I am curious to hear the opinions of other WvW players. Games like DAOC (the true RvR game) had 8v8. Will GW2 have 5v5, 10v10, or what? What will be the competitive WvW standard once the ranking system comes into play? What is the appropriate number of skilled players that can take out the “zerg” yet have organized, equal fights?

(This is all hoping they don’t implement the flawed “everyone gets the same points no matter how many people you are with” system)

Hopefully at some point they implement a leaderboard and a proper way to view player names when fighting. All great RvR, PvP, etc games all provide notoriety which is one department GW2 lacks. Thoughts?

Current GvG fights are 25v25 if I’m not mistaken.

Wow. 25v25 seems a bit excessive to me. Having to get 25 people together for a competitive fight seems a bit excessive considering the fact that there are caps on how many people can fight in a single map. How can people really set up those 25v25 on a consistent basis? I would think at most, 15v15 would be the competitive number, although 10v10 or 5v5 was more expected…

Interesting PoV though, thanks for sharing!

It usually seems to happen at the end of a matchup, and frowned upon if happening earlier. Guilds reach out to each other if interested, or set open challenges and then they get organising. If they do it at a time the rest of the server agrees with (if they’re on a server which does that a lot), you can see guilds leaving borders to allow for GvG, though we’ve had it on our server a GvG was canceled because there was a queue on our side, and people had problems getting in.

25 is a pretty good number – below culling, but enough to feel like an actual guild battle. 10 and lower would feel more like sPvP i imagine.

8v8 was the standard for GW1 and I thought it was excellent. Running 20 people in WvW is a good group size and even up to 30. Talking about GvG, however, it would have to be about 10 players give or take, but WvW needs more players to accomplish many objectives, although there are many things for 8-man groups to do. Having 5 as a standard is too few and you end up pigeonholed into bunker or dps as sPvP currently is. You need 8 man groups or more for actual variety and group composition.

There isn’t really a small man WvW group scene out there at the moment, for a variety of reasons. The players at scales of 5v5 – 10v10 tend to be in SPvP.

The major WvW guilds will run maybe 20-30 players on average. If you want to compare the fighting skills of the best WvW guilds, you’ve got to set up fights at scales they’re comfortable with, and the lowest common denominator seems to be around 25v25. Plenty of GvG fights at around this scale have already happened, organised between guilds.

Like it or not, there’s not many people running in WvW in small (5-10 man) groups. Most either solo, zerg or play in an organised large scale guild.
