I’ve started to lose a lot of interest in WvW over the past few months. Changes simply take too long to roll out, balance has never improved, and we’ve been playing the same, tired meta for a very long time now.

I started asking myself: how did I play WvW for as long as I did? While doing WvW for fun’s sake is certainly enough motivation at times, it can’t be the only thing. At some point, the player’s making content for themselves in the form of large scale, repetetive PvP wares thin.

So why aren’t there more rewards for actually doing WvW? Why don’t the badge vendors have a larger selection of skins? Why doesn’t winning a week have a real, noticeable impact on anything? Why are WXP chests filled with nothing of value? why don’t we unlock cool finishers based on our WXP rank like we could do in PvP?

I then started asking myself what other games offered that kept me playing them for so long? What did these other games offer to keep PvP fresh and exciting? And what is GW2 lacking? I honestly don’t know.. but something’s missing.

So does anyone else out there know what the point of WvW is? Obviously we do it for fun? But is that enough? Should it be enough?

Of course. If I’ll ever stop having fun, I’ll just stop playing (either WvW or the whole game).

Rewards are fine and I get some (let’s say most) play to get those, but if that is your main motivation, sooner or later you’re done and after that you’re back to square 1. I remember one of my guildmates saying “If I get a Twilight I’ll stop playing this game”. Totally fair, but a bit depressing to me, after that Legendaries are just a collection of bits… Just for an example.

What’s the point to me going for a run each day? Or go skiing on the weekends in winter/hiking in summer? Because I have fun doing that stuff. Same is GW2 to me.

Imho the real issue is to avoid gameplay to become boring. (And this half depends on the player and half on devs)

I don’t think the dollars is at the heart of the issue because they have poured effort into improving WvW including Culling, Ruins, EotM and tons of balancing. My best guess is they don’t really understand where to take WvW with the existing system and have very few external examples to draw from. This style of game play hasn’t been developed by many game companies so ANet had to cut their own path and now find themselves in somewhat uncharted territory. It is easiest to emulate, it is easier to emulate and improve but remains somewhat difficult to innovate. This is why virtually every MMO is derivative including the venerable WoW which has virtually no innovation but a lot of very well done emulation.

It’s not that unique to be honest. Shadowbane, Lineage 2, and DAoC are each a decade old and have forged ahead in this style of gameplay. That’s why I wonder what kept me so interested in these games and what’s missing in GW2?

I think part of the problem is these games had other things to do. PvE in this game is quite boring to be honest. I’ve long since done everything and the bi-weekly living story update is done in about an hour or 2 on patch day leaving nothing to do. These other games were vast.

They also had very clear rewards for your investment both individually and as a guild/group. They also had severe penalties involved too which rewarded skill and effort moreso than GW2.

The games listed have very static combat. Press number, apply effect. GW2 has positional combat which makes for far more dynamic combat but that system brings its own baggage. Both SB and L2 were straight PvP systems plus arenas with no RvR to speak of. Only DAoC had realm combat and it has its share of warts as well. A lot of the content in GW2 is patterned after DAoC but even the venerable DAoC RvR became stale after a couple years. They eventually implemented a big feature patch for its declining RvR which unfortunately ruined RvR for a lot of players.

I think part of the problem is these games had other things to do. PvE in this game is quite boring to be honest. These other games were vast.

I agree the PvE in GW2 is tired but I feel that way about every MMO these days. While the event system is novel, it is at best a small twist on the over-used questing system. Other games with repetitive combat overcome this with a well built loot system that GW2 is sorely lacking. They also offer faster paced PvE combat to compensate for the tedium. I look at games like Diablo and Borderlands as prime examples of how to do repetitive combat right.

GW2 is probably one of the largest content MMOs out there and far bigger than the ones you listed. I think you are remembering those games with rose colored glasses. Even if modernized those games would not stack up to GW2 in regards to content.

That said I’ve kindda had a break for the last 2 weeks and apparently so have a few other people. We all warned anet that if they didnt fix WvW we’ll just move to other games, and that is what is happening.

I don’t know… I’d agree with you that the actual player on player combat is a bit more involved here. But do you think the PvP system itself is more refined here? I felt like Shadowbane had more strategy involved in the system being used. You actually needed real scouts. You had to organize real defenses. There was actual loss at both the individual and guild level if you didn’t defend something etc. DAoC actually motivated their players to want to do well in the frontiers so you could unlock dungeons and NPCs etc.

In GW2, we kind of just WvW for no other reason than a lack of anything else to do. If you can follow my ramblings?

Similar issues to being in a guild imo. You’re in a guild for the fun and group atmosphere. But other than that, you’re in a guild just because…

To be fair, it doesn’t generate $$ because they never offer ANYTHING that is of value in WvW in the gem store. They took away town clothes and toys. If they would offer things for us in the gem store, I guarantee you, we would buy it. They have no clue what they could make off of us, because they have never tried.

Game-play

Game-play

Game-play

If the game is not fun or otherwise enjoyable, then why play the game?

For me (and my brother), the game is not currently fun to play. The game-play seems incredibly repetitive, stale, very blob-festy, and the PvP overall is incredibly unbalanced. I’m currently taking a break until the game becomes fun again. EX: when SoR finds a more relatively balanced match-up, the general content becomes less blob-festy, and general game-play becomes fresh, more relatively complex and balanced, and more randomness is introduced in PvP/PvE.

For example, at least one MOBA’s balance philosophy is to have each hero relatively balanced to each other. This makes the game-play feel balanced and enhances its fun and competitive value because the better player will most likely come out on top more often than worse players. And its extremely successful in terms of active population and profitability.

The criticism you levy against GW2 both in WvW and PvE is fair. My point is that content isn’t what keeps these games going but rather engaging combat and player advancement. So long as players are having fun leveling and improving their toons, players will keep putting quarters in so to speak.

GW2 misfired on PvE fights, implemented a horrible loot system (ascended gear takes a flight manual to figure out and is tied to crafting not fighting), the WvW arena is stale offering nothing more than the same flip XYZ for no reason mechanic and their is no larger gain for a server or guild to continually fight. They have tried to spice up the WvW arena but have implemented systems with no inherent reward (ruins) or more of the same (EotM). Players want great combat that is engaging with a near constant loot drop that upgrades their toons and their respective organizations.

A guild scoreboard would do wonders. Gear that degrades with use but with drops that are consistently replenishing said gear. Balanced matches against common foes allowing for rivalries and alliances. Reasons to spread the fighting out rather than group it up. These should be the focus not more of the same.
