will always be a more consistent source of rewards and anyone that’s actually a carrot chaser would know that by now.
In the end, the population for WvW is shrinking as it gets increasingly isolated. I don’t think shunning people for what they may do is a prudent approach.

I get this. I did the same for a long time. Up until the release of HOT I was really okay with not earning a lot because I was having so much fun. With HOT and the release of guild halls my opinion has changed.
If you are a competitive wvw guild you need those wvw war room upgrades without a question. You will need thousands and thousands and thousands of gold to get to that point and that is just fact.
In my wvw guild in which I co lead we had just over 30 players who used to log in every day or if not every other day. They had to be consistent players. I think leaving wvw to get the gold for these upgrades killed us.
Now we have 4 or 5 people on per night and my co leader is no longer playing. I also took a long break a month after launch of HOTS. We did have fun playing the other game modes but I think wvw was the glue holding us together. My friends just aren’t playing anymore and it is upsetting. But by far the most important things about wvw are those spike finishers mate. I know they are pretty!
I feel like it’s not even a matter of the shinies or more fake money, but rather a recognition that World vs World is actually a part of the game and thus fits into the game’s systems in a consistent fashion. In other words, it’s not a mini-game, though I should take that back since some probably pay better. :p And PvP requires practically zero upkeep yet…. oh esports.
(edited by ArchonWing.9480)
Rewards were already improved, before HoT pure WvW players who spend money on siege and food struggled to have gold, i had to do pve just to craft ascended gear, now siege is easier to purchase, upgrading territories are free… playing WvW is cheaper than before. I think this is the way it should be make WvW less expensive to play just like sPvP. For example it would be great if we could get ascended armor.
I also think that the highest rewards should be given to people who play all game modes not only chinofarming tons of gold in pve.

This makes total sense. A less expensive wvw is a better one. It is less pay gold to win. That isn’t fun in a pvp environment. WVW with switchable amulets/runes/ sigils like pvp but with more broad wvw catering is the ideal scenario that will never happen. It can’t happen because sadly I’m starting to think WvWers are the whales of GW2. Our income is so much lower so we shell out for gems to convert. I realize this is a bit of a call out and could be obvious/debatable by many others. Its controversial. It depends on the person. I am okay with spending money for gems/gold but that is a whole different topic and a bit of a tangent.
I do like playing multiple gametypes in GW2. SPVP can be a lot of fun and it is fun to get good at playing it. I know the majority of my friends just prefer the larger scale combat. For earning the highest rewards in the game I would be more than happy to play all three types just as you said absolutely.

Honestly, i have to believe in Anet, the foundation of this game is just too immense to suddenly lose faith in them. The question is do they believe in me.
I do believe they followed bad advice, and although i may sound harsh sometimes on the forum, i do care about their work and efforts to entertain us.
I believe in you anet, you made a great game.
The rules are very debateable, and so is the metrics approach. we are alive, living, and here to talk to you and help you, don’t be that person that texts other people while walking with us and ignoring us! lol :p
Let’s work this out, mano a mano and make this game legendary.

Thanks for linking it Lord. I read the whole thing. I like the ideas of rewarding players for creating the content like commanders and people that plan out things to do. I think this could be utilized even more than it is now through the wvw guild missions.
I also like the other ideas in the thread on bringing rewards to achievements and a sPvP like track reward system.
Also I see you had people saying they are concerned about higher rewards bringing uncaring players. As I said before in my own thread ANET would have to be extremely careful when implementing higher rewards to not encourage bad playing or match manipulation.
(edited by TehHobNob.4687)
i agree.
Gw 2 needs to run like a government, the pvers are civilians, and pvprs are military!
church is to pve rules as state is to pvp rules ….it needs separation.
Military grade items do not belong in civilian areas.
the pvers can keep the pvp jumping puzzle – it’s good for training cadets :p
imo, the best item any pvpr / wvwr can have is a necklace made of ears of all the people he took out in battle.
I’d rather walk through town with a necklace that has 500 names on it than a legendary,
that would mean more to me than something shiny i can buy from the market lol

I’ve said this in the past and I still feel the same; the reward items from the rank up chests should be removed completely.
First, I would love better rewards in WvW as would many others. However as a few have mentioned, it could very potentially become an issue with leechers/farmers entering WvW just to gain rewards. So a low income would still be necessary in an effort to avoid having WvW become a place where farmers feel inclined to go.
Second, a lot of people, myself included, also don’t much care about rewards at all. We play simply because we enjoy WvW not because we’re interested in good loot/gold. Still, we should be able to earn a profit while doing WvW considering it is an expensive hobby to maintain. Siege, although you can now purchase it with Proof Of Heroics, is very expensive. Consumables and other items as well which all are so expensive you simply cannot maintain it with the income from WvW alone.
And lastly, back to my first point, I don’t think rank up chests should have rewards at all. You should be notified that you’ve ranked up and that should be that. OR they should only be a chest when item(s) of value at Rare or greater quality are within.
As it currently is, it’s insulting to always get such crappy loot. Don’t get me wrong, not trying to sound entitled or something. But it’s much in the same way you might reward a kid for a job well done, even if that job doesn’t require any real effort (ranking up isn’t exactly an achievement). Take rewarding a kid for doing a 5minute walk for example. Except instead of something they’d enjoy like icecream or a few dollars, you give them a dinner plate and a shoelace. Sure it’s something… But they’re just going to be upset because the items aren’t of any real value and they were told (being told in this case is the dancing rank up chest) they’d get a treat. It’s better to get nothing because what we get is just a disappointment.
So IMO, either rank ups have their rewards removed all together or they only reward items when they’re at a Rare or greater quality. As is, it’s just a downer/extra chore to open them.
(edited by SpellOfIniquity.1780)
what can I say, wvw is often as rewarding as eating gravel.
it’s obviously so people can’t afford server transfers so more gems are bought.
All the developers left anet last year, they are left only with graphic designers. They are not serious anymore.
The problem with WvW (not counting karma trains on EotM) is that its reward system is by far the worst in all aspects of the game: coin, items, materials, shiny, recurring events, “track progression” and achievement points.
coin – rank up chests give you very little and are not as frequent as of course PvE ones, but even PvP coin rewards are better.
items – the chance to get an exotic drop from an NPC (very few of them on the map, mostly veteran status) or a killed player (which excludes, roamers, scouts etc) is far smaller then in PvE and PvP (that’s where I get most of my ascended loot boxes and rings from)
materials – the nodes are a first step, but can’t even cover a fraction of what you need to Scribe tactics and improvements. Leaving charcaters at farming locations in PvE to get materials has no alternative in WvW.
shiny – we have one set of armour that gets paid with Badges and two weapon sets that get bought with Tournament tickets (which most of us have not gotten in huge numbers – perhaps for two or three weapons?)
recurring events – not counting that dumb Golem Week, the last seasonal tournament was in 2014? PvP has leagues now, PvE has Living Story…
“Track progression” – There is no reward track you can work on doing your daily fights in WvW, unlike the PvP tracks (which reward you with something small like every second or third battle!)
achievement points – Although they have shortened some AP tracks, they are still no fun to go after. Compare those to AP tracks in PvE, where you can dedicate a gaming session of a few days on and get it done. My next WvW track requires me to run next to dollys for around 180 more times…
At the end of the reward tracks, we don’t even get a nice meta item.
Rewards are awful across the board. Sadly, I don’t expect it to get better, even wit the ominous WvW rework that Anet is working on.
LMFAO! You only just realised this?!
Even when WvW was active, when my guild was doing 8 hours raids every single night!
I was lucky to make 2g a night!
OK yes I play a water staff support ele and do little damage, but still.
Anet claim things about balance, but it’s just an excuse.
I heal my group, keep them alive to beat the enemy groups, and they get most of the loot. Forget that without my heals half the group would have been dead last week, and the rest steamrolled over.
But yes, if you want gold, WvW is not the place to be!
Half an hour in PvE will make you enough gold as you would make in a week in WvW!!!!
Balance FTW right.
I never realized WvW rewards were so bad either. I mean, look at PvP rewards for comparison: sub 10 minute matches reward average of flat 22.5 silver and you get all kinds of sellable loot from reward tracks. In addition to this there’s the usual PvP rank rewards.
You’d have to have consistent EB-style fights in WvW to get even close to what other game modes have. Solo roaming and small group capturing doesn’t come close.
Pfff rewards. Let me recruit mercs to carry siege and help me capture points during low activity.
Also would be nice if servers could invest gold and defense time for AI “day” coverage by mercs. Add some strategic elements. Let the rich PvE people contribute to WvW so they get some sort of WvW magic find bonus.
All the developers left anet last year, they are left only with graphic designers. They are not serious anymore.
Yep, I can agree with that. So, where do MMO’s post help wanted adds anyways? Would love to see what kind of openings there are at Anet. Guess I could have a look at their site.
Anet seems to believe that pve’ers play for shinies, pvp’ers play for ego, and wvw’ers play for enjoyment, and rewards players accordingly. Why reward someone when the gamemode is the reward?
That being said, they could at least pretend to reward us once in a while. I’ve heard lots of suggestions, like creating spvp-like reward tracks or skins that can only be earned with wvw badges, but so far, nothing. It never get mentioned anymore, but I’m mostly annoyed that anet reduced the ranks necessary for full wvw mastery from 1400 to 950, but gives pathetic rewards for every new rank attained. Past 950, wvw ranks just stack up and can’t be used for anything. Every 10% of the reward track in spvp, which can easily be achieved with 1-2 matches, gives champ chests and decent mats, but an entire wvw ranks gives 2 greens and some ascended mats that are promptly destroyed.
hrmm, hows this? a wvw only mini based on rank. ^.^
if you see someone in wvw or lions arch with a 5 star general’s mini, you want to be in their guild if you are into wvw or pvp.
and if you want everyone to drool over it, just make it taller than players lol
I think if WvW gives better rewards it would be filled of leechers and useless player filling slots that could be used by people who really enjoy the massive pvp.
This was always how I saw it too. Poor reward always appeared to be a good protections from farmers and ppl not really into the game mode. Still I got Dawn into that game mode out of a player corpse so I can’t really complain…
wvw cant give good rewards , because wvw is made by players and no npcs , given that Anet has no control over rewards

Was Mike part of ANet with GW1? I never played it, but have heard good things about it. If so perhaps it’s the publisher that’s the issue. Who knows, but it’s not the game now that it was 2 years ago that’s for sure.

If it’s kept in the design it’s currently in or if it’s changed to an EotM style design, then yeah I can see this happening somewhat. That being said, having a better WvW reward structure isn’t a bad thing – if it’s done right. Rewards can encourage people to step out of their comfort zone and try new modes, they can tempt people into putting in that extra bit of time and effort, and they can help to offset some expenses. Also to be frank, I would rather fight leechers and useless players than sit in empty maps desperately whispering friends on other servers to try and convince anyone to rally up to fight against.

Mike “led the design and content teams” in GW1. But even still, you can’t really compare like that. GW1’s team had vastly different people than GW2’s, not to mention the games themselves are two different beasts altogether. Also, given that reward issues with WvW have been an issue for a long time and that ANet has actually displayed certain degrees of free rein, I don’t think I’d throw all the blame on NCSOFT.

Mike O’Brien is 1 of the 3 founders of the company and the only founder left.

Anet can improve WvW rank chests.
For example, players receive at least 1 ascended Armor and 1 ascended weapon chest for every Legendary rank. When one reaches Gold Legendary, one would receive at least 3 ascended armor and 3 ascended weapons chests.
but that would amount to grinding for stats, imo good pvp starts with evenly matched players , and it’s the players skill and strategies that compete and win, not their gear.
i’d rather we get all our gear with blank stats that we set for wvw, and the chests have skins or something, and if anything, rewards should reflect your achievements in wvw so it means something in non wvw areas. like if i kill 1k players, my character gets a tear tatoo lol
i really would rather spend more time testing builds and strategies, than grinding for best stats. If anything grinding for stats, makes testing a variety of builds a burden, in storage cost and grind. it would also be a nice plus to win pve stuff for our pve characters, i’m not against that …but not ‘winning’ stats for pvp. thats something that gw1 had and was great, that gw2 shouldn’t have dumped. the gw1 pvp armor system was awesome.

So rather than receiving improved rewards, we’d get no reward at all? Did I read that right? So then we’d HAVE to PvE for cash? One question- are you insane? Don’t give them any bad ideas to drive away those of us who haven’t left the game mode. If it weren’t for the rank up chests (in which I’ve received ascended rings, armor chests and weapon chests), we’d get almost no loot at all.
The key is to implement a HoT map style reward system based on participation so players cannot leech rewards. I’d also prefer that every time you reach the next rank (bronze, silver, mithril, etc.) you receive an ascended item, whether it be armor or weapon. Or perhaps a unique armor skin, like the AP rewards, to show your WvW rank progression. But in absolutely no way should any of our existing rewards be removed in any fashion. WvW should not be a gold sink for any cash we farm to support our WvW habit.
(edited by Sinbold.8723)
They take into account that WvW awards can be cheated by collusion of enemy servers, so they don’t want to give out anything too valuable lest people forgo the actual game mode to get it.
Personally, I think they are way too cautious about it, especially since WvW rewards are currently far inferior even if people do cheat for them. They got a little better with HoT since upgrade costs were removed but that’s just gold, and a small amount of it.
PvP rewards get colluded every single day with daily rooms, to a FAR greater extent than WvW rewards ever were/will be.
^ This is true – and PvP “daily” rooms are something Anet are aware of. You can get rewards quite easily this way. It’s sort of a PvP version of EotM but easier.
It is however no excuse for holding back WvW.
I don’t know how WvW rewards are going to compare to Raid rewards… as a thief I haven’t been allowed to Raid.

Im not thinking cautious, I thinking they just didn’t care to put enough thought and effort into creating a decent reward structure. The devs could have easily implemented an ascended earning system long ago. Plus they know how excruciatingly slow the pace of rewards are in wvw. Also, their mentality was to have everybody pve so they didn’t have to waste time doing anything for wvw.
It’s very telling how Raids are given an ascended reward structure because they want to “challenge players” with harder scripted content, but who cares about ascended gear in a highly competitive and unscripted side of the game…
Build savers are on the radar because of raids. I guarantee that we will get dps and heal meters because of raids too. Also, roles and class designs are being looked at now because of scripted raids, not because of wanting to give players better roles and build variety for the unscripted, and more difficult side of the game. Look at how poor the Druid healing role is… I’ve not seen one healing Druid in wvw, not one, but they were sold as being able to support zergs in wvw… Yes, let’s give a gated and reticle aiming heal role on a slow moving form while zergs are running all over. And the devs wonder why every Druid is a self sustaining build instead, except for raids where bosses and players are more stationary.
Given all this, the least the devs could do at this point is take WvW rewards more seriously. I’m sure it’s not difficult.
(edited by Swagger.1459)
You can get a Legendary back piece through sPvP rewards. Remember that sPvP is the one area of GW2 where the armour stats don’t actually affect your build; so it’s as useful as a chocolate teapot to the people who earned it.
I hope we’ll get something in WvW we can actually use!
there have been numerous debate over rewards
some wvwers say rewards shouldn’t be considered in wvw context becoz is wvw
some wvwers say wvw should have better rewards to attract people or to balance the earning against other modes
i think there more people supporting the idea of having better rewards since good rewards naturally breed more participants and keep your wallet healthy
I hate PvE, and love WvW. Its just a shame that the rewards are so bad they are. If i compare my gold to my friends that play PvE less time than I do wvw – well guess who have 100’s of more gold then the other.
Would be nice if they would recognise WvW Rank with a badge like they do with PvP rank, even if this was only active in WvW. I spent a hell of a lot more blood sweat and tears on my WvW rank than any PvP rank.
PvP style reward tracks need to happen.
I know this dead horse has been beaten through the Earth to my guild mates in Australia, but there is no way I would make more than 70-80g over 4 days in wvw with these same hours i’m putting in.
The fact that you were even making gold in WvW is amazing enough, prior to HoT I was losing gold playing WvW at a rate of at least 1 gold per hour. Now at least I can sell the mats I gather for a little bit of gold.
An hour of node farming in PvE will net you from 3x up to 5x the amount of gold and mats earned in WvW in the same amount of time. There’s just no comparison.
Granted WvW is also a lot more fun than node farming….
You seemed to be mistaken PvE with farming.
PvE isn’t rewarding. Farming is. And farming is always mind blowing boring.
Just see how everyone stops doing dungeon after the rewards is nerf you know those people aren’t doing PvE but they are farming.

I think all parts of the game should reward equally (i.e. time*difficulty = reward). When Anet forces me to do something I don’t like for some gold I log off.
Since I’ve started with this game, wvw have always burnt a gap in my wallet. Food, stones, new armour and weapon sets. Earning enough ingame gold was most of the times not possible, because I’ve donated many of my blueprints to several guilds instead of selling them in the trading post. After changing the guild system I cannot even produce guild sieges anymore with my personal guild. Sure they make some points cheaper, but selling blueprints was the easiest way to earn enough gold.
How much gold you earn in pve depends what you are doing there. VB/AB/DS give a lot of stuff, which you can salvage and sell, by just doing events and grabbing everything you see. In two hours I earn at least 3-5g or could earn even more if I want, you get enough of the T5/T6 crafting mats aswell. Because of this I earned 36g with my crafting from 475 to 500 , because I had all the mats for berserker gear, which I sold after creating. With only wvw it wouldn’t be possible, not even close.
Why I’m writing this? The rewards has to be really better to bring the people in to wvw with all the risk of dying you have there. And of course you will have leechers (remember the Karmatrains) again. Basically wvw is only fun if you have enough and skilled people around you, the numbers depends on your personal gamestyle. Losing because of untrained or lack of players, doesn’t make fun. Maybe anet could add a system where players get a reward when they are fighting enemies aka “[Group]Event: Defeat the invader”. No matter of winning or losing the battle, everyone could get some stuff and gold, if did something for the group(damage or healing). But of course the winner should get better loot (high chance of rare/ lesser chance of exotic loot) and more gold. And these events should be more rewarding that the “taking objects”-event.

I have complain about this issue plenty of times. If the rewards in WvW were better, more players will spend time playing that game mode. ANet needs to make it much easier to make gold from playing WvW. I suggest rewarding the players base on how much territory their server holds. A reward chest should be awarded at 10 minute increments. This way it will encourage each sides to capture and hold more territory. Of course the biggest issue facing WvW isn’t reward but population imbalance. They need to fix that first.
