What we have learned from the new matchups
I learned that my world (SoS) actually stands for ‘Save Our Souls’ \o/
hehe
I learned that no matter what happens in the universe NSP will always be outmanned. Unless it’s server reset night.
In all seriousness though, it’s true what the OP says. Anet remarked when instating this new system that they were curious about what would happen if servers of different ranks were matched up. What would happen if a rank 5 server was matched with a rank 9 server. Could the rank 9 server surprise everyone and win? The answer clearly is… No. The higher ranked servers win like crazy against lower ranked servers. The higher server gets bored fast and the lower servers feel grief. Whatever the solution is to a fair server match up, this isn’t it.
I think a few servers need to be combined, personally. To get the numbers up.
The answer is obvious, isn’t it? Drop the que threshold by half. People will get frustrated by long que times on high pop servers and transfer to servers with less of a que. This will also allow the low tier servers to compete more evenly against the higher tier servers, as it cuts the number of people per map.

Yea the que threshold needs to be reduced or used as a gate to help maintain a better level of balance. Long que times for overpopulated servers would help to promote transfers to less populated servers.
What have we learned from the new match ups? We learned that ppl will always have something to complain about! We asked for this, and we got it because the old system was too stagnant.

Umm what if I like my overpopulated server for more than wvw? How is making longer queue times fair to ppl who don’t just wvw?
That JQ, SoR and BG are miserable sods who are probably better off kept in their own corner, grumbling at each other and snarling at other tiers.

Onslaught [OnS]
That SOR has massive zergs and crazy coverage. They would be tolerable without the coverage or without the massive zergs, but with both they are simply on another level.
JQ had shared their love with DB btw. :p (although most of them still send grumble cake to each other).
On queue threshold, how about any one server can only have the same number of people on a map as the other 2 servers combined?
So if Server B & C have 100 each, server A can only have 200 maximum before queueing for this map?
This perhaps, helps balance well hopefully not locking too many people out in queues.
It would spread coverage around all 4 maps and at least servers B & C know that they can only ever be outnumbered 2 vs 1 and that if they join forces can equal the dominant servers numbers…
What i learned is some servers fight regardless of the score, some dont.
That people terrible at their job are not fired in some cases.
The most competitive matches occured between the #9, 10, and 11 ranked servers (shocking right?)
But you understand that the 9, 10 and 11 servers would have never faced each other under the old system, right? And the power gaps weren’t as clearly defined as you remember. The 7 server was repeatedly beating the crap out of 8-9, the 10 server was repeatedly beating the crap out of 11-12, and the 13 server was repeatedly beating the crap out of 14-15. There was always one too many servers at the top of the ranks, that had too much coverage for their tier and imbalance the tiers below it as a result.
The matchups were also deadlocked in many cases, leaving the servers matched together on the losing end to die because servers could not move up or down. The former 10 server is now 7, where it likely belonged for months. And while they are in a bad match this week, if the old tiers existed they never would have gotten there. Also there is likely no real 9 server that would have balanced that match. The 3rd server would be a permanent whipping boy.
Look at the 12-15-17 server match. AR and IoJ are matching fairly well with SBI, with AR holding PPT leads on multiple occasions. Knowing full well what AR is capable of, that 10k lead SBI owns is by no means a safe bet for victory.
From what I see, this system is cleaning the stagnation and spreading the points to where they should be quite rapidly… In short order the variation could be tightened up and we could see the most competitive matches we have seen in a long time.

This is a lot to do with coverage. I’m not fully aware of the AR population, but SBI is pretty much NA with very little Oceanic and European coverage. Even on the weekend, when I was logged in at 2pm EST, we will be 2nd or 3rd in points. We’re NA that leans heavily toward our main coverage being west coast primetime. I’ve logged on at 6pm EST after work to no commanders on our BL even though we were holding just garrison.
IoJ is giving us a lot of good fights but lack the experience so I do hope they’re learning during our match. AR has been outmanned in EB when I’m on, which leads me to think they have better off hour coverage and make up their points when we’re all sleeping/working.

Having faced AR 9 or 10 times in a row (can’t remember when they came up now) I can tell you that they have a medium and fairly even NA population that is slightly heavier in EST and have virtually no oceanic presence to speak of. We have one single oceanic guild which is actually a tag we formed a few weeks ago just to give quick communication and visibility to the few Oceanic players spread across our main guilds and we had the superior show of force with just that. Your battle likely boils down to who goes to bed last. But the point was that the gap between 15 and 12 isn’t as clear cut as 3 and 4, and the same falls down through most of the rest of the chain.
I have confidence BP at 14 would win vs SBI at 12, and stand a fighting chance against CD at 11 too.

I learned, that ppl dont know what they want. And the only thing how to ballance matches are free transfers to Vabbi.

Not true, people always wanna to win! But for this need someone to loose.
This is two different sides on one coin. And name of this coin is “Balance” but I don’t see arenanet to realise this

Just got home from the gym… Been thinking about what you said. I think SBI and EBay might be a really fun match. We also lean more heavily to CST & PST. I hope we match up together soon… Under the old system that was also a match that never could have happened because you and I could only really have ever swapped places at the edge of the two tiers.

Yes, EBay would be a matchup I hope we get soon. You’ll probably beat us but who knows. We’ve had a lot more people show up this week than the last few months so far since all the bandwagoners have been hopping on since we actually have a chance of winning (along with the PvEers needing 100% map getting those green EB/BL POIs finally too). Our zerg is certainly less coordinated with all the casuals this week.
Having been in a stale matchup for months straight, I welcome the random factor even if it means we get rolled by DB every few weeks.

More likely it will eventually promote transfers to other games whose designers are capable of figuring out how to set up fair matches. The clock is ticking …

either way the overpopulated server still ends up with fewer people, which is good for balance.

The rating points are now starting to redistribute down from the top tiers. For a glicko based system that is a good thing.
