Q:

Serious question, 3 way battles at SM have long been pretty unplayable. Utility skills rarely work, some have delays of 5+ seconds. Its just mash weapon skills and pray your side wins?

It has been this way for a very long time, why has this never been acknowledged? its an easy fix, upgrade servers so they can properly handle the game you made. wvwvw is very popular, its about time you start doing things to accommodate it.

I mainly play on EB but I’ve heard of Borderlands having similar problems, it’s bad enough the game can’t load multiple character models where I’ve seen suggestions it could be a server side problem.

the culling issue has gotten better over time, still there but better. I understand that has more technical limitations in regards to players rigs and they dont want to bombard them so they cant play.

But server lag that makes it so we cant even use our skills, is simply a issue that arena net can fix by just getting better servers. Im shocked people arent up in arms over it

Throwing more money at the problem, while the favored response of most governments, is rarely the best solution. The actual problem could be any number of things rangeing from software, hardware, or bandwidth limitations on either server or client side. Chances are the problem is much more complicated than a simple “Servers are lagy, upgrade them now!” can account for.

Yeah I don’t know why you would implement something when your servers can’t even handle it. Its actually quite sad that we are in the year 2013 and A-net can’t even handle 150 people fighting at the same time in the same place.

throwing money? we paid for a finished game, they are skimping on server costs (yes i know its F2P) which is why we have such bad lag in large SM fights. Servers can easily handle that many players at once these days…. this isnt a “new thing”

Edit: this sounded mean, i really like what arena net has done with GW2, but the lag issue is just astounds me

What Merendel.7128 is saying here is exactly correct. The problem is absolutely more complicated than just throwing more money at the servers, or Arenanet would have already done what is necessary to provide the quality game they have designed. It may include increasing the servers’ hardware quality or redundancy, but it most certainly will not solve the problem in and of itself. They would likely spend MUCH much more money than they need to to solve the problem in this fashion alone. I’m shocked that people are not more shocked at the quality of this game at this infantile stage. If you enjoy the game and you enjoy the development in features, be patient and the quality will follow.

I’ve personally never had any problems with lag more than a sparse few seconds a month maybe when everyone else is disconnecting all over the place. I’ve never had any problems graphically with the game in WvW, dunegons, or anywhere else. I’m a commander and I’m frequently rendering MANY many enemies and allies.

Look at the release: very few disconnects, some minor guys with skill points in maps, but overall very polished for an initial release compared nearly every other MMO, modern or legacy. We’ve had a lot of changes to the game: dungeon tokens becoming account bound, class rebalancing, TONS of bug fixes and description corrections, bot cleaning till it’s comparatively bare of them… fractal leveling structure was changed to be more inclusive, preview in the trading post is on it’s way too. They removed orbs of power to figure out if they were necessary in the first place while they tried to fix the glitching problems, they’ve stopped server transfers between battle groups and require gems now!

There are simply too many to list. They’ve done an amazing job until now. Let’s give them a pat on the back and a big thumbs up for the work they have done before we stone them, eh? I’d rather see them take their time and delay the solution a bit and make SURE this game survives and provides quality for years to come than rush, spend the money they probably need in an early stage of a micro transaction based MMO, and have it whither and die like nearly every other game has in the past 5 years.

In order to remove culling completely we have to address three issues:

1) Bandwidth out of our servers/datacenter (traffic would increase without culling)
2) Bandwidth in to each client (traffic to each client would also increase without culling)
3) Client performance issues related to rendering (potentially) all the players on a map at once. (Note that we base our performance requirements in this case on min-spec clients. We don’t want to stop anybody being able to play the game after all.)

Issue #1 was the easiest to deal with because we can basically just throw money at the problem. When we first started down the road toward removing culling from WvW I took a bunch of bandwidth measurements and then went to the executives and said, essentially, “Hey, if we disable culling our network traffic will increase by X%. Are we ok with that?”. The answer I got was a clear and unambiguous “yes!” So issue #1 isn’t a problem after all.

it’s fairly obvious that Anet hasn’t thrown money at it yet.

Issue #2 is a little harder. We need to ensure that folks with a min-spec network connection won’t be overwhelmed by the data we send them and we obviously can’t just buy a better connection for all of our players. So we put our heads together and came up with a plan to reduce the bandwidth required for WvW (and Gw2 in general) as much as possible. Those changes are in testing now and will be rolled out as soon as we’re convinced that they’re solid. Assuming we’re able to get everything working the way we’d like (and I’m fairly confident that we will) then this will address issue #2.

the game is playable on analogue modem and the box states that the minimun requirement is broadbrand. this is a false reason imho.

So that leaves us with issue #3: client performance. Some time ago the WvW team acquired an engine programmer who is focused 100% on this issue (and he is being assisted by another engine programmer who isn’t officially on the WvW team). They’re working on some really fantastic optimizations and engine modifications which we hope will allow even min-spec clients to render all the players on a WvW map. We’ll be talking in more detail about the specific changes they’re making when things get just a little more nailed down, but I can say right now that I’m very impressed with the work they’ve done already.

that’s why there are client side graphic options and the place holder graphics. i argue that there are not enough client side graphic options that allow the client to downgrade the graphics to make it playable on the low spec clients. again this is a false reason imho.

I gotten used to playing with 6fps, invisible frienemies and skill lag..
If they fix this i will be the best gw player that ever excisted!
