When to start?
depends on your class imo. i waited till 80 with my warrior but went in at lvl 5 with my ranger. range classes have it much easier then melee though obviously. just remember there’s karma gear in WvW you can buy for pretty cheap too if you need better gear.
About 5 minutes after you create your toon.
Definitely depends on your class, and how you play it. Even if you’re weak, you can do some good (and get a bunch of xp) by moving with a zerg, and using your skills to benefit who you’re with or what you’re doing. Especially staying at range will keep you alive more often through your lower levels.
at level 30, you’ll have most of your skills set up, and will have a few traits to help, so i’d say that is the perfect time to start.
I have an engineer and have been mostly playing WvW since lvl 15-20 somewhere. Your gear scales too, but is obviously not comparable to really Geared 80’s. But WvW is not about 1v1 or 5v5, but about relative group sizes, positioning, and siege weapons. So you can still be very much of use, as long as you know when to stand and when to run.
It also depends on what your secondary goals are; if you want to level fast, find a zerg and go capping points. If you want to help your world, you can be a scout (even a defensive one, stay and hang around at locations likely to be attacked to call for backup if it is so) or speed up yaks, or do upgrades. The latter don’t really net you much in experience or karma though, and the last costs you money, but they do help a lot for the rest (it is always good to know enemy location and numbers). And of course you can man siege equipment
It does get easier as you level up, even sub-80, because you simply have more skills and traits to get you into and out of trouble (in the case of my engineer, I switch most of my skills and some of my traits around depending on whether I’m running into a battle, going to defend a sieged tower or keep, running a long distance, or scouting around).
But IMHO map positioning, and even more, communication, is way more important than whether you can beat an individual opponent.
And yes, siege is very important. It doesn’t scale, so even a level one can do some wicked damage with a single siege object. Sometimes, it may be best to put weaker and lower-level characters on siege while the strongest stay on the field.
I’d recommend you start as soon as you are interested and start getting the strategy and lingo down ASAP.
Level does very little to matter, don’t let it be a deterrent, especially when you’re manning siege equipment.
Controlling an arrow cart or a ballista during an out-numbered siege and holding back the onslaught of forces = super fast leveling.
Joining a zerg and taking capture points = good speed leveling. Probably faster than anything you can do PvE except back to back running of your personal story.
Exploring the map and trying to kill people alone = challenging fun. It can be done but you’ll have to pick targets carefully and don’t expect to level fast or win every engagement. Some classes are definitely easier to kill than others so look out for them! You’d be surprised at what a level 30 can beat.
So, in terms of when to get into World versus World – level 1 works.
Thanks a lot for the feedback guys.
I do have to pick up on strategies and the lingo, I’ll search for some guide on the internet. I don’t wanna be screwing people’s life by doing something wrong with a siege weapon.
Thanks again!
i was afraid to ‘misuse’ siege initially as well, just learn from others, see where they place it, how they use it, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice. Sure you’ll get the occasional fool saying ‘u r doin it wrong’ but I have found that most people are very supporting and helpful.
